hi guys,

Maybe a dead end thread, but I'd like to know my options for the minute.

I know that the V6 isn't the engine to tune cheaply, but I am just wondering what there is to do to the 2.4 to make a little more power, maybe up it to 200bhp.

I have seen re-maps available on websites up to 181bhp, but just wondering if there is anything else?

Any suggestions, approx power increase and cost would be appreciated.

Thanks alot!!!

You'd struggle to get 181PS from a 2,4 V6 remap, be it a 165 or later 170PS version.

Cheapest (and most straight forward) route would be to fit a 2,8 30V, which at least has a starting point of 193PS...

Yer the usual NA engine tuning methods apply, but its just so expensive its not worth it.

You'd be looking at porting/polishing the heads and possibly fitting larger valves, fitting more aggressive cams and fitting some exhaust manifolds designed carefully to provide the optimal power band. Problem is doing all that might well give you 200hp, but you'll have spent enough to have baught a complete S4 motor, fitted it and remapped it to 300hp.

so basically... don't even think about bothering! lol!

I think I'll just stick to the cosmetics for now. Seems one hell of a lot cheaper!

I'm only 18, so I don't think the insurance company will like me changing the engine!

I plan on getting an s4, rs4, or rs6 when i'm 21, so need to save rather than spend.... lol! Yes, i know its a bit of an ambition, but we can all dream can't we!?

Thanks for your comments though guys!

2.4 is still a quick car. When I were a lad 18 year olds drove Nova Flings or Renault 5 Campus's. Or a Rover 800 in my case.

It ought to toast your mates cars already! I'm 28 now. I feel so old!

My 2.5TDI V6 is dynoed at 196hp, shurely shome mishtake you have a 2.4 petrol V6 and you are looking to tune up to 181? How much have you got now?

perhaps because your 2.5TDI has a turbo, and has been chipped...

The 2.4 V6 makes about 170hp as standard.

Yeh, it's quick enough for the moment. Rover 800 at 18. Thats cool! I do like them.

It does make mince meat out of my mates cars, i.e. 1979 Land rover Series 3, Micra 1.3, 106 1.1, and my girlfriend's Rover 214i (my old car).

Trouble is, I like to compare cars generally, not for the fact that i have a quick/large car for my age. For example, i know a 30 year old guy who has a 350bhp Escort Cosworth, and has had a sierra saphire cossie too at 23.

Meh. I'm just greedy me! Just always dreamed of having faster cars than i should have for my age, hence the s4/rs4/rs6 at 21.

It's strange, My engines have been getting progessively smaller since I was 18, the Rover, then the Saab 9000 and now the Audi with a trifling 1.8. The turbo makes up for it, though...

Mind you, I suppose I've had more than my fair share of company cars with silly power to balance things out....

Hi Sam I just noticed your near me. if you wanted to upgrade to a 2.8q I was thinking about selling mine some time soon

There was a German tuner that offered a type of upgrade that would to get the 2.4 to 195-200bhp but this requires extensive tuning up to stage 3 - remap, exhaust, induction and other changes.

I plan to swap the 2.4 for a 2.8 then remap it afterwards. But unfortunately I'm very tight on cash at the moment.

i wouldnt waste time swapping a 2.4 for a 2.8 then remapping it, just get yourself a V8 and install that.

The gain from 170 to 200hp while nice isnt really worth it, when for much the same cost you can install a V8 and get 300hp...

A 4.2 V8 was also on the cards but it'll be interested to know the running costs of running a V8. If I think it's reasonable then I might go the V8 route.

Ha.. Knew you wouldn't resist!

I think you'll find there won't be much difference in gas mileage between a stock 4,2L V8, and a reworked, peakier 2,4 30V.

To attain 200PS, you'll definitely need mild head work, so you'll definitely get more air in.

And correspondingly more gas.

I hereby suggest that, henceforth, Audi don't bother putting anything less than a V8 in their cars. This will save us a lot of effort later on.

Oh! Lymington, no, not far at all! Thanks for the offer, but I tried that one (insurance) and no one wanted to insure me on a 2.8 for sensible money. Thanks anyway!

About the "Stick a v8 in it" thing...... HAELLS YAH! Aren't v8's just the holy grail of engines!?

