that the quattro are crap in the snow

friend rang me up to say he needed to be at a works do,and that the taxi wasnt able to pick him up, so i said yeah no probs, only that his works do is in yarm, and to get there i have to go down a really steep incline for a good 1/2 mile go over a little bridge and up the other side which is just as steep and just as long, then back the other way once i dropped him off, seen a range rover slide back, a L200 pick up slide back down, audi quattro piece of cake

very impressed to say the least, did not think it would make it, but it did, twice, and we have just had 5 inchs of snow in the space of an hour

never owned a Quattro but the AWD car i have previously owned was the danglies in the snow! i miss AWD! lol

The quattro would have slid back as well if it had 1+ tonne on top of what it weighs allready... You cannot bend the laws of phisics. The land rover would have gone much better on deeper snow where the quattro cannot go though... Still a good performer all round the Torsen quattro from VAG group.

We've had the A4 stuck about three times in as many days.

Had to stop at a hump back bridge on thursday as there was oncoming traffic, approach to the bridge is about 1/4 mile of incline, was fine with the momentum until we had to stop. Tried to pull away and just couldnt get any traction to pull it up the hill. C*nts were driving round us to get over the bridge, I ended up getting out and pushing the ****** car while dawn was feathering the clutch.

On friday morning we couldnt even get out of craigs street! I had to shovel a tonne of grit all over the road before the car had enough traction to get out onto the main road.

Craig didnt have any problems in the quattro though, not even a chirp of wheelspin.

Half the time the drivers are the problem. People are far too harsh on the controls, giving it bootfulls of throttle when the wheels start slipping instead of backing off and trying to regain some traction. Also ****** me off when they're jammed right up your bootlid instead of leaving plenty room.

Well i have had my A6 out the past couple of days, not in heavy snow but couple of inches and also on ice, had been using a td auto laguna as i was not paying for the fuel and once snow hit well thats the end of that and jumped in the Audi..

Now i do like 4wd cars, my sierra 24v was, have a legacy tt 4wd and now have the Audi... was very impressed with it, got places others didnt. Do agree tho its the way you drive them, open car park snow and a heavy right foot!!!!

thankfully the s4 is tucked up in bed in a mates underfloor heated shed think this is toyota hilux weather! very gratefull of the luxury of having both! 2wd, 4wd, road tyres, offroad tyres, 2 inches 6 inches, think people need ta ask 'do they really need to get there?' as wisely pointed out above physics is physics, snow can be great fun but unfortunatly a massive cause of accidents

The Range rover probably had street tyres on some 22 wheels. my dad has a new shape range rover and that with the all terrains it has on it will go pretty much anywhere. I know because I drove it though italy and switzerland up and down snow covered roads and it was very sure footed where other cars had to chain up. That said tho my Quattro is just as good! I don't like to risk it though as I don't trust other drivers so I take my discovery offroad toy... so if i do get stuck, I have my winch and if someone decides to bounce off it its just anouther dent. I agree with you about the physics they are big heavy cars but aslong as you know the limits and don't drive like a tosser thinking your invincible you'll be fine!

How is it that other countries in the world that have snow all winter still manage to go about their business but as soon as we get a bit of snow everything goes to pot everything shuts down and everyone panics! I think its quite embarrassing

We had a Land Rover Defender TDI (long wheel base) on a job a couple of contracts ago in Wales. It was brand new with all the XC gear. The thing was RUBBISH (absolutely no offence to ANY bods on here with one, it's just mine and the other 12 lads opinion...). Hill wise it was ok, but the thing fell apart. 2 Gearboxes in as many months, a driveshaft, a diff, steering rack, oil pump.....Think you get the idea. We paid £23,000 for a fully loaded piece of sh*t!! Ended up trading it for a new Hilux. Was very happy with that.

Was it a TDI? or one of the newer TDCi engined models?

The TDCi does seem to have a lot of issues, more so the earlier ones around '07, not really sure why, you'd think after 25 years they'd have building them down to a fine art.

