Hi all, I’ve recently found out that people have put TDi gearboxes in their S3s, I was wondering what are the pros and cons of these conversion, and how much work goes into it.

I'd imagine the gearing is quite high in the TDI boxes. I had a manual MK7 Golf GTD, then a manual MK7 Golf R. The ratios were very different between the 2 cars.

6th gear at 80mph equated to 2200rpm in the GTD and 3100rpm in the R.

Yeah that’s what I thought, but what’s the benefit? Slightly better mpg or what?

I haven't done it, so don't know the exact level of effect, but your mpg will go up, but your power bands in each gear will be in a different place and your 0-62 times will be slower. With such a big difference in ratios, it'll likely feel like you're in a gear higher than you should be. The TDI clutch is hard as nails though, the intended petrol clutch is not - VW put same clutch into Golf GTI and R, and on my Golf R (same car mechanically as the S3, with a few small differences), the clutch used to slip if you put your foot down in 3rd at about 2700rpm on a cold day - stock power, no modifications.

I had diesel final drives in my built 02M box and used 1st and 2nd gear also. Great ratios in my opinion for 0-62mph, from memory I managed 47mph in 1st at 8200rpm and 72mph in 2nd gear at 8200rpm….. bare in mine though I was running 3-6 monster set gear which made the rest of the gearing similar to a stock S3.

The other thing you need to consider is bhp/torque, in a stock S3…… probably would be slower than stock 0-62mph but granted you’d get better mpg in a diesels 6th gear.

I had 642bhp and 516ft lbs in my car when I was running the manual box so that ripped through the gears in no time.