We have an M5 in at work at the moment with full Milltek exhaust system. It sounds like god! My boss said to me today, "sounds aweful doesn't it!?Can't hear myself think" I just said "it's a V8, theyre meant to be heard!"

Sienna, I really do respect you for the whole V8 in B5. It's awesome!

Just out of interest, anyone heard of any latest developments about the b5 with the RS6 V8 engine?

Last email I had from him, he was still trying to find a way to lengthen the hood and fenders. He didn't mention any running issues.

Thats alright mate. who did you get quotes through out of interest? because i went on confused dot com and the cheapest they quoted me was about £1500 and I currently insure the car for a year for £440. so i don't rate them very highly

Why lengthen the front of the car?

You've just shown the block fits the car without lengthening anything, and the 40v heads should fit because of the 30v A4's fitting...

I cant see the problem myself?

the 30v v6 fitting proves the width, but the 40v v8 head might be longer than the 32v head, depending on if its got extra stuff like the variable inlet cam timing etc which could be hanging on the back of the head.

only guess's though.

The RS6 has a unique block, not shared with any other V8 block, in 32 or 40V form.

It's designed to be auto only, and runs the massive torque converter, the same as the Passat / Phaeton W8. The ring gear is also a larger diameter, this block does not bolt up to any manual tranny, 01A or 01E. It requires a very thick adapter plate, that makes the engine sit so far forward, even without air con, and if the radiator was placed in the rear of the car, the fron clip won't fit.

It requires a lot of fabrication to get it to fit, the firewall would have to be seriously compromised to allow the engine to move backwards, propshaft will have to be shortened.

In short, it reads like this:

Beat / bend it till it fits!

I'll dig up the pictures, and you'll see what I mean.

Here we go.

RS4 engine in B5 - note spacers fabricated to allow the front CLIP to clear the block!!

Front clip and radiators well aft of fenders - without lengthening fenders and hood, this car won't be running headlamps!

well surely the input shaft on the transmission controls where the engine sits?

So if you were to modify the 01E/X box to bolt to the rear of the RS6 motor, with a custom flywheel and clutch, you could have the gearbox on its standard mounts, using standard props/shafts, and the engine would sit further back...

Clearly its hard to tell from those photos whether there is enough room, but i cant really see why not, as the block isnt really going to be any longer. Its the same piston/bore spacing as the earlier engines and therefore the overall block length is going to be around the same? Certainly not the good 6-12" longer that the images suggest!

With all the stuff on the front of the RS6 engine in their original positions, there's no room.

The easiest way is to fit the RS6 crank, pistons and rods into a regular 40V block. The RS6 block, besides the fatter rear of the block to accept the huge torque converter, is also slightly longer than regular V8.

Coupled with this adapter plate, it got even longer...

he needs to get the grinder out :p

Its actually quite funny to think that i'm having mild issues fitting it into the landrover, not due to length, but the width of the motor...

I couldnt get it to drop down any lower than that...

The original TD5 engine mounting brackets were mashed against the engine on both sides, so those will be getting cut off, and i'm not sure if theres going to be enough room for the PAS pump in its normal location on the near side. From my rough measurements there is JUST enough room for the exhaust manifolds, without having to raise the nose of the gearbox from its standard position!

Luckily the gearbox sits slightly offset to the nearside, meaning the large oilfilter housing that sticks off the offside of the block just about clears the chassis rails.

My next step is to get the adaptor made up, cut the offending parts off, then get it nestled within the rails and sort some mounts out!

To say you've got your work cut out for you here, would be putting it mildly!

I'm currently with Norwich union, at £900 for the year fully comp. Very cheap i thought, 2nd cheapest was churchill at £1500. lol! I spent hours looking, norwich union wouldn't even quote me on a 2.8, nor would churchill, and comparison sites were giving the usual Uber high quotes. How old are you then, if you don't mind my asking?

I am 24 with 5 years no claims. yeah i suppose at 18 you would get some silly quotes. i always found admiral/elephant cheaper than norwich union. this has seemed to have gone off topic a bit. Would the pes supercharger for the 2.8 fit a 2.4? because there was some bloke over in poole selling one

^^^ Yep, the G2 will fit all 30V engines.
