Bought an 80GB PS3 yesterday. First thoughts are not at all good.

The PSN is pathetic compared to XBOX live - so slow to find and host games - you cant even play with people outside your region with certain games. PS3 graphics seem nothing special, many games only run at 720p instead of 1080i/p. No in-game reward system that earns extra features either.

The controller seems very small and feedback from the joystciks seems jerky, very uncomfortable to hold as your hands are so close together!

Game selection seems small and limited, many just seem to be straight 'ports' from other platforms.

To be honest I'm gutted with it! After all the hype I had heard I was really was expecting something special from this.

The one plus point is the Blu-ray DVD player, quality of the picture is excellent.

Anyone else got one? Are you happy with it?

to me the PS3 is just a glorified blu ray player, nothing else. My mate loaned one off his mate for 2 weeks while he went on holiday, we were both very dissapointed with it as a games system. Just lacked any gaming experiance compared to the 360. No rumble feature on the control pad either.

No rumble feature on the control pad either.

There is on mine, still not happy with it though to be honest. Maybe it will grow on me in time. I was just expecting a leap forward from XBOX360 and its just the same or worse in all areas bar the DVD player.

Oh well, maybe the XBOX360 replacement due in a couple of years might be what I need instead!.

so you got rid of your 360 for a ps3?!?!? school boy error! IMO the 360 beats it in every dept apart from the blu ray, as you know 360 doesnt have it. Yes the 360 has major hardware problems but if you get a falcon (175w) power brick it should last a lot better than the older 360's. LIVE you have to pay for but its leaps and bounds ahead of the PSN. The games, theres much more out there. The 360's control pad IMO is much better to use than the PS3 one. The 360 dash is a breeze to use, great layout, simple. The 360's dvd drive is loud though, BUT you dont notice that when the volume on the tele is on. I too was expecting a leap forward over the 360, and we should expect that, as it came out quite some time after the 360, but alas, no.

I changed from the 360 due to having FIVE 360's blow up/fail over the past couple of years! The Blu-ray was also a bonus. I think I will keep the PS3 for the blu-ray as the picture is awesome on my new TV - But might have to track down another 360 for gaming if I cant get used to it!

if you get another 360 make sure you get one thats powered by a 175w power brick NOT a 203w one. 175w are falcon motherboards which dont suffer the 3 red rings. most 360's built after september/october 2007 are falcons.

Cheers for the heads up mate, I will bear that in mind. My current one was 14 months old when it expired so was probably a 203w version. Might treat myself to an elite version in the next few weeks.

i cant get on with the xbox system myself, whats goin on with the controllers?? they are huge and heavy and u have to replace the batteries like every 3 hours!! i guess if ur used to old xbox systems then its second nature for hand positioning but that goes for the ps controllers too, which i've used since i was like 14, so i see no fault with them whatsoever, nice and light and u charge them up thru the console, obvious idea i would of thought that microsoft slipped up on, as for the online experience, u have to pay for the xbox one and the ps one is free, plus, ur forgettin the 360 has been out for much longer than the ps3 and for the 1st 18 months it was shockin on line too, its gonna hav a few problems, like any other next gen gaming system, the developers are still tryin to find how far they can push it, whereas all the testing is more advanced on the 360 as its been out longer. so dont right it off just yet eh!!

I think the fact it came out so much later than the 360 is the main reason for my dis-appointment - I was expecting a leap forward in technology/gaming/graphices etc etc but its no different to the 360. Blu-ray is a nice bonus though!

Yeah I see you point of view on the controller sizing, I'm quite a big guy so the XBOX one just suited me so well. I'll keep going with the PS3 for a few weeks.

Just seems so small when playing a racing game your right finger is on the trigger and your left on the thumbwheel - it just feels so un-natural at the moment. Hopefully I can get used to it, otherwise it will become my nephew's xmas present!!

