hi i have a 2000 s3 ,i,ve owned for 2 years now.6 months ago i noticed 2 rust spots both on the rear quarters about 6 inches from the sill in front the arch.i took this to my local audi in brentford london,after inspection the tectnician told me that both the areas were stone chips and corosion had started from the outside.i believe every case would be the same ,they would avoid blame!!!!!!

As you can imagine I am abit cheesed off as Audi said it is a paint issue, not corrosion. Does paint bubble on its own, there are no stone chips any where near the bubbles so why has the paint bubbled? Is this not due to corrosion under the paint? Northampton Audi were really good and even the guy there said he was supprised that they have refused it? Is the Corrosion Warranty worth anything? Any help or advice from you guys would be appreciated.

GOOD NEWS - Had phonecall yesterday from Plymouth Audi, and they said that Audi will cover the roof rail corrosion, and are going to ring me Monday to book the car in. Took them almost 8 weeks to get the OK, but I'm just happy I don't have to argue the toss with them.

My car went in on Monday to be repaired after Audi agreed to cover the full cost. The work is being carried out at Tonbridge Coachworks.
I was pleasantly surprised by the courtesy car they have given me. A5 Cabrio 2.0T S Line - very nice indeed!

Just booked my car in to Cardiff Audi for inspection. Bodyshop manager was aware of the issues with corrosion near the roof rails, & seemed quite helpful. Said he needed to measure paint depth & take photo's of the affected area.
Dropped the S3 off to Audi Plymouth's approved body repairers (Rodgeman & Williams) on Wednesday and was expecting it back today with the roof corrossion all sorted as agreed under the warrantee by Audi. Rang them this morning to find out what time it would be ready, only to be told that they had started the job, and then stopped mid way as they had found the corrosion more extensive than envisaged, and that they now needed Audi's approval to proceed further. I then rang Plymouth Audi to find out what was going on and was promissed a call back, guess what - Im still waiting. Suffice to say I'm not a happy bunny at all, having agreed that the roof corrosion was covered under warrantee, I fail to see how the repairers need further authority from Audi mid way through a job just because it turns out to be bigger than origionally envisaged, corrosion is often like an iceburg, bigger under the surface.
It's Audis responsibility under the warrantee to repair the corrosion, big or small they have accepted liability in my book and it should be fixed. So here I am stuck with my S3 in bits and driving the most horrid courtesy car in the world : a 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa. Has anyone else had a similar experience, and if so what was the outcome?

I picked my car up on Friday from Crawley Audi. The car was wet and a bit dirty so couldn't really inspect the work very thoroughly but noticed a few issues straight away. One of the roof rails looks bent, and there are a few bits of primer visible upon opening the boot. I also noticed a couple of scratches that weren't there before and a few bits of overspray and imperfections. Not impressed at all. Going to have to book it back in.
It really frustrates me when these people are clearly not doing their jobs properly. If Tunbridge Coach Works and/or Audi had inspected the work thoroughly these items would surely have been spotted. If I made mistakes like this in my job I'd get sacked, it's as simple as that.

As I noted two weeks ago my S3 was in at Tonbridge Coachworks at the same time (via Tonbridge Audi part of the same chain as Crawley). My car was ready on Friday 27 November so they called your car in too early.

UPDATE - Went in to the approved Audi body repairers today to find out the latest, it seems Audi have OK'd them to continue the repair, they want to remove the windscreen and side windows in order to spray the entire roof, A & C Pillars. I asked the bod if it would result in a complete fix without the possibilty of the corrosion returning, his reply was "WELL HOPPEFULLY" saying they treat all the corrosion with various potions as per Audi's repair instructions and then repaint etc, ao I'll be checking it regularly in the next two years while its still within the 12 year warranty period and hoping that its sorted permantly. Hope to get the car back on Thursday (8 days since it went in!) and will post update then.

