My 8V is coming up 3 years old so my Audi Connect/inbuilt SIM subscription ends then. On the MyAudi App it is offering me another 12 months for £115.

My car has a SIM card slot on it as well as the inbuilt SIM, so my plan is to get a data only SIM (found a 12 month/12Gb one for £32.99) instead. I only really use it for online traffic and occasionally sending a destination to the car so don't think I'll burn through data.

Before I do though I just wanted to check that the functionality in the car isn't reliant on having an Audi Connect subscription. Has anyone done it this way?

Send an email to this address and say that you haven't had the chance to use it much due to C-19 and ask if there is any chance of a free update connect.license@audi.de

I did it with this A5 and got 24 months put on it ;)

I don't think anyone is getting any joy with the free extensions now that the charging platform is in place.
I also think you will need to pay the subscription to get the access, having your own sim won't make a difference.
I have a sim in my 2016 RSQ3 and the subscription cost is around £50 for the online traffic access as it only has limited connect features.
Log into your myaudi, online not the app, and you should see the costs in there.

I emailed them and they said I had to buy it online.... Maybe I should reply and see if I can trust their arm a bit.

But the answer is that NO the online traffic will not work.

Honestly though why are you using Audi online traffic? Plug your phone in and use Google maps or Waze.

Because it's built in, works well and means I don't have to plug my phone in, I can just leave it in my pocket.

I’ll probably switch to Waze when my subscription runs out in Sept. Previously I’ve always used Audi’s mapping, I wouldn’t mind paying a few quid a month for it but mines £14.50 and no way is it worth that. I pay £15 a month for my sim only contract on my iphone, how Audi think that sort of cost is comparable for the service they offer is laughable. I think they’ll get a shock with the amount of people that don’t bother with it, if they are expecting a high uptake.

Most of the time I’m driving locally and I know all the alternative routes that I can take if there’s traffic or an accident anyway. It was only handy when I was going up regularly to Newcastle for the football and would suggest different routes if there were accidents on the A1 etc.

Only thing I’d consider on my S5 is the remote services feature which is £4 a month I think, only because that alerts me on the app if the car alarm is triggered which gives me some peace of mind.

Audi navigation is TERRIBLE.

If you start using Waze or Google you will find your journey times decrease substantially (assuming you don't know where your going and using navigation)

As for the not wanting to take phone out the pocket excuse - again your missing out on much better mapping - luckily the new cars all have wireless Android Auto and CarPlay so when you next change you won't have to take it out the pocket!

Is 12gb a year enough? You will be downloading all the satélite imagery every where you go, all the traffic, all other data that is included normally. Not sure 1gb a month is enough but might be wrong? I paid 225chf here in Switzerland for 2years Audi Connect, worth it just for the satélite image mapping, especially if you have VC.

I don't really know how much data I will need, but I have Google Earth turned off so I won't be downloading any satellite data. I did try it and it looks impressive but in terms of clarity of map view I prefer the standard map view. I think it's being removed soon anyway isn't it?

Seem to be conflicting opinions as to whether it will even work with a data SIM anyway. I'll perhaps wait until my subscription expires and then try my phone SIM in it to test the theory.

Very true. That part escaped me! You will need a Audi Connect subscription even if you put your own sim in as you will need to access the data to download it. So really, no point in putting in a sim. If you dont use the satélite images then i really dont think it’s worth it. I went a day without the satélite images and couldn’t use it like that so i paid for it, each to their own though, its all personal preferance.

One thing about using the phone for Nav that I'm never sure of. My car has a GPS aerial on the roof for the OEM nav. If I connect my phone and use Google Maps or Waze, is that using the GPS signal from the phone or the car. If it's the phone, as i think it probably is, isn't the GPS signal much weaker from a phone in the centre console than an aerial on the roof?

I've just had another play with Android Auto as it's been a while since I tried it. It works OK but it's a long way from being fully integrated in my opinion. Firstly you don't get any nav info on the VC screen, neither the map itself or the upcoming turns in the centre of the Speedo as you do with OEM nav. Also if you want to use the OEM media or Radio and flick across to those screens using the MMI buttons, going back to NAV using the button takes you to OEM nav not Android Auto nav. You have to hit menu and then select Android Auto again. It all feels very much like an afterthought rather than a proper integration.

It seems it would work best if you use your phone for everything - Nav, music, radio etc and just leave the MMI screen on Android Auto all the time, but even then you've still got the whole (expensive!) VC screen unused.

