Care to nominate your favourite roads when you're out for a good long blast and bonding session with your motor ? I'm always looking for new ones to try so would appreciate any suggestions. My initial nominations and the ones I do most often are:

1. A835 from Dingwall to Ledmore (long way but worth it)
2. A483 from Llandovery to Welshpool
3. B4501 from Bala to Denbigh
4. A57 "Snake Pass" from Glossop to Sheffield
5. A537 "Cat & Fiddle" from Macclesfield to Buxton
 
Butter tubbs pass, blubber houses, Leeds to Whitby
 
The video below is one of my favourite roads.
Again, not me that's filmed it.
It's called the 'Cairn o'mount', and we call it the 'Cairn o'mount Grand Prix'.
For the non-scots members, 'Cairn' is scottish for a mound of stones.
This hill has a cairn at the top, which it's considered unlucky to pass without adding another stone to.
So 'Cairn o'mount' literally means 'mound of stones on top of the hill'.
My daughter thinks there's a giant gets you if you don't add a stone to his cairn!:laugh:

Found it on my map. B974 right ? Looks amazing. What's the blue car he catches up ith at the end ? Can't quite make it out .....

I'm guessing Civic Type R, or late model Focus.
Can't quite tell.
The video doesn't really give an impression of the altitude change from top to bottom.
It's much hillier than it looks.
 
Aye its in North Yorkshire, to be fair there are lots of decent road in that region.

Also between Harrogate and Wetherby etc you can find some nice quiet roads. Went for a blast the other night in a westfield megabusa which was great in the dark!!
 
Not done any of these `runs`, should have tried one when I had my CTR.

I should get out more....;)

Summer or winter...its sublime.
Steep climbs/descents, billiard tabe smooth in places, bumpy in others, adverse camber corners, stunning scenery....a real test of car and driver.

A6 - Kendal to Penrith or Penrith to Kendal

best done late at night in the summer
 
The Dukes Pass to Aberfoyle is awesome, well worth the journey.

best to do it outwith caravan season though!!!:rock:
 
We used to have a fairly regular A-S.net run...
Dundee, Blairgowrie, over Glenshee, Braemar, towards Ballater, **** Bridge, over the Lecht, Tomintoul, Aberlour, Dufftown, Keith....slog down the A96, then Colpy, Oldmeldrum, Ellon, Newburgh...Aberdeen...then a cool down run down the dual carridgeway back to Dundee for curry and beer.

That's a good run.

I'll second that. Also the A591 Grasmere to Keswick, and my old favorite from travelling back to university days, the A592 from Windermere to Penrith.

Whilst it is not a fast road but if you want a real sense of satisfaction you want to try the Hardknott and Wrynose passes in the Lake District. I have seen many drivers give up as it is really steep with 1 in 3 hair pin bends. Do it in a banger and you really wonder if you will reach the other side and back again!!

Very good road yes but i think the road from Congleton leading right to the Cat and Fiddle starting from Bosley crossroads is a better road.

Went over both on my bicycle the Wednesday after the Spring bank holiday. 1st time since I was 15!! Pleased I did not have to push once, although I'd forgotton how hairy brake fade is on a bike!!

You're right - if the Cat & Fiddle is crowded (weekends) that is a barnstorming alternative. Not done it enough times myself though .... thanks for reminding me.
 
Blubberhouses to Otley Iggu?

Take my car up there sometimes when I finish work early :)

I find the Cat and Fiddle too busy with slow pokers and also coaches etc but the road from Congleton is much much more quieter and more over taking places if you do get stuck behind someone.

I enjoy it more in my Polo G40 than the A3 as its EVEN more fun in a biscuit tin with 175bhp!

175bhp Polo! Brilliant, love crazy old school VW. Fond memeories of my old Corrados. Wish i had an old relic in the garage for weekends too.

I spent a week recently just north of Inverness and nearly all the roads were relatively quiet and great fun to drive. Especially some of the roads down from the very north of Scotland towards the north of Inverness area.

Another of my favourites is in Wales. The A4212 from Trawsfyndd to Y Bala. Again usually quiet, it's wide and with lovely sweeping bends across mostly open countryside.
 
From my origins in North Yorkshire!!!
North Yorkshire Moors - A171 out of Guisborough to Whitby - plenty of roads off here that are fun - head to Carlton then to Hutton le Hole (past Blakey Ridge), Roads near Commondale, A169 to pickering - ahh too many to mention!
 
Just remembered another fantastic one, the A686 from Penrith to Hexham via Alston. Used to scare myself silly over there in a Mk1 Fiesta Sport.

In fact, I had an awsome trip back to University from home... A592 + A686.

Must admit i've had some quite terrifying near misses on that road. Some my fault...some not. Usually caused by typical sunday drivers pootling along.
 
l go for a short blast from Hgte to blubberhouses then onto pool, then back to hgte via the leathley turn off. When the roads are quiet its quite a trip out :)

Me too - I think its now a 50mph zone all the way which will only make it worse as pottering dodderers clog up the road making overtaking even more of a challenge. Lovely twisty bits though and great scenery.

Under pressure from the missus to "book a family holiday in a nice cottage somewhere" - guess what ? Having read all these posts carefully and made a list of all the roads - I've booked a place in Hebden (North Yorkshire) within easy access of Blubberhouses, Butter Tubs, Wike etc. etc. I see lots of early morning drives for me here. Can't wait - really appreciate the tips folks.
 
There's nothing like disguising a selfish act as a kind gesture to the Mrs. Good work!! :thumbsup:
 
lads check out this site, i have done the scottish trek twice (the TT sport in the pics) now and its awesome, some of the best roads in scotland. the boys in there super cars enjoyed it a lot:superman:
 
The B6255. Amazing road. A friend and I hired a Lotus 111R a few months back and spent two days in Cumbria and North Yorkshire having fun. Snake Pass, Cat and Fiddle, even Congleton to Buxton Road are all good, but compared to what Cumbria has to offer they are nothing! And I've spent most of the last 15 years communting between Sheffield and Congleton so know those roads pretty well.

Agree 100% Robin, A54 from Congleton up to the cat n fiddle is a great drive, managed to take all the paint from underneath my front valance the other week on there, the humps in the road about a mile from the sharp left by the pub are too easy to get a little air time if your pressing on...lol! :laugh:

My fave evening blast, A54 from Congleton up to the A537, then the down hill run on the cat and fiddle back into Macc :thumbsup:
