I know the FWD ones will be more desirable for conversion purposes, but does it make my Quattro lump worthless?
As my Quattro Avant hasnt sold whole im debating breaking it but not sure if its worth it?

The AJL is identical to the AEB engine fitted to FWD A4's.

Got to be worth 4-600quid depending on condition?

Really? Is that a running package? Im guessing if so eBayers are dreaming. They go for anything between 600 and 2200 on there....

You are comparing an longitudinal engine to a transverse. Thats the problem.

The trans ones fit in any FWD transverse chassis where as the long style 1.8T engine needs to made to fit, manifolds purchased, clutch is no good, neither is box etc etc etc

Thats why i said above i presume the FWD ones fetch more due to conversion opportunities......

a4 quattro engine sits the same way as a fwd a4 engine(longitudinal), its the engines that are mounted transverse/ side on, as in engine on left, gearbox on right that fetch more money for conversions, golfs/a3s/tt/octavia etc

Again, thats why i asked if mine is worthless as its not a FWD one.....

its not worthless, just worth less. totally different.
for a fwd app. yes youd need different manifolds etc. but the reliabilty of these engines on long life servicing means its still worth 4-800 id say. if its in good order and had the oil changes it SHOULD have had!

the golf / A3 motor, whether fwd or not, is transverse and hence more use, the A4 / passat motors are all longitudonal, and less useable in other cars.....but it has nothing at all to do with fwd OR quattro its to do with mounting direction, front to back (A4/passat - longitudonal) or side to side (golf/A3 - transverse)

Yeah its FSH so a good one TBH

I didnt realise how exact id have to be LOL. When i said FWD i meant the golfs/a3s/transverse etc not the fwd a4/passat/longitudinal.

nae probs bud ;)

its still worth a good few quid anyway. In fact, someone else posted about their one going pop, look for the thread on the main b5 page, you may have a sale there.

makes no difference at all IMO.

if someone wants all the ancillaries AND the engine then yes a transverse engine is worth more, there are more of them out there for a start so more people want them.

strip it of all ancillaries and manifolds and it is EXACTLY the same engine. they dont make a transverse 1.8t and a longitudinal 1.8t.
they just bolt stuff to them after they put them together.
with the possible exception of the layout of the windage tray or something similar I cant see any possible difference between the actual engine.
still worth over £500 in good nick.
its the bits that go with it that take it over that price, manifolds, turbos etc

AFAIK transverse engines are all 06A blocks, the B5 motors are 058 blocks, so they arent completely identical. Mounts, anciliary brackets, etc are different and not interchangeable between the two.

B6 onwards got 06A blocks.

nope, age dependant as well as some applications.
Mk4 golf had 058 as well as 06A

I think what the OP is getting at, it's not a £1200 drop in conversion for a MK2 golf or similar as it has the wrong manifolds, mounts, turbo etc etc

So as such most people won't be ***** to strip it to a short block and then buy the required parts to make it fit etc.

Its still a £500 ish engine for someone with a blown 1.8T'd A4

then to be fair it is not the engine that makes the price difference, its all the extra bits which match an A3 platform.

yep, but when you need to find a transverse engine to get all the anciliaries/manifolds/brackets etc, there wouldnt be much point buying both an A4 engine, and an A3 one for the manifolds etc.

I was positive the Golfs and A3's all had internal waterpumps and crank driven oil pumps, which is a feature of the 06a block. Looking on ETKA, the earliest A3 listed (1997) has an 06A block. MK4 Golf (1998) also started out with an 06A. The only 1.8T's using the old 058 block are the motors fitted to longitudinal A4/A6's and Passats.

AEB, AJL and AGU fitted to Passat, Bora, A6, A4, A3 and Golf between 02/95 and 04.01

AGU is 06A and was fitted to transverse applications only.

AEB and AJL were 058 and only fitted in longitudinal applications.