(BTW you can charge 360 controllers from the console, same as the PS3.)

i was allways a PS boy, had a PS1 and PS2, then went for a 360. Much prefer the 360 controller, especially the triggers. The normal original xbox controller felt awfull. I find the batteries to last a lot longer than 3 hours too, more like 2 weeks maybe more with good daily usage.

ps3 is great console i never use mine but loved it for 2 weeks then got bored of games don't have time to waste .. if you want your house to burn down get a xbox 360!!!

i have owned playstations all my life and the odd xbox,i prefere the ps3 to the xbox all day long,,,for what i use mine for any way blu-ray i prefere the controllers console looks better ps2 playback well on my 60gb anyway, and most my mates have a ps3..although xbox has loads more games which i find crap as before the ps3 launch they were sayin the ps3 would have a lot more titles availiable than they actually have.

i been ps since they came out.... hated the xbox religiously. 360 came out and i refused to like it until i played 1.
ps3 took t long to come out and was rediculusly expensive. how ever when it did come out my m8 got 1 with nfs carbon. i thought the graphics were not much faster than a ps2 (on nfs carbon) and the controler was to sensative. altho it looks nicer than the 360, i think i perfer the xbox to a ps3!

I've had a PS3 for a few weeks now, having also been a PS diehard for years. The XBox has never really interested me; only PS has Gran Turismo, and while Project Gotham looks very nice, it's always been a poor relation.

Right now I've only got GTA IV, GT5 and Drake's Fortune but already I'm well-pleased with it. Online play works very well given that it's not yet as well developed as Xbox Live. The Blu-ray steals a good march over the 360 while we wait for the games to catch up (and I'm sure they will as developers become more accustomed to Sony's SDK).

PS3 has better reliability
Online is free and is liveable its not the end of the world
Software companies are still getting to grips with the technology apart from Sony ofcourse
Sony have been in this industry for years...new games such as GT5, Heavy Rain, Ghost Recon many more good games coming out..Lots of exclusives as well.
A lot of games do come in 1080p but most of those from Sony.

GT5 will blow Forza out of the water, and Blu ray movies well the HD movie market belongs to them practically.

Value for money because the blu ray player on its own cost quite a bit. Online is free, console is very reliable and if you have a 60GB its backward compatible. Id say its still value for money. PSN is still yet to implement features already on XBox live but time will tell. They are always trying to improve it

i prefer the ps3 for reliabilaty as you have 2 send the 360 back 2 m/s at some point for breaking.
i like ps3 conn as they are lighter and smaller then 360.
on line is fine(free)can be a bit slow but sony are just coming into on line gaming so should inmprove soon.

This is completely academic - it's personal preference. I have both and on COD 6 can see no graphical difference between the two to be honest. Both output in 1080P. Both look immense.

Bottom line, they are two different ways of achieving the same end.

And PSN may be slow. But it's also free :)

People I know with ps3 have had to have the replaced because they have broken. Yeah my 360 had the ring of death *cough* twice *cough* but atleast microsoft extended the warrenty to 3 years and offered a pretty quick turn around getting the console back to you.

I have both but only use the xbox for gaming. All I use the ps3 for is a dvd/bluray player and have put a bigger hard drive in to load movies on

The PS3 vs XBOX360 battle is always a little pointless I think, most games nowadays are released across both platforms. Yes there are a few 'console specific' releases for both, but lets be honest, over the last few years they have decreased rapidly!

The graphical performance of both is excellent, my girlfriend has an uncle in Australia that writes and tests code for up and coming releases, so he spends a lot of time using both systems - even he says that the performance of both is very very similar.

At the end of the day, it come down to personal preference. There are advantages and disadvantages for both:

XBOX live is "supposedly" better than PSN, but you have to pay a monthly fee for it, PSN is free
XBOX is cheaper than PS3, well you get wireless and Blu Ray with EVERY PS3 version and Microsoft expect something retarded like £70 for a wireless unit!
Both consoles have running issues, although the XBOX one seems much more of a pain than the PS3's issues.

As for the controller, well surely that comes down to personal preference? I for one prefer the PS3, but I have quite small hands and find it easier to use.

To me the XBOX controller always felt like it was badly designed, the joysticks are all over the place - yes you get used to it, but that's like putting the steering wheel of the car on the roof then saying "you will get used to it!"

At least the xbox 360 controller was designed from the ground up instead of rehashed like the ps3 controller.*Cough* ps2 controller.

