New rear lights for 3 door A3 Sport (2003)

All of the threads that I have found seem to be about fitting new lights for the 'sportback' (which as I understand it just means 5 door?) apart from this one: http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=80911 - however I'm not sure if my A3 is the same as the creator of that thread because mine is probably a bit older. Its 53 reg, so its still the newer shape but obviously its not the new new shape (if that makes sense...) so I'm just wondering which lights I can actually look at getting. I love the look of the brand new ones but I'm guessing they wont fit mine, so if anyone could just shed some light (get it :)) on which ones I could actually look at replacing mine with that would be great! Oh and I'm looking at OEM ones, not just some random rear lights :)

The new 09 led rear lights will fit on your car, there are a few members on here that have done it. You may need to use vagcom after fitting them but im not sure.
 
If you have a 3door 53reg A3 you can buy the facelift rear lights and there straight swoop. No vagcom needed. If you have a 5door sportsback A3 you will need a new loom and vagcom to code the lights i believe.

Hope that helps. Your best bet for getting the lights would be to try Stoke Audi.

Silly question but are the reverse lights brighter on the original lights? They look smaller on the newer style and I was wondering if that made them not so bright.

Interesting question! Looking at it logically you've got the same wattage bulb shining through a smaller hole so there must be less light coming through. But as the light is still directed toward the driver of a vehicle behind I doubt that it appears any darker* :think:

LOL, its not so much to inform another driver as to helping me see behind as its kinda dark where I have to reverse my car out of my back garden to get up my drive.

I'm with you on that, I rely on my reverse lights to avoid smashing my neighbours incosiderably parked Jag (he's a c**ksucker, so not bothered about damaging it, but don't want to scratch mine).

Aha now you've said that....yes less light for sure! Perhaps some sort of flood light attached to the roof is in order :sly:
 
Thanks for the replies guys :) When you say "a straight swap" - what does that mean for mere mortals like me that are not very good with a screwdriver? Is it something I could actually contemplate doing or would I probably break something trying..

Oh and yeah I was behind an Audi with these lights the other day and thought the indicator light wasnt very bright because it has such a small gap to be shown through, but that might just be because it was in a well lit area... I mean I'm sure there is a certain amount of light that has to be emitted for it to meet EU regulations etc so I'm guessing its safe.

Follow the instructions in the manual for changing a rear bulb.

All you have to do is undo one big plastic nut and then pull the entire light unit off the car. Put the new one on in its place and replace the plastic nut.

Job done!

Sounds too easy!
How much do they cost from Audi then (roughly) ? If its a fair bit more than the ones you are selling and yours are in good condition then I would be interested in buying yours off you (once I have been paid next week!)
 
and they are the brand new style like in those pictures in this thread? Got to ask also, why are you selling them?

I'm only selling, as the car will be going soon. I much prefer them to the originals, but there's no point keeping them on a car that I won't have, is there?
