Help needed!..3.2Q DSG Hesitant engine ~ 2k rpm

Has anyone with a full manual 3.2 had this problem solved or only people with DSG? There was a reply earlier in this thread from someone with a full manual who couldn't get the hesitant update because the dealer told him the ECU was too old.

I'm currently looking to buy a 3.2 and probably would prefer a full on manual, but if the hesitant problem can't be solved on full manuals, It would be off putting...

Evil, that was me.

Mine has been sorted by I had to have the ECU changed and the the update added to that. You could do with finding the ECU part number before a purchase......

Do you know what ECU part number I should avoid? If i did get a car which needed the ECU changed then updated, is it an expensive job for Audi to do it all?

AFN...You need to read from page 13 of this thread.

Paddy's earlier comment should answer your question - those 4 numbers listed relate to the ECU part no. If you get a dealer to scan the car with vagcom at the engine module it will give you the information you require. If the number at 'Part No SW' matches one of the 4 listed above then the ECU is suitable for the update.

My car is back at audi trying to fix the six cyl misfire...meanwhile i have a 1.8T A4 avant exec...hmmm, dont think i would spend £27k on one of these...lol
Typical turbo...first half of the throttle dosnt do anything at all...

Hope they get it sorted Paddy!

Thats the issue here they will not even acknowledge it! My local dealer wouldn't take any information from me and fobbed me off. Then told me to go the another dealer offering the update and let them take your money!!!! They don't even want to know. I would try and get a registration of a car that has had the update and they can then see what was done. Audi UK have full access to all the work done so that should help them out.

I am not having mine done till next Friday so my reg will be no use to you. Maybe someone else can help. Cheers

Does anybody have a registration they would be willing to lend me so that I can give this to my local dealer and see if they can copy the work that was done on their car?!

Ryan

You can have mine (PM sent) but I don't think it will help you as all the invoice says is "software update".

My car has been at Audi's for a week now !! and while they admit there is a problem...they cant trace the cause...I hate to think what this is going to cost this time !!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to p.m. You paddy to see how you got on today!

Do they still think ecu?????

Noooo way!! crumbs can it be so many things for them to choose from???? Come on little V6, dont let us down!!!

Hi Jonathan..They are reluctant to say ECU because they are going to look silly if shell out for one and it makes no difference but i am sure that's what they want me to do..

the worst of it is they have a BMW garage one side and a Merc the other..one has a nice 335D coupé and the other a 350SL ..its all so tempting :)

It would be the 335d coupe for me......

I'm sure yours is fixable tho! It's just finding it hey!

Today they say they will swop the ECU for one from another car and try it....but i know they dont have a 3.2 A3 so it must be an A4 or A5....which seems odd because they said if i had a new ECU they would have to order it from Germany because it would have to be specially programmed for my car.

Yes mine had to come from Germany and I was told they were on back order. I'm not sure if it was the Volcano that slowed its shipping though...

Now they think its over advancing but it could be cam chain or ECU :( Cant see it myself because A/ its only done 44k miles and B/ its quiet...fact is its now 10 days and they just dont know.....and its £150 an hour :crying:

Not very reassuring Paddy is it when supposedly trained technicians are guessing what could be wrong @ £150 an hour. I sincerely hope you do get to the bottom of it though and there is plenty of goodwill involved from Audi!
It seems that when they don't know what the problem is, they blame the timing chain. I had to have mine done as it was noisy (48k miles) and they blamed the hesitation on that, as we now know it had nothing to do with it.
Am I right in thinking you only have problems now at cold start up, after that it's perfect?

Yes Ju, it starts fine but after 3 minute it misfires for exactly 1 minute and then is fine for the rest of the day...Trouble is they only get that 1 minute a day to diagnose it...

That's an odd one isn't it and obviously difficult to diagnose in short bursts! I take it does that now EVERY time from cold?
What's there attitude towards it, are they genuinely trying to help (I know that sounds remote) or they secretly hoping you'll get fed up and take it elsewhere?
Have they swapped out the ECU yet?

Dont really know Ju. I will find out more tomorrow as i am going in to see them....I will let you all know :)

Well guys after all the problems.... I had no choice but to get the chains done.... i so missed the dsg !!! Car feels far better and smother drive also some of the Hesitation has seem to of gone... But i don't think it has cured the problem....
the only thing now that it is showing up 16725 ??? The sensor should of been changed on a previous occasions Any suggestions guys ???

