Help please - S3 8V hunting on idle

Returned to the dealer I got the car from and he claimed it's been taken to 3 garages and none seemed to find a fault.

Sounds like BS to me, and if your issue can clearly be demonstrated that's an unacceptable response. I'd be pushing to take it to a garage of your own choice and get the dealer to foot the bill. This is assuming the car is still under the dealers "warranty".

As at when I took the car to the dealer, the car was out of the dealers warranty by about 2 weeks, I'm not sure there's anything they will do now (months later), I'm just trying to eliminate whatever the problem could be on my own

Oh, blooming typical that is :( Cam magnets and PCV are certainly cheap places to start for rough idle issues. But with the weird knocking noises as well Id be taking it to a garage.

Think I finally have to change the magnets in my 2014 Stage 3 with 77k miles on it

Was over taking a car last night and car just bogged down, EPC light on dash, limp mode activated :(

Got to my destination, turned car off, back on and no light, boost back, car driving as normal.

Scan on OBD11:

1675248103158

No noticeable hunting on idle, car drove perfectly fine 30+ miles this morning - thoughts? All faults above related to the camshaft?

2 off these?

Hello guys, sorry to bring this old thread back up but I’ve been having the same problem so I’ve ordered 2 magnet sensors, just wanted to see if you guys know if these issues are due to the camshaft sensors: engine light has come on, cruise control comes on but turns back off then doesn’t come back on again till I turn engine off?
Thanks for the help in advance!

Just change them as they will go eventually - did mine last week

I would recommend disconnecting top pipe of the coolant tank, lifting coolant tank and moving it out of the way for better access

Have some blue roll or towels under the magnets to catch excess oil

The plugs are a tight squeeze so pry them off - the grey tab just needs lifted upwards to release the clip

The rear one is a bit fiddly due to air con pipe but less than a hour should have them in

Hello guys so I’ve fit fitted in 2 new camshaft position sensors, and the old fault and the feel or misfire has gone but a new code has appeared code: P0726.
Do any of know what be the issue now?

Hello mate, just ordered 2 of them camshaft magnets as my s3 is hunting on idle like you’ve explained, it’s driving with no problems at all, no engine lights have come on, it’s just on idle that it’s hunting the rev counter needle is slighting bouncing up and down every 20 seconds or so, it seems to be using excessive petrol and oil, I replaced the Pcv valve but it didn’t solve the problem, hopefully these camshaft magnets will do the job, I was wondering when you done yours did you need to order new gaskets for the new magnets? or do they even have gaskets? Thanks mate

@S3_63 Any word on how this worked out for you? I'm having the same issue, problem is I had the magnets replaced in May and the issue just returned. Now I'm not sure if I should replace them again or if it might be the oil control valve. Hopefully, not the cam itself...

Not sure yet mate, the 2 magnets have only just arrived this week, booked in to get fitted next week so I’ll let you know how it sounds afterwards, have you replaced the Pcv valve? From what I’ve heard the Pcv valve gives the same sort of problems with the idle if it needs replacing. Cheep and easy to replace so ide give that a go next if I was you mate.

I’ll give it a shot this weekend, thanks!
