New S3 Brake Rust

Why would they paint them? Afterall if they did and the paint subsequently started to come off they would be liable for it. - Thats why any sensible dealership will refuse to paint them.
 
My dealer tells me that Audi HQ have clarified the situation by allowing dealers to paint disks if requested.
They have offered to change mine and spray them with a paint of their choice also the issue has been raised in Ingolsdadt resulting in dealers being told to photograph new vehicles coming through with the problem.

So far (just over 1000 miles) I've not got the rust coming through, but will be sure to get this sorted as and when it does!
I'll be following this thread to see how this develops for others!
I am glad however that they are recognising the issue rather than fobbing people off with some bull/s.

Please remember that my disc bells were rusty the day it was deliverd to the dealer (2 weeks after factory build) the car had not been on the road.
A 30K car should not be like this when you collect new from dealer, after a couple of years on the road maybe.
 
yes and? so where mine within about 2 weeks. The fact is that it should not happen at all full stop.

Perhaps to stop lots of unhappy customers crying about spending X on a car and it having rust on show within X amount of time. Would it not be better to paint the fcking things in hammerite (like I have) and it last for 18 months+?????

4000 miles and still no rust.

Don't forget the s3 has auto disc dry function in conjunction with auto screen wipe, ensuring that the hubs stay hot in rainy conditions.
 
Mine has rust developing as well... Not to concerned about it but it is not a nice thing to happen...

The Auto Dry Function will not stop the rusting from occuring on the discs, the clamping loads coming from the Auto Dry function will not be enough to keep the discs warm nevermind 'hot', they are only there to keep the discs dry, if the clamp loads where enough to keep the discs hot then you would feel them come on whilst driving.

Also the rust does not happen when the car is moving, with the wheels rotating the water doesn't get a chance to settle in to create rust.

The problem comes when the car is parked up undriven and there is a layer of water around the hubs.
 
I can't feel them coming on (disc dry function) but the brakes are noticably stronger in the wet! Cool.

Anyway 7000 miles - no rust.
 
I have joined this forum tonight because of this problem. I have just spoken to Audi Camberley about this and they say it is happening to all the S3s. Not acceptable really!.
I used to own an RX8 and this happened on them as well. Mazda received so many complaints that they started to treat and paint the affected area on warranty. It did the trick.
I think we need to start hasseling Audi Uk about this because it looks awful and we have all paid around the 30k mark for our cars.

I painted mine with hammerite smooth silver on my last 3 A3's/S3's. Does the job and looks smart.

Mine has just started to show rust same as my previous A3 , I painted those so I guess the same routine for these (hope it doesnt fall off the jack).Gives me chance to clean the insides of the wheels as well though.
 
Mine are starting to show a few rusty patches too.
 
Me too, had the S3 1 day and done 24 miles, rust showing already, *****!!

Will be going to the stealers re this issue, as previous posts 30+K and rusting after a day, not acceptable i'm afraid.
 
Do you want the dealer taking the wheels off. Potential Scratches On Alloys???????

I got rust on rear disc bells when del. only 15 miles on clock, not happy when cost this much !
 
i got mine before christmas and they're rusted to f@ck - well cheesed off - the brakes squeek alot too at low speed (slowing down to traffic lights for exampe) not impressed!!!
 
Mine are still not rusty after 15 months, brake squeal seems to be common mine has done it since new, mainly at low speeds but I have found it disapears when the brakes are really hot.

Mine's the same as markwiggys' - no brake rust (so far), but rear brakes squeal on each drive until they've had a few good stops. It really pee's me off! If an old 'banger' can stop without squeeking brakes.... a new Audi should be able to too!
 
Mine has tiny points of rust in the brake hub as well... not really concerned about it...

Brake squeaks at very low speeds, mine, mainly in the rear right... again nothing to worry.

Both this things are "features"... ahah. The rust is not nice but it is only superficial and nothing really to worry...

Is the unbelievably fast rusting of the brake discs common throughout the VAG range? I jetwashed my car at the weekend and within hours the discs were fully coated with rust. When i pulled to the end of the drive and stood on the brakes it nearly gave me whiplash! Same happens to my colleagues Seat Leon and VW Golf. If it's wet, they park up and the discs are covered in rust within hours.
Never seen this before!
 
Don't worry about rust on the brake disks it actually increases friction... lololol

But rust on brake disks is OK, cast iron so... The problem in the brake hub is more serious that is one thing that should no rust that easy... obviously they lacked some kind of treatment... but again, only superficial and not really a worry...

Ive noticed since the day I collected my car, it does sometimes dissappear particularly after the car has been valeted, I dunno what they use but it does the job for a few days until its damp again and back to sq1.
 
Cleaned mine and painted with hammerite,looks much better (also gave me a chance to clean the wheels while they were off)

Thanks for the pics. I just wondered if anyone had even tried waxoyl. It comes in spray form. You just spray it on, it gets rid of old rust and puts a layer of wax on.
 
I'm guessing Waxoyl would just melt as soon as the discs get hot, and it'll end up contaminating the pads, so probably not a good idea.
 
I wasn't planning on spraying the main part of the discs. But you may be right about the heat.
 
had my car in at audi for a couple of minor faults, i also complained about the rust on the discs, (not the brake surface) i was told this is common and cant do out.

so i have logged a complaint with audi cust services expressing my dissapointing views, i await a phone call from audi to see what they will do ????

ive had 3 other audis in the past and not 1 of them have done this.

cust services said wud i be happy if they changed them as a goodwill, i said 2 rite !!!

Teeside Audi offered to replace my discs but in the end I decided to strip and paint them myself, thought the brakes might never be the same again after being messed about with.
I used high quality rust remover and paint (used black) supplied by Frost Automotive Products.
Did the work in spring 2007 and they are still perfect, by the way I also got the first service free after making a stink in the showroom the day I collected my new S3.

By the way the dealer also paid for the materials.
 
I remeber this thread, mine have just started to go after 15,000 miles and 18 months, think I must have been lucky!
Going to sort them this weekend.
Trev - have you any pic's of your's with the black paint on the hubs? I was going to go silver, but Black could be quite neat?

You may remember mine were shot on the day I collected the car, think they used some sort of acid cleaner during the pdi/cleaning process.
On the plus side the rust had not had time to do a great deal of damage to the metal surface, probably why they have lasted reasonably well.

The black really looks quite good against the black caliper, trouble is can't remember the easiest way to add pic's.
