I wonder if one of the motoring journals eg auto express or Autocar might be interested in this as a story? Anyone have any contacts there?

I did it last May - truly awesome, especially the West Coast section. Was told to avoid summer as can be lots of midgies.

Simple basic economics suggests they can’t do that without lowering demand - up to them whether they want to do that - vote with your feet if you don’t like it

In that case you’re the living proof that winter tyres and snow chains are not needed and a waste of money. I wonder why the police don’t allow cars without winter tyres or snow chains to drive up alpine passes when it’s snowing?

You can drive as carefully as you want but if you have to drive up a steep snow covered hill covered in snow you won’t get to the top. I’ve driven in the alps when it’s been so slippy that wheels spin even with snow chains on.

Well I don’t know where you live but I can recall some winters with a foot of snow in the roads in southern England in the past decade or so

Do you not think the fact that a pound currently buys 1.12 Euros whereas in the past it was generally in range 1.2 to 1.45 has anything to do with it?

If it’s very cold (it is January) then the grip from summer tyres will be much worse than at temperatures in the other 3 seasons
