3.2 vs s3

Would have been cheaper buying a good mk5 r32 engine and swapping! They go for about £1500

Trouble is they have had it 2 weeks now and just 2 "DAYS" labour is nearly £2.5k alone !!...Its a real problem with the modern car, it takes very little as in my case for labour charges alone to make repairs un viable. a £5 component can cost £000's..

And to top it off, you know if its in bits in their garage, they will charge to put back together even if they find nothing or you want to go to an Indi! Cant win! Hopefully Audi UK and Jeremy will look kindly on you!

No way! feel for you Paddy! Yours is like a puzzle gone wrong at the mo! :sos:

lol...S :)...be warned..its just an Audi thats gone wrong !

Anyway...I cant sell it fast enough Once its fixed so what do we want next ? spent the last 2 week in an Brand new A4 and you have to keep the window open just to stay awake its that exciting... I really wish i liked the S3..it should be the natural progression because i really like the A3 but that lack of tractability and the tendancy of the DSG to change into 6th at 1000rpm would drive me up the wall i think..

the standard S3 is pretty ordinary. I was tempted to sell it on the first day of ownership. I had no real plans of modding this car but ended up chasing a state of tune that would provide me with some satisfaction for the £32k spent.

All this time I knew damn well I should have bought an E46 BMW M3CS (know that's not going to be flavour of choice on here), but personally I just don't find the S3 / A3 a great car. RS4 was way out of reach at the time, and was the only other car I'd have considered.

Must admit I like the RS4 avant!

it's brilliant, and a league ahead of the S3, but the running costs are pretty steep as you face so many wear and tear costs unless you can afford a fully comprehensive warranty pack. The sound alone is enough to give a man a semi!

ooohhh! that good eh! Thats why id love to go down the F1 pits!!!!

Do we have any fugures weight wise? I'm not so sure the s3 engine setup will be much lighter..... Turbo setup and all associates gubbins...

A3 3.2 Q 1,535kg
S3 1,455kg
TTRS 1,450kg

I'll hazard a guess that all that weight is in the engine and front suspension of the 3.2 and trus me that amount of weight makes a huge difference....

It's a pity Paddy but like you say it could happen with a Vectra, they are all so complex these days...

How about an S4 or S5 Paddy.

80kgs is like having a 14 stone passenger on board all the time.

As soon as I put a passenger in our car I feel the performance drop off.

Can you really tell if you have a passenger (i.e. roughly 90kg) in the car handling wise with your day to day driving?

not such much handling wise, but absolutely power performance wise, the sharpness of acceleration blunts noticeably.

Ok I thought we were talking handling wise.....

Maybe Warren should let us lowly 3.2 drivers have a go of his S3 :yum:

If you were local you'd be welcome, but it's a hell of a drive for you - on the upside, what you don't try you wont miss!

Sarah I don't think you would be that in awe of a standard S3. Yes they are slighly faster/nimble but have some slight lag.

I'm wanting to change cars soonish and not sure what to go with as the S3 isn't in my eyes worth the swap, slightly better but not enough. An RS4 or S6 Avant are the ones I have in mind but not sure I want the big bills!

Oh I know I wouldnt be keen on the standard S3 but the stage 2s etc do make me curious! No, im still happy with mine and crumbs if you move on, there wont be many of us 3.2s left lol! As said before the RS4 is stunning and in Sprint Blue, well..... doesnt get much better!

I knew damn well I should have bought an E46 BMW M3CS .

I was VERY tempted by the vanilla E46M3 after driving a mates so can see your point, the E46 M3 is a brilliant drive, steering, sound, .. excellent.

BUT at the time, and for the same money as a nearly new decent spec S3, I would have got an average spec M3 with little or no warranty. And the styling was looking a bit dated and the E92 had been kicking around for a while, and the cabin was pretty dated.
And they are very expensive to run, fuel, servicing cost are high and I wouldnt even want to think about being exposed to the risk of repair costs pretty much from the start of ownership.
But then the M3 is a super saloon, 4 seats and supercar power so it is a tier abover uber hatch backs in the performnace car pecking order. Therefore is cost more like for like, age for age, and so it should.

So, an S3 it was, and turning back the clock, I would have made the same choice again.

Bizzarely Ive bee watching EVO Xs on PH.......:sos:

Cheers
Paul

I'm putting a 3.2 into my Mk2 Golf so I might still need help!!!

Not sure of how long I'm going to keep mine atm. as after the software update it's given it a new lease of life!

I'd agree with respect to the standard S3, but a member of the R32 owners club drove my car the other week and he just kept repeating the 'F' word every time he prodded the pedal. He couldn't believe that kind of power was possible from a 2.0T, and whilst he hated the over servoed steering (which I agree with), he said it ranked amongst one of the quickest cars he'd been in and would pi$$ on his mates S5. Some of that will be the surge of boost rather than 'actual' speed, but stage 2+ is a very different animal to an OEM S3. I know it sounds like I'm blowing smoke up my cars ****, but I am the first to say where I feel the S3 is a let down - I'm a fierce critic of its weak points.

I'm always happy to demonstrate stg2+ to club members, as an example of the scope thats on offer above and beyond the standard car for reasonable money.

Yeah I haven't driven a tuned one so couldn't comment but I would imagine they are alot of fun.

For me I'm not sure I want to modfiy a modern car i.e. would prefere to buy something fast as standard but without a doubt I can deffo see why people do!

yup must be great, hence my curiosity! But saying that after all my blown turbos etc it put me off mappin cars so thats why I went for the 3.2 In time I may get over it lol but depends where we end up living lol

I can understand why, I'd like a cheeky Evo for weekend fun but I didn't get a job in politics or banking to fund it!

I've been looking for that for 5 years and only the Evo 400, the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Nissan GTR and then loony choons cars (Lambo's / Ferrari's) seem immune from the need for further tuning. Most other stuff is 'value engineered' and choked by Euro regs as standard (or just plain limp)

Sarah, there are a good few folk up your neck of the woods with Stg2+ S3's, you should ask someone to go shotgun, could see you in a sprint blue one - you know it makes sense!!

Exactly the way i am thinking...

I think anyone whose been in a st2 or st2+ S3 would quickly stop banging on about a slow car with a nice purring noise :p !! lol.

you crease me up !! I bet you have never even driven a 3.2 or you wouldnt be thinking slow. and coming from someone with an old 2ltr estate thing as well ...lol

Based on 12k miles a year:

RS4 running costs (ballpark): £13,725 per annum (assuming monthly finance payment of £650 per month, insurance at £580 per year, 4 new tyres per year, one service, tax at £425 and fuel at £1.30 per litre and NO FAILED PARTS!)

For the S3, same scenario £9,073 (assumes monthly finance payment of £385 per month), insurance at £420, 4 new tyres per year, one service, tax at £235, and fuel at £1.30 per litre, and NO FAILED PARTS!)

Nearly £5k a year more based on 12k miles a year for a 37 year old man with 8 years NCB, car garaged living in a West Berkshire postcode.

Lolzz. its fun winding each other up. But on a serious note, mines making about 250-260 bhp, and its about 90kg lighter then a THREE door 3.2, so im pretty sure it would be faster, if not massively. Can say that with confidence as I can beat a mk5 R32 no probs.

But if I could have 911 3.8 S/ E92 M3 performance, for much less money, (ie S3 with a cupl grand on it), I knew what I'd go for.

LMAO we agree again Paddy.

He must be a far better driver than me as i,ve had mine 3 yrs now and I have been unable to use full power for too long as you just get behind someone on our busy roads and I live near some good roads!

How long have edition and Paddy been going out? You guys announced a date yet :p
Well as for using full power, you should have been out our Glasgow meet......those who went to the Crail drag strip instead that day must have been disappointed, with only being to go flat out for 1/4 mile ;-)
