My S3 6 speed is a little knotchy moving into second gear. As I was having some work done I asked them to change the gearbox oil in the hope it would improve the gear change.

Not much happened to the gear change but the mechanic suggested using molyslip.

Is this a good practice? Does it work? Is it easy enough to do? Is it safe for this type of gearbox?

Cheers for any help :sm4:

How many miles have you done in your S3? It could be a tired dogbone mount, upgrade it to a poly mount for £20 + labour to fit, and the gearchange will feel more positive.

58k on mine. The dogbone mount sounds promising.

Does the poly one add vibration noise though? (just going from memory on something I read ages ago - I could be mistaken though)

Doesn't add noise, and there's slight vibration through the steering wheel at idle when new, but it goes away once the poly bush beds in, it's something I don't even notice whilst driving anyways.

Thanks. I will have a look at a poly mount for this. Any recommended sellers?

Loads of places sell it, try DPM Performance, for a Powerflex Dogbone mount, should be around £20, and if you are handly with a spanner, 1hr max to fit with the car on axle stands.

Great stuff, thanks :)

I used to add molyslip to my old Golf GTI (MKII) gearbox as a precaution, them 020 gearboxes had a 'self destruct mode' that activated whenever it felt like it, it would sheer the diff rivets which had nowhere to go but to blow a big hole in the box, spewing gear oil everywhere including over the clutch. I don't know if molslip would stop the 'self destruct mode' or help in anyway to limit the chances but it did make gear changes more slicker and I noticed less gearbox noise too.

As for the DB mount, I opted for the THS mount as I didn't fancy having any vibrations in the cabin, age makes you intolerant of such things! Link here if you want to know more: http://www.thsperformance.co.uk/product/FR3_Gearbox_Steady_THSFR3-DBO

I had the same thing happen to me in my MkII Golf GTi 16v many moons ago! I was on the Helston to Falmouth road in Cornwall when CRACK! went the gearbox dumping oil everywhere. Not good times when you are on the bones of your ****! I had to sell some audio kit to pay for the replacement box :(

Thanks for the link. Does it do the same as the one above and improve gear change?

It did improve the gear change but the improvement wasn't dramatic, then again, my old DB mount didn't look or feel too worn when we removed it. I just figure that after 100K miles it wasn't likely to be in great condition and decided to change as a precaution.

One thing i have notice is that in my A3, I get less 'wheel hop' when it loses traction in 1st / 2nd gear, the wheels just spin more instead of them 'hopping'. S3's / 4WD don't have the same problems as the Haldex will shift the power (or it should do) to the back wheels.

HTH,

I reckon its worth a change so I will order one and get it fitted.

Quick update - I had the dogbone mount changed to a THS one plus had the wishbone bushes change to Powerflex as the originals were worn.

Gear change is still the same. It is still clunky into second on most changes.

So that is the dogbone change and gearbox oil changed with no result. Is there anything that could be adjusted or any other ideas at all to make the change smoother?

sure its not the linkage that needs to be adjusted?

basically, bushes wear within the linkages, over time they may need adjusting. ie you shift the gear lever over to the left but due to wear in the bushes the shift mechanism isnt actually being moved as far as it should... hence it gets notchy.

Ahh Ok - I will get this checked out - cheers!

Could it perhaps be the gearbox its self? I.e. worn teeth on 2nd etc? 2nd+3rd are the most stressed gears on a car are they not?

Is it easy to replace the bushes? Also were can you get them from?
