Hello all,

I recently bought an aftermarket headunit which has been wired up correctly with all the relevant adaptors to my '97 A3 non-Bose, however, the driver's side foot well speaker isn't working at all.

The passenger side works fine and the rear and subwoofer work aswell, even the driver's side mini speaker(next to the door handler) is working fine its just the footwell speaker.

So I thought the speaker must have blown and bought a replacement Audi A3 speaker and still exactly the same problem when I fitted the new speaker. Any ideas on what the problem might be? Any suggestions on potential fixes?

I would check your conections on the back of the head unit.

I have and it all seems to be fine, I've tried another headunit which I had spare and even that has the same problem.

I can't think what else it could be?

Right well, this is a peach of a problem!

What to do is get an AA battery and connect it over the (+) and (-) terminals of the ISO connector (with the head unit removed of course) you should hear a large crack from both the door speakers, if you only get the tweeter (next to the handle) then there is something wrong further on. In fact it'll be in the door.

The Haynes shows the wiring to the door as red and & brown/red going through connector T10r on the door on pins 1 & 5. If you can hear the tweeter working then the signal is reaching the door through this connector. Inside the door it connects to the midrange (door pocket) speaker first as red/white & brown/white and then onto the tweeter. You need to concentrate on the midrange connections- is there a crossover??

If the tweeter works then the wiring and connection to the HU is fine as both tweeter and mid driver run off the same wiring. The wiring goes to the mid then a piggyback runs from the mid via an inline capacitor to the tweeter (to high pass the signal). The problem has to be the speaker (measure it via a multimeter on the ohms setting, should be 4 ohms or do the battery trick detailed above). It's not impossible that the replacement is also blown if an ebay jobbie. Did the speaker work before with the original HU?

could be broken wires, mine were fecked on both doors (02 B6)

As said can't be the wiring if the tweeter works, they run off the same cable!

I have the same problem with my drivers door speaker, tweeters fine.

It sounds like its blown untill you turn it up load. I removed the door panel off took it in the house and connected the wires to my stereo system in the house and the mid range and tweeter both worked fine. So maybe it is some wiring at the back of the face just not got the right keys to take it off yet and have a look.
