Recall - issued 02/09/2022

Mines booked in for next Tuesday, if there’s anything wrong surely Audi will be footing the bill.
Just booked mine in after reading this thread. 66 plate S3. What I am intrigued to know is what Audi is saying if this update then flags the fluid pump error on the gearbox, as I'm out of warranty could be in for a big repair bill but because we didn't have this software monitor in place whilst in warranty we'd never know if the issue has been present during that time.

is this not the worry?
They install the new software and the software pings an error saying something is about to break and stops the car.
the software did its job based on the recall/campaign but your car is still broken.
the campaign/recall is for a software update not for faulty hardware.
even if it doesn’t blow up your gearbox the work involved in replacing that shaft is a gearbox out job which will run into thousands at the dealers.

Just copied the following information from a post in VWROC.com

However, he did send me some internal information It generally covers off the campaign, what the tecs do etc. The issue being "a loosening of the bolted connection to the auxiliary hydraulic pump, leading to damage of or failure of the gearbox"
ie
  • DSG update + test drive
  • Check for POC2900 error
  • If error occurs remove gearbox and replace pump. If no error all's good.
  • Also covers charging out internally these works back to VW

Got mine back today and had a good chat with the service guy who knew a lot more than the last one.

Mine had the update and threw no error. He said they had another 2 in for the same thing, had done a few and no errors as yet.

If it fails, due to lead times, he said looking at up to 6 weeks for it to be repaired.

I’m concerned they are just checking if there‘s an error now, but what happens if something fails down the line, will my car throw the warning?

Could this cause sudden loss of power?

Surely they should just be replacing all the pumps?

My car is booked into Audi in around 10 days time for a service, after reading this thread I emailed the service department to ask if my car was subject to this recall and they replied saying there were no outstanding recalls for my car, slightly surprised as it's a '67 plate first registered in January 2018

They record it as a workshop remark on the myaudi app

Car was in yesterday for the check and came back all ok and no faults. Gear changes felt a little smoother but they may have reset all the adaptations and it’s learning again.
Feeling happy that nothing needed doing.

I was talking to a mate about this as hes a vag specialist before semi-retirement and he said the most likely thing that software update can do to save the gearbox blowing up is limit power/torque or reduce power/torque from the engine otherwise there’s no way they can fix a hardware problem with a software patch.
worrying thing for me is the patch reduce power so instead of having 310ps and 400nm we get 280ps and 350nm which isn’t right.
will be interesting to see someone dyno their car after the patch.
I's this true

No, it’s not to prevent the gearbox blowing up its to show if the gearbox has a problem that will cause serious damage.
I ment in regards to lowering the power and torque limiters and bhp to prevent it as per the post

No it’s newer software which incorporates the ability to detect a potentially serious problem inside the gearbox, it does nothing to lower the performance of the gearbox

Typical, my 2018 FL gearbox flew to bits and I spent weeks waiting for Audi UK and the dealer to confirm who was paying etc etc. Its why I ended going to another make/model. But that was a couple of years ago, like I said, typical.

Cars been in for warranty coolant leak today.

When I picked it up they said there’s been a recall issued on Friday for gearbox. Apparently a software update to do with a bolt that may come lose on the gearbox damaging it. Weird that software update can resolve a physical issue but ok…wouldn’t let me take the full info so will try and get it when it goes back to sort it.

It’s a 2017 S3 Saloon.

I just collected my car today after bypass valve and water pump was changed for £1070.00. Have to take it in for g/box recall and it will be in for 4 days. I asked what the recall entailed and Audi Coulsdon, confirmed that it would be gearbox out, to check the bolt that might come loose. Expensively scary. Did not mention software upgrade.

*UPDATE*
Well its been a long road but finally Audi UK admitted my gearbox implosion was exactly due to the recall issues! My box was sent to Germany and they have taken over 2 months to conclude this...I was told they have been checking all logs from my car to see if there was slightest modification as that would invalidate any reimbursement, its now been 2 weeks + and apparently they are just figuring out how they refund me!
As it turns out, i collected my car 12 hours prior to the recall being launched and despite me telling them for months that there was a major issue with these boxes, not one person bothered to listen and look into it ...

Great news.

@gnic13 - great that you got it sorted, despite the time and effort it has taken.

If you or a local has VCDS, could you post the new DSG/S-Tronic software version number per below?

Has anyone plugged in vcds or other diag tools to see what the software version number is after the update?

It seems to have gone a bit quiet on the numbers of owners getting this recall - i wonder if Audi are issuing it in batches so they don't get flooded with customers needing new gearboxes that they can't supply?

Asked my dealer about this a couple of weeks ago and my car isn’t on the list for the campaign. Mine is a late 2018 so maybe they working through it.

Hi from Poland! ;) We have the same problem here and the same conversations on audi fb group. They only call us too.
My S3 8V 2017 stayed at the service yesterday - after uploading the software, the pump error showed up. They explained to me that this software is supposed to increase the oil pressure in the pump, so that it is clear whether the gearbox will not break down.
I made a terrible ruckus when I heard they were going to repair or replace the pump for me. I'd rather they replaced it, because you don't repair "disposable" parts, and we know how cars are produced now.... Once they move something, it will always break down.

I wrote an email to AUDI Poland asking them to explain to me why I can't get details about this recall.
If anyone got an email from Audi UK please share. I will be grateful for anything that will be useful in my fight against them....

Hi. I had a similar experience. They did the update, ran clean, but then after less than 100 miles Amber gearbox warning. I didn't risk driving it, they took it in, and I now need a new gearbox. Apparently gearbox is on long term backorder. Hoping for update on Monday. Mine is 17 plate sport quattro A3. I'm worried that calling it a campaign means they'll bill me.

They just made the update on mine a3 2017, and got a gearbox alert right after the update, and now they are saying the gearbox should be replaced completely.
Seems like they are going to install reconditioned gearbox and not a brand new, without charging me.
Does it make sense? Any risks in using a used gearbox?

I've had an issue with momentarily losing drive between 2nd and 3rd, only happened 3 times in a year and Audi couldn't replicate it, therefore no action taken. Went into a dealer for an MOT in Oct 22 and told DSG required a software update. This didn't work, box came out to investigate, bolt and teeth found in bottom of box (pics seen) so Audi replaced box under recall.

Hi, how much did you wait to get your gearbox replaced? Currently in Europe i think there is no supply until feb 2023.

I have an issue with bolt and teeth broken inside in the gearbox.

Audi initially stated up to 2 months but a new box actually arrived in 3 weeks

Mine is going in for a service, MOT and the gearbox update tomorrow. Hopefully the prevalence of those getting warnings is low. I've only done ~20k miles!

When was this? Mine was in for the service 19.11 now is already almost 3 weeks.

Having done some more miles since my gearbox update this seems to have improved my gearbox operation by some margin. Very noticeable from standstill, where the timing and smoothness of the change from 1st to 2nd has improved. This may not be down to this particular update though, perhaps a previous as I don’t think mines had an update since the car was new.

I had a call from my local dealer about getting my car booked in. Was a bit of a shock as I hadn't heard anything about it. The lady on the phone had no information about the update. Until finding this thread I was clueless. A further phone call to my dealer today and apparently the update cures the problem and I will get a 2 year extended warranty on the gearbox. Only issue I have is the car is modified.
