RS3

Makes you wonder what they are doing out testing a standard S3 on the track! We need to see under that bonnet!

In the end I gave the car the benefit of the doubt and when she arrived it looked lovely, but I had it remapped / intake + filter inside 200 miles as it lacked any urgency.

My S3 is currently not modified in any way and you know what? I'm very happy with the performance - I just don't understand why you were so dissapoited with a car than can hit 60mph in under six seconds, a ton in 13 and a bit seconds and out accelerate pretty much 95% of cars you'll meet on the road, and in any gear... I've got a Cayman S (well, the missis has!) and that's fast, agile and so on... but I don't exactly feel cheated when I drive my S3. My S3 is fast, has shed loads of grip, is subtle to look at yet still says performance, oh and it makes a nice noise as it goes about its business. I don't even feel the need to fit a performance exhaust. I guess my only gripes are the steering feel (lack of) and lack of support from the standard seats (wish I'd got buckets...), aside from that, I think it more than deserves the S badge... in the last six years I've had an R32 (mk1), Golf V GTi (AmD mapped to 250bhp), V6 (mk2) TT and you know what? The S3 is quicker (and better in most departments) than all of those cars. My TPW anyway... as for the RS3? If I can get one for under £35k with a few essential options - I could be tempted...

Interesting point.

I also had a MK5 Golf (REVO map- approx 250bhp) before the S3 and the S3 is least as good to drive IMO.

Ive read numerous articles about how `Great` the MKV is/was and how `Dull` the S3 was.
Rubbish IMO, just not the case.

Maybe my skills arent sensitive enough to pick up the subtleties that make the Golf `great` but I just dont get it.
In fact just as a comparison exercise, my old CTR made the Golf feel..., dare I say, dull.....

Performance wise, the std S3 didnt feel a great deal quicker than a REVOd MKV though.

Sorry, bit off topic.

Anyway, I will have my RS3 in Sprint blue and delivered with a REVO map please. And I will have won the lottery by then anyway so it doesnt matter how much it costs.)

cheers
Paul

I can only compare a few decent test drives of an S3 to my experience with our Mk5 GTI, but IMO the S3 is miles better. The S3 has sharper steering, a better gear change, plenty more grip (obviously), sits noticeably flatter through corners and it even rides better over normal city roads.

But, costing 50% more again (Australian pricing at least) the S3 should do all of those things better. And I suspect that's where the GTI gains better press. Simply because it is a substantially cheaper car.

Price aside, though, I've no doubt the S3 will be a better drivers car and a hell of a lot more fun than our GTI.

Like the man said, all of the above:icon_thumright:

Aren't the new TT and current A3 different platforms? Would that not make it expensive for the necessary changes to deliver an RS3 based on the TT-RS's engine, mechanics and tranmission, etc?

Seems there is still no hard evidence of an RS3 in the current A3 model!

Anyone seen today's Autocar Magazine?

It says that the RS3 is go for launch towards the end of 2012 (new platform) with 335bhp, 7 speed DSG and Torque Vectoring Diff.

Let's hope that it is not another false alarm.

I'm starting to save now!!!! :eyebrows:

(Also posted on the RS3 Forum but I guess that this Forum has a greater readership)

I read about it online.
I think the launch date is a load of ****** TBH.
Autocar have some creative licence to their journalism at times... they first announced the RS3 in 2004 I think... quoting a twin turbo v6!
Some other mags (Car and Evo) are claiming a 2010 launch for the RS3, which given the test mule is hammering around the 'ring now would make more sense, unless they are going to spend 3 years refining the thing .
A final hurrah for the current chassis to keep interest until the new A3 arrives in 2011 fits a sensible product marketing strategy...
I wouldn't expect to see the RS3 version on that chassis for a good while yet.

I agree with Jamie. Even if it is wishful thinking.

Spoke to dealer today with regard new S4 and he stated RS3 would be launch model on new platform, 2011.

That's the million dollar question right there tbh.
I pray they do it, as I'll be putting my deposit down in no time, however, I'm not sure they have a green light on it yet.
I hope, that the economic down turn and the green debate actually help reinforce the business case for it... people down sizing and searching for a more 'economical' performance car???
All speculation, but I really do hope it see's the light of day (next year please ;) )

TT-RS hasn't been much of delay though, has it? It looks like they're not sticking to their usual end of life run for the RS models anymore.

It's the first one to come out early in a product life cycle though isn't it? RS4 and RS6 are end of life models.
And now it's a tried and tested unit, dropping the running gear in the 8P chassis should be a relatively easy exercise*

* by relative, what I mean is, easier than starting from pencil and paper on a drawing board.

Got to agree with you Jamie, really hope they bring the RS3 out at the end of the 8P cycle.
I have now decided not to buy an RS4 avant and wait to see what happens with regard the RS3, for 2 reasons, one being I think petrol is going to go up dramaticly in the next 12-18 months or less and I fear the **** will drop out of RS4's in the next 12 months or so, current prices for the Avant appear to have increased alot due to the short supply therefore dealers are asking silly money which I am not prepared to pay.
Roll on the RS3, if not facelift S3.

Having the same issue, want a late (57 pref) Avant in anything other than red but prices are nuts at the mo. Am considering a new S4 if I can get 10% off.

I'm guessing they took inspiration from the TT-RS:
