Audi Oil Consumption Problem Discussions

"Consumption of 0.5 litres per 620 miles... is widely acknowledged as normal"

  1. silentbrown
    Audi say:-

    2. What is an acceptable level of oil consumption?

Consumption of up to 0.5 litres per 1000km (approx. 620 miles) is specified as acceptable by Audi and is widely acknowledged as normal across the industry

This surprised the heck out of me. I would never consider that normal, so I wondered what BMW thought...

    From here : http://www.bmw.com.cn/cn/en/owners/warranties/warranty_others.html

For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000 km. Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km.

So, amazingly, allowed BMW oil consumption is up to three times higher! (However, I ran an E28 M5 for about 100,000 miles, and it hardly used any oil. It did eat a timing chain and a lot of valves, though)

I'm curious what limits other manufacturers have...??

My last car before the Audi was a Beemer - 320d SE.
I did 100000 miles in 3 yrs and that rarely used half a litre in between 20k servicings. Only thing that went wrong was the stability control which ended in the car being written off in the wet. That's another story... :whistle2:

Had an 04 2.5 tdi quattro sport that never used any oil between services. Now have an 11 plate 2.0 tfsi and do around 50-60 miles per day, check oil every couple of days with no issues so far, cant complain

What month mate? Mine was unfortunately one of the last May 2011 models that require(d) fixing! Audi said it was fixed from mid 2011.. If earlier it's a ticking problem that will definitely require a rebuild unfortunately!

    You could be ok then..
As Audi said it affects cars up to mid 2011.
I wonder if there is a way of checking via engine codes etc..?

Would you believe oil level has dropped slightly since last check two days ago? Will monitor

I had an old c20xe powered corsa track car, which used an obsene amount of oil. Didn't burn a drop of it though, it simply poured out of every gasket possible.

Went like a rocket. As in very very fast in a very straight line. Not so good at going round corners though

I had a new 2.2 Z4 in 2004 which happily chugged through 1l of oil every 1000 miles or so - The dealership just shrugged and said it was normal :/

Several beemers and Audis since it was only the 2.0 TFSI in my A5 that came anywhere near that and needed a rebuild .....
