I had my head gasket changed recently and its due an oil change only. Audi quoted £100, Kwik Fit - £49, so decided to do it myself as it cant be that hard is not so important to have this one on history.

As I cant seem to search the forum for previous posts (disabled). I was wondering if anyone has a link or can give me a run down of what I need to do. Is the Oil Filter recommended to be changed? What oil should I use, make and type?

must change oil filter aswell and i recommend a new sump nut as it comes with a built on washer (about £1.10 at audi) and use 5w-30 PD OIL ONLY ! . As long as its pd oil you should be ok,you can buy it from vw £15.50 + vat standard pd oil or £49 for longlife

Cheers vw754. How many ltrs is needed to do a complete change? May be worth getting someone to do it for £50 if it inc all the bits and wonder what oil they would use and inc a filter?
 
3.8-4.0 with filter,..........the questio is......will they use the right oil,or the oil u give them or there own?...........do it ursel or wait and watch ! i dont trust alot of em........down to bad experience.....what area you live in?

Hi mate

oil change is pretty easy, a set off axle stands is highly reccomended though, if i remember rightly there are 8 screws holding on the cover underneath at the front of the car take it off and you should be able to see the sump bolt take it out and drain the oil on mine the washer was metal so shouldnt need replacing. Put the bolt back in fit the cover and put the new oil in. If u need to find out which oil is best any halfords or motorworld should have a guide for the best oil to put in.

Easy as that? I thought diesels were somehow different. Wheres the oil filter located? does this need to be changed when all the oil is out? :icon_thumright:
 
When the head gasket was done they should have changed the oil too, you sure you need the oil change?

Oil filter is at front of engine, change it from top, not underneath. it's a black round container with a 32 (or 36mm can't remeber) socket needed to undo.

Head gasket was replaced and new oil was used but after 300-400 miles after it needs changing again im told.
 
Im guessing a Oil Change is needed to be done after a replaced Gasket? Is it recommended or risk free?
 
I use a Pela 6000 pump to remove engine oil then just refill with new oil and filter when finished. It`s a very quick,clean,cheap and simple way to change engine oil. http://www.pelaproducts.com/
 
@ karbonk: Changing oil and filter is quite easy.
First, you need to be able to get under the car, so you need some stands or something to lift the front of the car a bit.
Remove the plastic cover, and find the bleeding bolt. Remove the filling cap on top of the engine ang go back under the car, with a recipient (5 liters capacity) and remove the bleeding screw letting the oil poor into the recipient. You may also remove the dip stick.
When the oil is drained, you should remove the old oil filter and put the new one . This is the most difficult part because there is not much room around. I recommend you to grease the gasket of the new filter using some of the new oil.
Put back the bolt in the bleeding hole, put back the dip stick, put back the cover under the engine and loer the car. Poor some 3.5 liters of oil (this is if you don't know exactly how much oil is required). Check the oil level then on the dip stick an poor some more until you reach the maximum level.

Start the engine 2-3 minutes so the oil can fill the filter too then let the engine off for about 10 minutes. Check again the level on the dip stick an poor some more if needed. you should not put more oil than needed. start with the 3.5 liters. Its ok to start with.

Wheres the best place to buy the Oil Filter, Oil and plug?
 
I get mine from my local "motor factors" - "Partco". If you look up motor factors in the yellow pages, its where the trade buys their servicing stuff and you can usually walk in and buy from their trade counter and trade pricing.

You want to make sure the oil is marked "VW 507.00" compliant. That's the 5w-30 fully synthetic oil that meets the "long life" specification.
Don't buy any other cans with any other spec on it - even other VW specs as they aren't necessarily the long life specs.....

I picked up a 4.5 litre can for about £18 last time... The guy behind the counter says "that's dear stuff that - are you really sure you want that one?"....
I smiled and handed over £25 for a gallon of VW spec oil and a filter.....

Hi sorry to bring back an old thread. I'm looking to change my oil on my bkd engine 2.0tdi a3 but don't know where the sump plug is located. Iv attached a picture of what I may think it is. Is it this?

It so difficult to unbolt. Even with wd40 I wasn't able to. I'm thinking of just using the suction machine instead
 
Are you doing it with the car warm or cold? It's normally easier when there's hot oil in there. However this carries its own risk of burning you when you remove it!

Last oil change I did at a mates house and had driven 20miles to get there so it was nice and hot under the car. Let it stand 10 min and then did it and it didn't burn me. So just be careful and you'll be fine.
 
That was my belief too, as it means you get more of it out of all the oilways etc as it's nice and runny, and not a cold sludgey consistency lol
 
How much oil is needed in the tank to max it out for a 2.0 TDI?
 
3.8-4l with filter. I'd start with 3l and work from there checking on the dipstick.
 
Cheers again smithy. I warmed the car for ten mins. My mates has changed the oil on the past before from the sump but looks like he has proper 'welded' it back on! So what i have done is ordered a suction kit that should arrive next week and just do it from the top. I read about that 3.8 is the max but Il do what u say and start from 3 as it makes sense
 
Ha yeah I know what you mean.

The suction idea is a good one, you don't even need to lift the car up to do an oil change that way.
 
What suction kit did you buy? is using a suction kit just as good as doing it the usual way?

It should be good enough. You probably will just have to rummage the tube around the tank when it gets empty unlike the sunk hole where most just drains all out straight away but it prevents u from all the hassle of going under the car and getting all dirty