I have a disco offroader, but its currently in bits, the dash and heater matrix removed and no front seats. I think i'm going to attack it today and see if i can get it reassembled, just incase the missus needs it for work tomorrow!

i agree, it is the way you drive, there was a car fwd and he was giving it big, loads of wheel spin, and he was coming back down at me, now i had all ready made a move slowly going up, now hes coming down backwards, sliding all over, i stopped,which i know is a big mistake, and i started going backwards, slowly engaged first,took up the drive overtook him and away i went up the hill,just over tick over, i think i was the only one to make it to,loads of people were parking up at the pubs car park at the bottom and walking home i think,

as i said i was very impressed to say the least,as for the rangerover it was a new shape one, watched him go up a bit and slide down into the kerb and got stuck up against the kerb and crash barrier, im not saying the rangerover couldnt make it, but obviously the driver didnt have the talent to drive it propperly

ye, when we were stuck at the entrance to craigs street, a guy in a honda people carrier decided he'd drive round us, which worked until he got to the same place we'd got stuck (we'd reversed back by this point).

He then sat giving it big licks on the throttle and wasnt going anywhere. He then told the missus to get out (as though that extra 50kgs was going to make all the difference) and tried even harder on the go pedal. Some passer by went to the guys window and told him to back off the revs and use 2nd gear and the clutch, and me and another boy ended up pushing him out.

I also noticed we got stuck a fwe times where others didnt, moreso in the snow than the ice, and i recon its down to the tread pattern on the eagles. The V tread doesnt have any edges to "bite" into the snow, so its like driving on slicks.

i have eagles to but just on the rears cant wait to get them off, getting the wheels refurbed after chrimbo and picked up 4 new hancock v12s up yesterday. i think people think the harder you put your foot down the better it will be when all they are doing is compacting the snow and turning it to ice, by spinning the wheels,

am buying some winter tyres asap.

went out in my wife Mk5 Gti. have to say it was awesome in the snow. 1:3 incline and it just cruised down.
passed a 5 series BMW that couldn't move. very funny.

as for getting stuck when some **** makes you stop in the snow is to slip into second gear and pull away. rarely slips.

'if someone decides to bounce off it its just another dent' thats great! i'm obviously not the only carbon footprint challened audi driver we an old 4x4 too! my pickups been through the wars too! even then i was making safe an steady progress home the other day an some **** in a navara came screeming past me!
i was rather smug when i towed him out of a ditch with some minor but expensive front end damage!
think we all agree, its not what you got its how you use it!

My S4 was spot on in the snow/ice today, i loaded up my trailor with two trials bikes and a mate and we went off up some small tracks up a hill. Came across a guy in a golf who said we cant go up the road its to ice and no one has made it, so when he pulled over i just drove past him and off up the hill i went (2nd gear constant speed). Had a good days ridding on the hill then drove back down in 1st gear letting the engine do the braking for me and home safe.
Also in feb my car went every were in 3"+ of snow, up and down hills were no one else would go.

just been out in my 2.8 quattro on very snowy slushy icy roads no problems going forwards or backwards but theres not much to be gained in towns and cities as all the 2 wheel drive cars are going very slow in front of you also just remember quattros have 4 patches of rubber on the road like any other car and braking is no different so dont be lulled into a false sence of security

Had my B6 1.8TQ out on the first day of snow and loved it and with the ESP on it made a big difference from the B5 I had.

The B5 was great in the snow but the ESP does the trick and will take control of the loud pedal if you try to spin the wheels. I also loved watched many a BMW struggle to get up the smallest hill with their rear wheel drive although the FWD cars seamed to fair much better in the snow.

Braking is just the same as everyone else and no real gains here to be had in the snow but like always Quattro worked a dream with no spinning at all other when I switched of the ESP.

my 2.8q has been fine in the snow, did 135miles on friday and have used it as normal everyday since, no worries on lanes etc. very impressed with it.
