Z4 coupe detailed by Tim @ Envy

While I was away on holiday last week I had booked Tim from Envy to valet my car for me.

I'm ashamed to say that apart form a wash once a week I have neglected my car due to work and family commitments, no excuse's I know!!!!

Anyway I have just grabbed a copy of Tim's post from detailing world. I've got a cd with 30 odd pictures on it that I'll upload tonight when I get home that he provided to give a bit more detail.

I'd just like to add that coming home to nice shiny, polished car is heaven. The downside being that I didn't want to drive it over the weekend as I didn't want it to get dirty! 3 days off b eing run to and from work has taken the sparkle off, but I am now going to make more of an effort to keep it up together and looking loved.

Final detail today from a busy week. Last one I promise for a week. Its half term and I'm going to have a rest!

Looks pretty acceptable but generally lives outside

Wheels washed with AS Smart wheels and EZ detail and trusty Envy brushes

Body foamed with Activo foaming tfr and arches blasted out

Rinsed off, looking better already

AB SSF

Washed with TBM, Z sponge and the usual grit guards. Rinsed and dried.

Clayed with poly clay, the machined with Dodo Juice lime prime lite on the good bits and lime prime/Menz IP on the fly spattered areas that resisted claying!

And buffed

Bit of wet sanding via PC on the rear scratches

Once over with the rotary and MarkV Mystique

Bonnet wearing a coat of Saphir and allowed to cure.

Exhaust cleaned with Autosol and fine wire wool

Interior leather given a wipe with a damp cloth then tested my Zaino Z10 sample

Smells great and looks like this as its absorbed (easily too)

Tyres were dressed, glass cleansed. Plastic washed and protected with Espuma Dasheen.

Here are the afters once the Saphir was buffed off

lol... looks really good clean, heard good things about the dodo juice nice to see the result... Im thinking of getting some of the diamond white stuff. but the bmw does look smart good work.

I have to ask, where does all the soap go? down a drain? Is it bio-degradable?
Ok maybe if your doing your own car but different for a business , I'm sure some clipboard guy from the environment agency would have something to say about the pollution.
I'm not an eco nut just that I have had to spend a lot of money to stop soap etc going down drains on my farm.
In theory at least you should stand the car in a some sort of bunded pool and catch all the soapy water! And dont blame me I didn't make the rules but they are not going to go away.

Not sure I understand the relevance of the question? The guy came out to my house while I was away to do it so there's no difference between the 2 of us, except he machined and wax'd it where as I would have snow foamed, rinsed, washed, rinsed...

The difference is as he is earning money from his valeting business he also earns the right to have to care about what goes down the drain.
Im not criticising anyone, just wondering if anyone knows what the law is about these things? How long is it until some power mad council attempts to prosecute someone for polluting the drains?

Wow - now we're on a political topic huh!
At a guess, I'd say most car shampoo's etc are relatively 'safe', I mean the world didn't come to an end when some bright spark invented fairy liquid (but didn't everyone's hands get soft!), so I'm guessing a shampoo isn't going to cause damage.
Plus - as a mobile valter - what he supposed to do to stop any of his products go down the drain????
God help us if any poiticians read this - another way to tax the motorist.... tax them if they wash their car.... great idea!

For the record - car looks stunning MB - can't wait to see it with the new wheels fitted. Z4's are underated in my opinion - like yours a lot!

Even if he did collect the soapy water residue, what is he supposed to do with it? As far as i'm concerned, if it goes down the drain, the sewage people can deal with soapy water realtively easier compared to some stuff that goes to a sewage plant. Besides, we pay enough council tax etc for the councils to deal with it. God i'm bored.

Do you think the environment agency care about the guy earning a living? There are ways to not let run-off down drains but they are not cheap and not convenient.
If the environment agency gets half a chance it will insist that valaters etc do not pour anything down drains. Then they will move on to people washing their own cars.

Trust me I've been involved in all this stuff. I know its a strange topic, Its just seeing so much soap running off the car in the pics made me wonder what's in the soap and how long it is until some clipboard guy starts sniffing around.
Wash and soap away as much as you want as far as I care, I'm not preaching just commenting.

Oh yes nice shine on the Z4 I have a black car too and know what a PITA they can be.

The car looks good.. most soaps are biodigradable, some of them say so on the bottle too.

Either way.. dont you hate people that have to put a negative spin on something good.

Very true.. Ive got a m8 who works in a government agency and all he does is listen to podcasts all day and play games, and occasionally works.. get gets paid about 8-10 pound an hour to sit around. As the company is government funded they dont care if the money is wasted or spent well. Mr brown is taking the ****!

If you look at a lot of the posts on here, where cars are taken to the detailers premises you will see that the cars are in fact soaped in a bunded pool so all the run off is captured, and then disposed of appropriately.

That's what we have to do, as we work from a fixed site with no mains drainage. The setup cost for our bund and collection tank was around £2k all in, and all of our dirty wash water is now collected and shipped off site for recycling. The costs were absorbed, and we are now regulation proof for the time being. It will be interesting to see how tightening of regs on this issue will affect the mobile side of the industry... and how long it is before the use of such chemicals at home comes under the spotlight. As I understand it, you are not allowed to wash your car with wet chemicals at home in some EU countries already (Germany for example).

I see, In a way its nice to know its not just me that the environment agency is picking on! But a pain in the neck for both of us I guess. But at the end of the day It isnt right to just keep letting all that soap etc run down the drain.

And to correct earlier comments most kerb side drains do not run into the sewerage system and to treatment plants but run more directly into natural water courses.

Am I correct in saying its illegal in Germany to wash your car on a Sunday.. even without soap?

I don't wanna get dragged into this ... but:

I think the point being made was this thread is about the detailing work done on the Z4 - pictures posted for those who appreciate the work to admire it and comment if they wish.

I don't think anyone has said your topic was boring have they? I agree the topic is important and I care about the environment as much as anyone and I'm sure all your concerns are very valid.

Maybe you should start a new thread in this section on the topic where those who wish can comment - and leave this thread to those who wish to comment on the (outstanding) work on the Z4.

No offence meant just hope I can prevent this thread spirally out of control into a slanging match!

To be fair to TrebleSykes to has raised a valid point, ok fair enough he has dragged my thread off-topic. To be honest I hadn't really given the environment much thought when I wash the cars, all that goes through my mind is that I am on a water meter!

Apart from my alloy wheel cleaner my chemicals are bio-degradable.

I guess it wont be that long before the goverment come down on mobile valters but I suppose in the meantime they will ban the use of harsh chemicals?

To bring things back on topic a little does anyone have any tips on preventing water marks after washing? I live in a hard water area so the water marks can be horrendous on my black car if I don't get it dried asap after wetting it