Just had my approval through after seeing this thread, checking for and finding rust on the roof rails, and then taking it in to the Bristol Paint Shop (although I set this up via Bath Audi) 2 weeks ago for pictures and paint thickness measurements.
Chap at Bristol was helpful, although stated paint thickness showed respray evidence (surprisingly only area with original thickness paint was wing repaired after someone hit it when parked!) so was fearing the worst. However, I just had the call to confirm it would be done "as a goodwill gesture". I'd probably argue this classification given it's a warranty issue, but hey I'm just happy it will be sorted.

Ok, I took my car into Cardiff Audi & the bodyshop manager measured paint thickness around the n/s roof rail at 169. He said there's no way Audi UK would approve a repair as it had been repainted, & wasn't worth submitting a report.

gives me some hope, i was going to get the guy to test mine at teeside audi last week but said i would have an hour wait, said i will come back, ill get down when i have some time, update with results
Just had my S3 back from Plymouth Audi's approved repairers after 8 days, roof corrosion now dealt with, they have removed all the windows, sprayed the entire roof, A and C Pillars. I had a good look at it when collecting and it looks a cracking job, no flaws that I could spot anyways, 2 years left to run on the 12 year anti corrosion warrantee so hopefullly it wont reappear. Certainly impresssed with the work done, and especially so as Audi footed the bill.

Hi..New to this forum, as we own a New Beetle, not an Audi. I discovered this forum/thread as a result of a corrosion problem in the gutters of New Beetles and felt that I should a) point you to a discussion on a New Beetle forum and b) update you on recent events with our claim/repair.

Next, to update you, I have had a VW approved repair completed on our Beetle approx 10 weeks ago. Recently (within the last couple of weeks) the bubbling has re-appeared! According to the local VW bodyshop manager, the original fault lies in a faulty weld in the roof and that the only long term solution is a new roof. VW suggested that the use of a chemical and then repaint was sufficient.
Now that the problem has re occurred, VW warranty, against the advice of the bodyshop, are saying that they will not authorise the new roof and that the dealer is to repair the fault again using the chemical solution.
Again, according to the bodyshop manager, this is a known design fault with a number of vw and audi vehicles and that there are Technical Service Bulletins relating to this issue.
I am awaiting a call from vw head office tomorrow, during which they will be made aware of my feelings and intentions.

Even though it's a 12 year warranty? They should pay 100% really, still better than having it refused!
Will be taking mine in soon to be inspected - fingers crossed.
Audi should definately be paying 100% of the cost, mines a 1999 S3 and have just had my roof corrosion done under the 12 year warrantee and Audi paid 100% without quibbling, surely if they are acccepting the claim how can they suddenly impose a deduction due to age when the warrantee terms do not make such a deduction. Whilst 90% is better than having it thrown out, it seems wrong to me for them to be doing this, has anyone else had this?
Took mine to Preston Audi on the docks. I had rust under neath the paint on the roof sills going from the front of the car to the back. The rust was underneath and not yet through to the exterior but it was very noticeable. I sent them an email which was very polite but stated that if the rust is coming from under neath the paint that the galvanised panel work was defective. The reply i got back waS:

Under no fault of the own when i got it back my lower sill under neath the door had had the paint removed and was very patchy.
I was impressed rang them to complain. Again i had to book an appointment and go down. He took pictures of the damage from the body shop or jet wash???? within a week it was booked in again and the damage was sorted out. Car is perfect all rust has gone and i get another 3 years corrosion warranty on the work they did.
So all in all my experience was very good and pleasing. I even got a courtesy car which was a new 1.9TDi. The only thing it cost me was my time.

VW Customer Care are telling me that VW Technical Dept is speaking to VW Warranty Dept ref my claim. Lookers VW have put us in a Golf GT TDi until the situation is resolved.
New bodyshop manager at the stealers is confirming that the fault is well known to VAG and lies within the seam as a result of the manufacturing process, that no amount of rust treatment/repainting will permanently solve the issue and that the only guaranteed solution is a new roof! He is also stating that a previous, non-VAG repair is irrelevent to this problem and that it is wrong of VW to use this as a reason to invalidate the warranty for this issue. (I've got an audio recording of this conversation as a memento ) VW have already offered to treat and paint our roof again, but we are pressing for the correct solution.
My advice for anyone with rusty gutters, is to hang on for a few days whilst I try to get somewhere with this and then I'll hopefully be in a position to provide evidence, including VW TSB's, to help with your claims.

