170 TDI rough idle, smoke etc help needed !

The only thing I've done is to run the car on Shell Vpower with a shot of Millers additive (overkill maybe !) The result is no smoke when warming up - at all ! I've still got the rough idle but that'll do me for the moment

    Diesel fumes in cab

Yes I've got that as well with my avant 170, there's a thread further down the list. Could possibly be cam timing out by a few degrees as suggested by various people. Have you got access to vcds ? Is so, post up your torsion value from group 4 measuring blocks, it should be 0 deg +/- 1deg...

170 TDI rough idle, smoke etc help needed !

I'm sure it's not that easy ! I don't mind messing around with my car but I'm not sure about someone else's !

170 TDI rough idle, smoke etc help needed !

Yes I reckon I'm capable of adjusting it, but how much to turn the inlet cam once the locknuts are slackened and in which direction? Do you adjust the exhaust cam as well? Any help appreciated!

170 TDI rough idle, smoke etc help needed !

Thanks Steve Its seems to be a pretty common issue, I'm hoping someone will come along with a fix for their problems I think the first thing to address is the torsion value, anyone got some advice on adjusting this ?

170 TDI rough idle, smoke etc help needed !

My car is a 2008 BRD 170 TDI, 130k miles. I've got the usual rough running and smoke whilst warming up that seems to crop up. The egr and manifold have been cleaned in the last 2000 miles and injectors were replaced in July 2013 When the car starts and warmed up its fine, its the bit in between...

    egr delete process

I wouldn't believe what that article says really, diesels don't have a throttle butterfly like petrol engines, they always run with an excess of air and don't create much manifold vacuum at all (if any!). The throttle controls the amount of diesel fuel injected only. The egr valve introduces...

Changed Gearbox Oil Now Crunch Into 2nd !

Yes I used the Triple QX oil, I'd had great sucess with the slick 50 in mk2 Golf GTI's 'back in the day', I guess I've learnt the hard way that it's no good in 'our' 'boxes ! Hopefully changing it over won't have caused any issues

Changed Gearbox Oil Now Crunch Into 2nd !

I hope not although I suspect it might ! I'll drop the oil and find out I guess, will post the results

Changed Gearbox Oil Now Crunch Into 2nd !

Hmm, I wondered that as well after I'd put it in. I'll drop it back out next weekend and get the Fuchs oil in

That sounds promising ! What's special about that stuff, I thought the correct grade was 75w90 ? Thanks

Changed Gearbox Oil Now Crunch Into 2nd !

Changed the gearbox oil today on my 170 TDI fwd after 130k miles, maintenance really but hopefully to cure a notchy 1st-2nd gear change. I used 75 w90 fully synthetic box oil from eurocarparts with slick 50 additive which I've had good results on other cars. Went for a drive and the change up...

    Forum Newbie, Advice For Buying..

Personally I like my 170 tdi avant, 32-34mpg cold runs around the doors and around 44-46 mpg on a run at motorway speeds (brim to brim calculations). Tank mileage varies from 500 to around 700 so it's not as bad as people make out. My injectors were new last July and the egr and inlet manifoild...

    Balance Shaft?

As above, wouldn't think it's oil pump related with those symptoms. Turbo failure, egr valve, etc ?
