Currently getting around 500 to a tank in my 2.5 quattro 180 manual, Tbh i really dont notice a difference in fuel consumption over my last 1.9. Probably because i dont have to drive it as hard to reach the same given speed.

Don't the 3.0 v6 have issues with carbon buildup on the intake valves? i'm sure there's lenty of threads on this and the sluggishness was caused due to that. It's a do-able job to clean them without stripping the heads off, you only need to remove the intake manifold on the top.

If these valves were at fault wouldn't the car be fine once it had been running for 5 min or so?? surely once the engine was running it would refill with oil and all would be ok?, Maybe im missing something, The tapping seems to be worse at cold but once the engine is nice and warm say 20 min...

Where are the oil retention valves on this engine? i was not aware there was any?. I thought it only had the usual hydraulic lifters with rocker arms/pads ??

My a4 2.5 quattro 180 did this and it was the dual mass flywheel, only on idle and smoothed out once reved. could not notice it when driving or in gear.

hmmm sounds to me like you are getting a very small ammount of air entering the fuel system, thats why over time it is taking a while for the fuel to pick back up.
