2.0 TDI remap - economy and smooth power - where?

I know this is the age old question: "Which remap is best for my 2.0 TDI?", but I would be interested to hear back from those who monitor their economy closely enough to be able to give me a true comparison of their fuel economy before and after a remap. Of course I'd also like to know what remap you used.

Economy under fast driving conditions don't concern me as much as motorway "economy driving" conditions. I can currently expect 600 miles to a tank with 400 or so being motorway driving, the rest being a mixture of fun roads, main roads and town driving. Motorway driving generally sees me at 53-56mpg unless I'm trying very hard.

Custom Code seem to have good feedback. All remaps seem to offer similar max torque and power figures, but economy and smooth delivery are what I'm after. Any power graphs/figures from power runs would be good too.

I'm not asking much then!

I've run my A3 for 4 years with a Revo remap (as you would expect as I'm a dealer), 53,000 miles and 50.2mpg overall. Most motorway journeys come out about 55mpg and schlepping up to Norwich on the A140 ('orrible 50mph road) averages around 60-65mpg.

When caning it, I get about 45mpg.

this tread my be useful for you. there is my graph from dyno run, but with massive torque, which i believe (after explaining to me by devonmikeyboy) is wrong. but bhp is ok. after putting downpipe to make complete exhaust system im running on 192 bhp and 317 torque. still deliver around 43-46 mpg on motorways with doing 80-85 mph. hope this helps. if you wanna know more speak to mikey as his experience is impressive.

Becareful as the turbos are iffy on your model.. They tend to pop :S

madluke - That is one sharp torque spike! That worries me, and I doesn't give too much confidence in a smooth drive. It must leap away from you as you pass 1,800rpm does it? Given the less than impressive lifespan of the 2.0 TDI's turbo, I'd rather not subject it to whatever pressure is used to produce that spike myself. Yowch!

kaz219 - I have heard that Revo remaps push the engines harder than most, and produce a pretty sharp torque spike, much like madluke's. As you say, the turbo's don't have the reputation on these engines, so I am looking for a smooth, wide torque curve, obviously higher than the stock curve, and good cruising economy.

I've had a chipped uk (st3) fast road map on my car for 5 months now, the economy I'm getting now is around 47mpg, from a full tank, I get 500miles.

I'm told this is due to it being a quattro and so drinks more than fwd.

I'm happy with the map as it is very smooth and can change gears at lower rpm than the stock map.

I was getting about the same 55mpg at about 85 (does anyone drive on a motorway at 70?).

I never managed 70mph motorway trips before I started my present job. It requires 150 miles/3 hours of driving every day. When doing the kind of speeds I prefer, the stress levels incurred due to being "held up" by people doing "more legal" speeds were starting to show. So...I started leaving a little earlier, kicking back and relaxing at 70mph all the way up the M5/M4, and found myself in better spirits in the evenings.

So you were averaging 55mpg when cruising at 85mph? Are all your motorways downhill up there in Yorkshire?

I would also recommend GIAC or Motorsport development both offer amazing software with super smooth delivery and also good mpg returns,GIAC is the dearer of the 2 but MSD are also amazing with various people doing there Genius software round the country and they are also a bit cheaper

Just had a word with Custom Code and apparently I can expect to get "the same" economy on my gentle throttle 70mph cruises as I do now. Not really what I'm looking for! I am under no illusion that using my increased power will incur more fuel usage - I was an engine mapper by trade after all - but did expect better cruising economy. Back to the drawing board!

phil76 - I know Stu and Kenny, and used to be a Genius dealer for them. Unfortunately since I closed down my workshop, there are no dealers within easy reach of me anymore. Very frustrating! I tried calling them a few minutes back actually, the greedy Northerners are still on lunch though!
