Better throttle response, and the valve gets clogged up with black soot and gunge over time. Engine runs better with clean air going into it, rather than recirculated exhaust gases.

Very good advice. I've just changed my bulbs to xenons. Unless the headlight is pushed firmly all the way in at the bottom, the headlights end up, like mine, pointing at the tops of the trees!! So, had to slacken the torx 30 bolts again, and re-adjust. Also - changed the sidelights to 8 LEDS...

I wouldn't put cardboard in front of the rad for the reasons mentioned by scott b5. FWIW, diesels take longer to warm up than petrols, and if you are getting warm air out of the vents within a couple of miles of start up, I wouldn't worry - it's doing it's job. Although I have the 2.5tdi, mine...
