H&R springs on an S3

hey guys, am looking at getting some H&R's on my S3
but the few reports that there is some bounciness is a bit worrying, as would rather not have a bouncy ride when im pushing on, on country back roads
has anyone had any problems with theirs, or is there anyone around london that wouldnt mind me coming for a ride so i can see what they are like first hand?

Ive got H & R springs on the S3 ive just bought, and your correct they do give a very bouncy ride. Even on smooth tarmac with undulations, and as for cumbrian back roads they are very limiting and bouncy.
 
are h&r springs the same thickness as your standard springs. the reason i ask is i drive an a4 with eibach springs and the eibach springs are far thicker and the ride is perfect and my shocks have big miles on them. 122000.

tbh i have no idea, i was thinking about eibachs, but by the looks of it they only do front springs for the S3!
 
i had a look at the eibach site and thats what it looked like, also spoke to dpm and they only stock the fronts, gonna do a bit more hunting tho and see what i find

ive emailed my tuner to see what he says or can find out, and found another supplier that does the pro springs to see what they say, just hate having mixed info!
would normally have got the H&R's without a second thought, but dont want bouncy suspension, want something that is good and firm that will give me the confidence to slap the car through the fast corners with changing camber and over hump-backs etc
 
I dont mean to but in guys as I have not driven with the H&R springs, but just for general set up of suspension components
The spring supports the weight of the car and engine and is matched to keep the car level front to back and side to side.

It also has a given compression rate which is relative to materials used and spring thickness.

The compression and rebound of the springs is further controled by the shock absorber ( bump and rebound )
To have bouncy springs whilst driving you have a mismatch on the rebound side of the shock absorber ie too soft!

This could be old shocks or just a total miss match of the springs and shocks!
I would suggest that a better option would be to buy a matched set of springs and dampers or uprate the shocks on your car to match the springs you have now.

To check your shocks push down at the front of the bonnet and observe the bounce as the car moves back upwards there should be no bounce and the shock should move smoothly with just one motion.

If they are worn there will be a few bounce's of the bonnet and it will be quite fast as the spring return is not under control.

One realy bad point of driving your car in this condition is that your braking abiltity is reduced should you need to do an emergency stop!

If your unsure about the test just pop into any tyre place and they will check the shocks usualy for free, but you dont have to use there services.

If the shocks prove ok I would suggest the springs are just too soft and may not match the corner weights of the car, has the right set of springs realy been fitted? They have given spring rates in KG and should match the corner weights of the vehicle that they are fitted too! between models the springs will look the same but will have differant ratings for weight differance of car models.

nice 1 gaz. i have fitted eibach for a few customers and myself and they do seem to be a good spring. i know what your saying but there are some nasty springs out there and i dont mean h&r.
 
Yep I know there good springs and have great write ups on a lot of forums.

Just this could be a case of old or worn shock's not working right or possibly a missmatch of the model part numbers maybe?

Maybe worth posing the question of part numbers to the numerous guys on here that have a good H&R suspension package to check the right springs have been fitted?

so correct me if im wrong, but as long as your car isnt bouncy to start with and as far as i can tell mine is fine atm as long as the correct H&R's are fitted then there shouldnt be any issues?
 
Not quite mate,

That test will prove that the shock is working correctly ie it still has gas or air in its system so is doing its intended job. This still may be a miss match to the spring which is allowing the spring to return to its full extent without any control which will cause the bounce.

To control the bounce of the spring the shock works on the compression by slowing the spring when it is compressing itself (bump ) and then it also slows down the spring when it is pushing itself back up (rebound )

If your shocks are working ok there is some kind of miss match defo if the car is still bouncing. Thinking about your question just then there is a chance that the springs are too strong rather than too soft as I first wrote. but whichever it is certainly a miss match of the compnents.

like gaz said. i would start a thread asking the boys what setup they have and how it handles. then you can make your mind up as to whats what..

so its really gonna be a bit of pot luck to see if they work ok with the dampers that ive already got fitted

If you know what part number or spring rate you have in KG then the guys using similar set ups should be able to help you a bit further as they will have info on the shocks that are proving to be a good match to the springs.

It might be helpful for you to google " corner weighting " or look on some racing forums about what you can do with suspension, It is one of the best ways to increase your cars speed coming out of twisty corners, if you get it right it will transform your car massivly without having to gain any extra BHP.

No intention of dropping names but in the Porsche world there are a few companies that solely do car suspension set ups to gain the best from a standard engine package. these set ups can make a huge differance even between similar engine spec cars.