I have both consoles and have always preferred the xbox controller....the ps3 controller is too small, too fiddly and is made from clay.

And there is no "supposedly" about it, xbox live is far superior and better established than psonline......You get what you pay for, hence why Live has Double the subscribers of psonline.

If you compare many games such as fallout 3/Oblivion on both consoles, you will find that the ps3 struggles more so than the xbox 360 and the reviews reflect this. Many games do not port very well to the ps3 and thats a fact.

Although developers are getting the hang of the technology now, many prefer developing for the less complicated architecture of the xbox 360.

At the end of the day its the games that matter and the xbox wins hands down in this department, lets hope Gran Turismo 5 is worth the wait otherwise whats the point in having a ps3.

Talk about dangling a carrot, how much more do they plan to tease people with its release, its actually laughable.

I will admit though Metal Gear Solid is brilliant and takes me back to my ps1/ps2 days as is littlebigplanet but otherwise i only use my ps3 for watching blurays.

I think this seems to be the case for most people who own both the consoles.....ps3 used for bluray and media and Xbox 360 used for gaming.

Its a pointless argument pitting the 360 against the PS3. Both consoles games are all ported other than exclusive titles that are made for that machine so are better than ported games. As for Modern Warfare 2 its a 600p game and was ported to the 360 and PS3 from the pc, they use 600p (only the PC can display the game at 1080p) they done this so it runs at 60fps and feels great without too much graphical compromise due to the game engine they tweaked from MW (cod4).

My preference is the 360, Xbox live is just far user friendly and better for the online gaming and also the exclusive games to the 360 make it just that little bit better.

Pure comedy, I have PS3 XBOX360 and a Wii and the Wii wins hands down. The 360 takes up a whole cupboard of it's own by the time you add wireless, fans, HD player that was a massive waste of time and money, and not forgetting the noise the 360 puts out! the only good thing about it is forza. The PS3 is a great bit of kit that will play blu ray to the same quality as a standalone unit but can also play games, downside is they are all crap (I only like car racing games) Who cares about controllers, it's up to the user as to what they like, I use bothwith no problems. But the Wii, nobody can knock it. It has normal no frills graphics, great interactivity, good games and I have also nothing bad to say about the controllers.

I also have a wii but thats another story!

I have one the new modern warfare 2 Limited Edition 250gb JASPER xbox 360 elites and can tell you it is as quiet as a mouse, especially when you install games to the harddrive which gets rid of the disc noise completely.

As for wireless i have just bought a new wireless "N" adapter for the 360, something which the ps3 does not support! and its far superior to My previous G+ Network.

Bluray is good on the ps3 but not so much anymore, players are becoming far superior now to the ps3 and the ps3 is becoming the lesser quality bluray player on the market.

PS3 does support wireless n, bought a netgear one last month so i dont have the cable going across the house.

Well got my bro a PS3 for xmas/bday the other day & graphics are nice, most games run at 720p but its good enough tbh, cost 300 notes with 3 games & months worth of free game/bluray rentals with blockbuster, checked online in numerous places & tbh they all came out near the same price, convenience was, BB was round the corner, so opted for that, nicer smoother graphics on footie game, but obviously need to try some better games now when money is about, but bluray was ok with animation, need to test with some proper bluray movies, but wasnt bought for this tbh, so minor, mostly gaming for him, he's fairly chuffed too & I like it, keep him quiet for a few years, lol.

No, sorry they do not.

Just because you bought a wireless N router, does not mean the ps3 supports it.

I think you will find you ps3/router is defaulting to Wireless G as N Routers work will A-B And N networks.

Yeah you're right, they don't support 'N', not that it really matters as the data transferred while playing online is minimal, so it doesn't make much difference.

802.11g has a 54kbps transfer rate, which is faster than any broadband supplier in the UK (not that you ever get the quoted speed...) so again, it's not really necessary.

At least the xbox 360 controller was designed from the ground up instead of rehashed like the ps3 controller.*Cough* ps2 controller.

That's because everyone kicked off about the original controller because it actually the same size as the XBOX itself! As for using a PS2 controller - why change something that already works so well?

