Few different clunks, squeaks and wobbles :sadlike:

When i pull away from standstill now, even gently, there is a clunk from the front right of the car

Going along at a steady speed, the car seems to wobble from side to side

When accelerating, there are squeaks, wobbles and clunks :crying:

Anyone know what could be wrong?

Well Im not getting coilovers anymore now lol, wish I could help mate but Im clueless! This is the kinda s**t that scares me and makes me abit paranoid about modding! Hope you get it sorted dude!!

It's probably the people that fitted them rather than the coilovers emself mate, plenty of people have fitted coilovers to their A3's without any problems

Why let 1 set back scare you for life? :scared2:

sounds like something isnt tightened right as the little bit of movement would give you a clunk and the wobble

Mmm, gonna have a look myself after work and then take it back to the garage tomorrow morning

I thought they might not have put the driveshaft back in properly, but if it wasn't in properly then the car wouldn't drive would it

I scare easy where money is involved mate haha! Make sure to let us know whats wrong though just to set my mind at ease :-D

Have you had your tracking/camber looked at after fitting the coillies smudge?

I know when I fitted new springs and dampers, I got them checked and they had gone way out. ( but I didnt check them before fitting so it may be possible they were wrong to start with!)

Probably not the cause but may be worth a look for the £30 or so it costs

Ye i need to get that done also, but i don't think it's anything to do with that

Will probably get it done tomorrow morning

After a weekend of fiddling, i've narrowed it down to the driveshaft

I'm able to turn the drivers wheel without it turning the driveshaft.....so that's clearly not in properly

If the driveshaft is damaged, my mates garage will be getting a hefty bill from Audi

sounds like you found the problem then. Glad to hear it.

I would be paying a visit to garage in the morning !

In all fairness, I've had my coilovers on my car for 2 years and covered 24k on them, and I haven't had ONE SINGLE PROBLEM WHATSOEVER!!

I know I know mate, Im just been a little bitch! If owts gonna go wrong chances are it'll happen to me lol. I'm thinkin just a lil drop on springs anyway for the time being, see how that goes!

Sorry to hear of your woes mate, nothing worse than forking out, then ending up with more problems than you started with.

I can understand (to a point) why if people want to deck their car they use coilovers to get 'the effect', but when I think of the hassle they can bring about in terms of corrosion (non stainless bodied units), set up, adjustment issues, ride quality (particularly on UK shabby roads), the coilover argument starts to evaporate for me for anyone who is not having them serviced (cleaned and checked), corner weighted (actually one of the reasons coilies were invented rather than to look 'scene'), and then used for a HEALTHY amount of track time each year. Even race teams get the set up of coilovers wrong, so the average garage is pretty much pi$$ing in the wind when it comes to optimized tuning of all of the alignment parameters. As the car sits lower, all the parameters change, and I bet there are scores of cars running sub-optimal set ups across the UK which may in some cases risk braking distances and overall safety.

Coilovers by the nature of what they are make them lower and harder than standard spring damper set ups, and cut price models from the Far East have meant that reliability and quality has nose dived in recent years as they drop below £700 (value engineering rather than economies of scale). I personally would rather just spend the money on balls out springs / dampers than on coilovers as I'm after a ride quality rather than 'the look'.

There is an enormous thread on SCN about the pros and cons of coilovers here (LINK) which has started some interesting debate. At the end of the day it's peoples money and their choice, but I often wonder whether it is an informed choice led by qualitative research, or just a passion to be 'scene' as la VW latest 'down and out' fashion. Whatever you do, make sure you spend decent money having this kind of kit set up properly for your own safety as well as the safety of others.

Right, took it back to the ******* that fitted the coilovers the other day, with the promise that they would have a look and try to sort it out

Got there, they looked at the car for about 20mins, they said to me that there was nothing they could do as they didn't know what was wrong

A lot of screaming and shouting later, i told em to **** emselves and arranged for a recovery truck to take me to my local mechanic to have a look at

Rest assured that they will be getting the bill for whatever work/parts are needed to resurrect the problem

Jeez, really sorry to hear it mate; nothing worse than shelling out to be told they can't help you.

Fingers crossed it can be diagnosed. How are you going to ensure they pick up the tab if you've bent their ear?

Right, after speaking to garage B and inspecting the drive shaft, its clear that the offside driveshaft was installed improperly, causing damage to it during the fitment of the coilovers, and obviously as soon as i drove away from the garage

Few pics to show what damage was caused:

Supposed to be 1 of those large bearing on each of the 3 "prongs" if you wanna call em that

As you can see, only 1 is still in place

Damage caused to the actual bearings:

Should be completely smooth all the way roung

My brother had a very similar problem last weekend actually, after he fitted new springs to his Celica, turned out he hadn't tightened the wheel bolts up properly!!

This is a bit different to that, they must have just shoved the DS back in, thought it would be fine and send me on my way

Small claims court will be my new best friend over the next few weeks

i like this haha nice one dont let them get away ! iv had too many cases where my friends have been forked over by garages and said ah itl be ok simply cos their scared to do soemthing about it and its me that drags them back i love a good argument !
iv just fitted my new coilovers too no problems so far except the handling could be a little tighter so looking for some ARB's to finish the job !

let us knowm how it goes ! good luck

Bah, Get em teld mate! Id av gone bananas, keep us posted matey!

Letter is going off to them today, stating what happened, and what i want to happen (money back)

They won't do it obviously, so i'll take it to small claims court which shouldn't take too long as i have picture evidence, written evidence from garage B and a **** load of dedication to shaft it to em

I wonder if i can try and claim for having to hire a private jet to and from work