Update from my earlier posts on this thread. Car being booked back in to Crawley Audi/Tonbridge Coachworks on 13th Jan after the extremely poor quality of the repair at the 1st attempt. Here is a list of items I was not happy with:
1) Bent Roof rail - N/S - this was not bent before
2) White Primer visible when opening boot and masking edge - O/S
3) Bump/Imperfection on rear of N/S roof rail
4) Chips near rear of N/S roof rail
5) Sanding scratch marks on all edges of all panels that join rear quarter panels both sides - door edge, rear bumper edge, small panel under rear lights edge, edge of corners inside boot
6) Lots and scratches in and around roof rail channel - I thought this was repainted?
7) A number of scratches on the roof that were not there before
8) Scratch/scuff on boot - top edge left of number plate - this was not there before
9) Imperfection on O/S rear quarter above petrol flap - near rear windscreen. White fleck.
10) Boot top/spoiler above rear windscreen - sanding scratches on left and right edges
11) Bottom of windscreen pillars - scuffs/scratches on edge
12) Rear arch N/S rough, masked edge on arch lip...
13) Rear arch O/S marks on arch edge (no shine) buffing/polishing marks?
14) Scuffs/scratches above rear O/S rear window
15) Over-spray top right rear windscreen
16) Paint/primer on front windscreen seal - both sides
17) Overspray on top corners of rear bumpers
In addition I was very surprised that the whole roof had not been repainted as part of the repair. I was advised that this would need to happen on the initial claim when Audi only offered to cover 70% of the cost. Audi then agree to cover 100% of the cost and the whole roof is not repainted - coincidence?
I suggest that you all closely inspect the work after your respective repairs are carried out. I fear that the fact Audi have agreed to cover the full cost may result in corners being cut and the standard of finish/quality of the repairs dropping. Hopefully I'm wrong.

When I had mine done by Plymouth Audi's approved repairers Rodgeman & Williams in Plymouth they removed all windows and windscreen and repainted the "A" and "C" pillars as well as the whole roof. They had the car for 8 days in total and it now looks superb. I would certainly not accept any job that had flaws such as bhafc78 above seems to have, and I'm sure Audi would be unimpressed with their repairers work as well.

I got corrosion on a '99 A3 1.8T Sport. Wolverhampton Audi do not want to know. They say there is only a 10yr Warranty. Boll*cks!!

After having some trouble a few months back, Aug/Sept time with my local dealer,
ie not having a specialist, not having a paint depth gauge, going to another local dealer,
the guy on holiday, going to my local, still no machine, local guy telling me he'll call, and come to me, didnt happen,
etc.. along with several phone calls over a couple of months i gave up.
Couple weeks ago, emailed the audi HO guy, got a call from their customer service,
took details, tried sorting things out, popped into my not so local dealer the other day,
i phoned cust serv to let them know, next morning im phoned to say its been 100% approved,
and its going in a week today now. for my roof rails to be replaced/roof repainted etc..
have to see how it turns out .
but getting there

Hello ladies and gents.
I am a newbie here, but not new to forums, posting etc. so hoping this is OK with your mods (right section etc).
I am a new owner of an 8l S3 and happen to have a pretty long time known guy based at Audi HQ who works on claims. I will be talking to him in due course about the paint and corrosion warranty as I have bubbling of the paint on my boot handle/number plate bulb holder. Having had a father with numerous Audis before this, our relationship with Audi has been very good over the years so should not come up against too much hassle. Once I have chatted to this guy in London, I will let you all know his thoughts, ideas and suggested ways of handling/making claims. When a local Audi refused to pay for an obvious paint defect from factory on my father's R8, he handled it and sorted everything to the greatest degree!

I would like to hear your outcome HD09. I recently had my roof rails approved, but the corrosion on the rear refused at the same time! I would like to have this done as it looks bad, but Audi quoted £275.
