Car due for a service soon, have has been filling her 5w-30 on long lifes.
I have reading that some on her have been using 5w-40.
Whats the advantage of using the 5w-40?.
Comming off the longlife after reading the horror stories about burnt oil, blocked pick up pipes etc.

Any comments helpful,

Cheers

Dont know what the advantage is, if any, but i use Castrol Edge 5w30. National Tyres do an Oil and Filter change for just over £30, check thier web site out.

5w40 doesn't go as thin when warm and is better suited to higher mileage cars... I use 5w40 in mine and drop it every 6 months or 5/6k mileage

I'm planning to change to 5w40, but couldn't find any at VW 504. What stuff you using Tuffty?

Give GSF Chelt a call mate, they used to supply 4ltrs but have started doing 5ltrs more recently or Bill has 10w40 fully synth by the bucket load....

Thanks for your replys,

I think I will give the 5w-40 a go, Comming upto the 100,000 mile mark now and if like tuffy says it being slightly thicker suits higher mileage cars then it can maybe only be good thing for engine wear. Only when I phoned around people were recomending 5w-30, It seems most s3 owners are using it (5w-40). Now need to decide which oil brand to go with. I take it use fully synthetic?. Oil is so much harder than deciding what beer i'm going to have on a hot sunny day Lol.

Cheers lads.

the mileage make no difference. you make it sound like once you get over 100k itll leak like a seive.

i cant see anything wrong with quantum platinum, meets all the right spec for the engine before "longlife" came out

i use Motul 300V 5-40, its abit expencive but its probably the best out there..:beerchug:

I went in last week as I have used Fuchs from GSF and still had a part one left , only to be told they have stopped stocking it :(

Yeh, I was in GSF in Chelt a few months back now and they were stocking a cheaper looking brand, said it was the same quality ete but i decided against it.

The problem I find with that is - what oil filter will they use ? I always tend to buy original filters - anything else is just mickey mouse (i think).
