Oil change

Because my car is modified I change it every year, basically I have an annual service regardless of mileage - at the end of the day I suppose the oil is your blood and needs to be looked after. Also, I have heard that sludge or something similar can form on the 1.8T's which can be troublesome so having it flushed more often than not should always help.

I had the dreaded sludge problem soon after I purchased the car, luckily tho I had it done straight away. I may get my oil changed every 6000 miles to be on the safe side

Twice a year for mine

I think of it like this 2x oil filter's and 2x tin's of oil over a 12 month's is alot cheaper than an engine rebuild..

on my tdi i drop the oil and filters then filler it up and drive it for 4 weeks then drop it again and redo it all once a year as i only do a max of 5k have been told not to use engine flush on them as it can harm them and doing it the way i do it cleans it out fully there is a few guys on here that do it this way

I aim for 5-6k for a petrol motor. I'd want to be doing it more frequently on a derv though. I like my oil to be golden and translucent, not manky and black.

Would say that either 6k or 1 year is probably a fair interval, as if you've not done 6k inside a year your probably doing lots of short journeys which isnt that great for the oil etc.

Simply saying 1 year doesnt really work, because you could have done any mileage in that time. Few years back i was doing over 20k a year, and i certainly wouldnt be leaving the oil in there that long.

I change mine every 10K which works out every 5 months:faint:

Always use Castrol Edge

do the people who use castrol edge 5w30 find it made your engines feel more free revving. It is thinner oil than the w40 that comes from audi so should do in theory

the audi oil is made by castrol for audi mate id go with the audi one every time unles you can get the castrol on sale

every 10000 miles or about every 6 months, its a 1.9 TDI. use castrol edge 5w/30. which at the moment is on special offer at opie oils.

Same for me but i use audi long life. Filter, Nut and Oil is £28 for the dealer.

The audi SLX oil is exactly the same as the castrol edge on sale at halfords, no different, they've just seperated the branding & audi retain SLX & retail is now Edge.

TBH it depends on the driving I've done, but prob 10k full change out.

When my car went in for the temp sensor, Portsmouth Audi topped up my oil(charged of course) and gave me what was left in the bottle(well i did pay for it). They seem to be using Mobil 1, now ive always used Castrol in all my cars, and i am using Castrol Edge at the moment, do different dealers use different oil, or should they all be using the same.

OK, I would have thought it was obvious from my further words in my post it as in reference to the SLX product, but I've edited it to further quanitify my post!

Hi just readying this what is the best oil to use if I'm going to be changing every 5000 miles, Is it quantum platinum 5 40w or quantum longlfe III 5 30w. Also going to using the lager oil filter as well. Cheers Nozdog

I think that depends on what your car spec details as the viscosity, difference would be detrimental for some engines mate, check your book for the VW spec rating, then check the 2 oils quoted would be my 1st step, this should then advise best for your engine.

Every 5k seems a tad OTT no?

Hi my engine is a bex 190 1.8T, it only covered 54000 from new and was on AVS long service but I'm going to get it serviced once a year or every 10,000 miles which ever comes first.

TBH mate I dont have a 1.8T anymore, cant recall which weight it was, I know I used SLX always, it should be detailed in your handbook fella, have a looksy or even more just check halfords even if just to look in the book they have of all cars which would show the oil needed, sorry I cant be of more help, but I'm sure someone with same engine will chirp in anytime. :)

Bex 1.8T 190 uses 5w 30 oil, i change mine every 5000 miles now because of the sludge problem i had when i first bought the car, and it'll save your turbo!!!
