Much difference? I am after an auto estate for various reasons and have had DSG before and loved it. So i am looking at Passat DSG 2.0 TDI. However it would seem i can get an A4 tiptronic a lot cheaper, thoughts?

They are fundamentally different transmissions and personally having driven Audi's fitted with each type the DSG is much better.

The multi-tronic that Audi use on the larger cars is basically a steel belt running between shaped cones and the gear points are 'artificially' set by the system but the engine note does not always appear to match the gearing and can appear quite strange.

The DSG or S-tronic as Audi call it is much the same as a manual gearbox but with electronic clutches giving the advantages of a manual and an automatic particularly in connection with fuel economy. Because the Passat has a transverse engine it is also available with the DSG.

Audi obviously think the S-tonic is better than the multi-tronic because they are developing version of it to suit the longitudinal mounted engines used by most of the Audi range apart from the A3 and TT.

If you have used a DSG and liked it then make sure you drive a multi-tronic and that you are happy with the way it behaves before making your choice.

DSG is damn good, have no complaints about it at all (ATM, give me time, lol)

I do find it funny how we complain about these marvels, the DSG is a wonderful example of engineering.

I agree. I will never buy another car without one. The best of both worlds. Automatic for driving in traffic and 'manual' using the paddles when driving normally. Still brings a smile to my face every time I'm accelerating and I just click a paddle to change up. And it does not have any of the increased mpg that goes with a normal automatic.

Having just spend two weeks in Germany and Austria it was great on the mountain passes where you need to change gear every few yards!!

Couldnt agree more, I love the paddle use & will also not have another car without, as you say brings smile to the face whenever I use it & I never take it for granted, really is a sublime system to use & also as you say on long drives what a pleasure to use, driving to italy was great, cant stand manuals anymore as it messes my knees up aswell, even though driving the 900 odd miles to italy almost rendered my right leg unusable, lol, stumbled out of the car like John Wayne just got of a horse, great gearbox & setup.

The new 140's have some poke aswell so must be fun, was passenger in new one months back & it flew without a remap, was truly shocked.

So to clarify, S-Tronic and DSG are the same thing? Multitronic or Tip-Tronic are the old inferior versions? Yes?
Thanks People.

Basically Yes. S-tonic and DSG are the same thing by different names.

Just to clarify - Tip-tronic is actually a trade name registered by Porsche to cover the action of pushing a lever forward or back or clicking paddles to change gear.

So both S-tronic/DSG and Multitonic are tip-tronic is the way they can be used.