They have now taken the top of the engine off and had a look at the chains. No wear to chains or sprockets !!. They have ruled out ECU as well. Now changing the advance /****** units and solinoids on the cams. they say the engine is badly carbonised and there is 1mm of crud on internal surfaces. could be fouling up the adv/ret mechanism...
I have told them to stop once the bill reaches £10,000.....:(

Hmmmmm I know alot of people on the vw scene and maybe others run a litre of ATF in rhe engine then dump it to clean rhe engine out....

The guy reckons there is 1mm of carbonisation over the internals in the cam box..Its never done track days and always had its service interval oil changes etc.......and only 44k miles !!.
Sorry but i have always had doubts about long life oil and changes and now i have big doubts about castrol as well !! the audi tech said they used to use mobil 1 but audi fell out with Mobil..

I have just had the update put on by Portsmouth Audi, £115 later it seems to have sorted it! Craig Ancell (master tech) was very helpful.
Car is now smooth at constant revs around 2000, and pulls away more smoothly too. Now I am hoping it will start using less fuel!

Was hoping to pay less, but I will now be writing to Audi UK about goodwill. The guy on the front desk thought it unlikely they'd offer anything as it would be classed as a 'software enhancement' - eh? So NOT having a lumpy running car at 2k-rpm would seem to be an enhancement according to them...!

Thankyou to everyone on here who has written about this, I would have had no idea what the problem was!

Hi Guys, After everyone's help I got the update done today and Tonbridge Audi. The car is now running so smoothly and no more issues. Its even better to drive. I paid £68 for the update and its worth every penny. I did try and get it done under the warranty but no luck there.

Just pleased that its all sorted. No issues at 2k rpm, pulls away better and got 2mpg more on the way home!

Thanks once again to everyone.

Your both welcome, now enjoy the 3.2 as it's meant to be!
I saw mine stripped down Paddy right at the beggining and tbh it was clean as whistle inside, been on longlife services too.

Sorry to hear about the bother you're having Paddy, seemed like there was light at the end of the tunnel then this.... 10k is big bucks! Has there been any mention or gesture of good will seeing as their 'technicians' are taking so long to pinpoint the cause?

Sincerely hope you get it sorted soon m8, been in the same position where people just arent able to diagnose the problem and it makes you sick...

Imran, did you have the chains replaced to resolve the hesitancy issue alone? also, are there any physical symptoms relating to the error code you're getting? Seeing as you've just had the chains done take it back and let them know something isnt right...

£10K was a joke as its the value of the car :) that said...i hate to think what the total is now....just not £10k !! I hope

I had a chain issue and had no choice but too have them done ... but i must say it has made a massive differnce to the hesitancy.. but from this thread i no it still needs doing ..
It does not seem any physical symptoms problems too the car relating too the code
Yeh it looks like gona be visting the garage once again lol

Yeah Paddy, I'd gathered it was sarcasm to an extent regarding the 10k sum but still, with AUDI technicians on the case it wont take long to rack that sum up... I was gearing towards the notion they may acknowledge theres a problem and from there on, because they cant diagnose it immediately, they would bear some of the investigative cost (at least)... wishful thinking? :)

Hope its sorted soon m8, or at least diagnosed :)

Hmmmmm I know alot of people on the vw scene and maybe others run a litre of ATF in rhe engine then dump it to clean rhe engine out....

I did suggest that to the audi tech and he said that it would not be a good idea to loosen this stuff and have it floating round the system again, might just be back to square one.

Quick update, the service advisor at Guildford Audi who was looking into this for me just got back to me and has informed me that after following my query with product technical they are unable to find the update / TPL number that was supplied, they would however be willing to book my car in and investiagte the problem but would not be able to carry out the update :)

Looks like another dead end! May well have to call it a day on this one

Hey Ryan, get in the car and drive down the M25 to Tonbridge Audi. £68 and 45 mins later you will have a car that feels like new and the drive is so much better. This is a must. Don't give up. Its not far to go. I drove some 45 miles from home to get there and the service was excellent. They even washed my car. Give them a ring they know all about it. Cheers

Thanks for the info, who is your contact at Tonbridge Audi who knows about this update? May give them a call and see what they have to say.
I know an hours drive is not far, it's just annoying when it should be a simple job for ANY Audi dealership.