I'm not arguing with you, personally I think they're both great machines, but I just didn't want to pay for LIVE, I wanted a Blu Ray player, and I don't get on very well with the XBOX controller. It made sense to get a PS3 for me...

Yeah just to add, you'd be lucky to get 150mbps on N anyway even with 20/40mhz enabled, let alone 54 on a G connection, these wireless routers are so overstated its unreal, tested number of them & the throughput even with the damn router next to the poxy laptop or desktop is terrible, belkin had a nice lawsuit for this very thing in the US, N is supposed to work in the next town BTW just incase you wernt aware, but be lucky to reach my kitchen.

makes me laugh how all the PS3 boys rant on about GT5 and only GT5, is it REALLY worth owing a PS3 just for 1 game?!

That's not true! :p All we complain/ go on about is how delayed GT5 is. And to be fair...I have a 360 at my house, the only game i use it for is Forza 3. So is it really worth owning a 360 for one game? I use my PS3 far more often. As mentioned, it's all down to preference.

lve actually been thinking of getting an xbox, just for one game.

I agree it's all down to preference and you will never come to any agreed final solution/settlement between owners of both machines. OP > Give it time like with anything and you'll learn to live, deal and perhaps love the way the Ps3 works and interacts.
IMO, I've tried both having a 360 for a year before PS3 came out then traded straight in for my roots of the PS series. Sony don't have a decade of gaming consoles for nothing and they haven't gone wrong so far. the PS3 is a home entertainment/ multimedia / games console machine. A lot of developers haven't reached the potential of the PS3's chip and graphics yet, although there are 1-2 games out there has reached close to the limit of the bluray disc capacity they still say there is many years of creating next gen games on it. What is their latest release by 2011 PS3 will have the technology to play real 3d games (the ps3 in your house) without the need of addon packs, just a firmware update. All in time for the stable release of 3D ready TV's.
PS3 and Xbox both have similarities and unique personalities. It's like comparing a blackberry/samsung to a iphone.

But for me I'd still stay with the PS3 due to it entertains the GF with her favourite tv series and media servers for her girly night parties to play her playlists from her itunes on her laptop. And i can benefit from all it's features and exclusives i've grown up to love with.

The very basic fact of this argument is... Unless you want the PS3 specific titles, there is no point buying one.

ALL multiformat games are written for the PC/Xbox and ported across to the PS3 (BADLY).
The way the PS3's CPU works is completely different to how the Xbox works and it is capable of far more impressive graphics than 99% of multi format games show.

The PS3 is far more complicated and time consuming to write for but when developers do it...It's worth it! Look at games like Uncharted 2 and forthcoming titles like Heavy Rain and GT5. Technically they blow the Xbox out the water. Sony just need to offer developers greater financial incentives to develop PS3 only titles.
Developers have pushed the Xbox as far as it'll go, technically, whereas the PS3 hasn't even peaked yet.

For the record i own both systems and strongly believe that the PS3 is by far the more capable machine.

tbh most of what is being said about both consoles. theres alot of arguements based on facts about when they were first released. xbox fans will like the xbox and ps fans will like the ps3. Simple as that tbh. Both are good for different reasons. personal preference is the key

totally agree, me and my mates argue all the time about which is better, they all have ps3 im only one with xbox so i get shouted down everytime, i spend 90% of my time online playing codmw2 so to me online network is what im after the most, having played on ps3 the psn is utter crap, anyone who says any different is drunk, the rest of the comparisons are as said down to personal preference

i find the ps3 controller, small, flimsy, weak and uncomfortable to hold but only because im used to the chunkier, more solid feeling xbox one

ps3 has gran tourismo which has been put back so many times that now even japan dont have a release date for it
xbox has halo which totally kicks freggin *** and everyone knows it lol
plus the price, having been out for 2 years a new ps3 slimline costs what £250, a xbox 360 elite that doesnt suffer from rrod is £160
i think the ps3 runs quieter than xbox, sometimes mine sounds like a jet engine
but the xbox has no trouble recognising the 1st march 2010

its all swings and roundabouts really
