Just to let everybody know, I got this problem fixed.
My battery control unit ECU (4F0915181) had become faulty due to a leaky bottle of antifreeze in my boot. I have had this replaced and my car has gone through a few long distance drives with no problems whatsoever.

Forget to add that power steering also cuts out, that's actually the second most common fault and occurs immediately after the central locking goes haywire.