I agree that Audi nav routing isn't brilliant (no OEM nav is in my experience) but the integration is way better than Android Auto as it stands and I can't be ***** to plug my phone in and out every time I get in and out of the car for it.

As I said I don't know how you deal with the difficulty of plugging your phone in... if only wasn't so difficult and complicated.

Avoiding those killer sharks and the electric fence before you can plug in the USB is a real stress...

On a serious note you are right about the integration; however that is Audi's choice. AA and CP both support maps in the digital dashboard. Audi just decided not to turn it on.

And talking about your expensive virtual cockpit (which honestly was the least expensive part of my car) you can change sources to radio etc in the VC. Leave the MMI screen in AA and then if you want the radio use the VC controls. Or even easier that shortcut button on your steering wheel for radio if that is an option.

In terms of directions - Google Maps/Waze (which is also Google) are by far the best navigation options; and just remember that the satellite view on the VC is NOT GOOGLE MAPS - it is an overlay of Google Earth onto Audi's maps.

Very funny! But you could make the same argument about many things in modern life - wireless charging, turning on lights by voice, changing TV channels with a remote (not that modern I know!) . The old way wasn't difficult but once you've got used to the easy option you don't want to go back. I've even got a module fitted to automatically turn off the stop-start when I start up the car and that only saves one button press! In any case the USB connector is a weak spot on many phones (I've had one fail on a previous phone) so I always try to minimise use of it.

I take your point about using the VC to change media source, I didn't try that during my test.

When we are allowed to get out and about again, I might give AA a more extended try out, if I can brace myself for the ordeal of plugging in the USB cable!!

I thought I would update this in case anyone else has the same question. I spoke to the Audi Connect team twice about this and they gave me mis-information both times. Firstly, one of them said that provided I had a Data SIM I would be able to use that as an alternative to Audi Connect to get online traffic etc, and another told me that when it came to renew the Audi Connect licence I could chose what parts of it I wanted - ie just online traffic rather than fuel prices and all the other stuff.

The truth is nothing at all online works without an Audi Connect subscription. I have tested this with a working Data only SIM after my subscription expired and you don't even get online traffic, it just reverts to TMC.

Mine was not the first complaint the guy had received about misinformation. They could not provide a free subscription directly as it can only be purchased throught the MyAudi app, but have agreed to refund me the cost of it once I sent them a screenshot of the new licence.

I asked Digital Services if extending Connect would allow future map updates. Verbally they said yes but when I asked them to confirm by email they said map updates could not be extended and were dealer only after initial subscription expires. Connect extension is traffic, fuel prices etc..

That said, they also tried to claim my car was > 3 years old until I corrected them.......

VERY interesting thread.
I have an A5, 67 plate, all kinds of kit inc Tech Pack and Audi Connect and the Google-maps traffic info seemed pretty good. The car has been almost unused for ~15 months ... can't quite remember why now :whistle2: ... and the Audi Connect has expired. The manual is then half of useless about options and there is the infamous SIM slot in the glove box.
Reading here, the general view seems to be...
  • The Audi maps aren't good ... although I found them and the (I believe?) Google traffic overlay good AND integrated. I'd quite like the traffic overlay back
  • The periodic map updates were helpful
  • The SIM slot does nothing? I don't quite understand why it's there if you need Audi Connect to actually get data services to the car? What is the SIM slot for and what services DO you get if you fit a data SIM? The view seems to be you must have Audi Connect?
  • Yes the myAudi app ... and boy, what a game to get the ...ing thing connected, including the dealer having to send me the car number fob which they'd failed to give me at collection of the car new! ... and it says £14.50/month or £141/year ... which given the amount of driving we're all not doing at the moment seems mad
  • There seems no way to hook up the car to home WiFi for map updates etc. although this might be available on newer models??
  • There is talk in the manual about update via USB, but how do you get a suitable USB ... is that something only a dealer might have access to? But then why in the glove box 'taunting' the owner?
It's great the car has all these capabilities, but am I understanding correctly that after the first 3 years it all stops unless you want to pay through the nose and there's a pointless SIM and USB slot which have little point or use?
I can see me reverting to using an iPad for on-the-move traffic info, although that's not so convenient when driving alone

Sim slot allows you to use your own sim from a 3rd party provider for all data connections. So for example you use the mmi as a wifi hotspot which can be used by passengers for their phones or tablets. up to 8 devices can be connected. If you use your own sim then Audi connect uses this for its data connections rather than the eSIM embedded in the car. alternative solution would be to use the mobile hotspot functionality on you phone.

you get free map updates for 3 years - can’t recall if this is from when the vehicle was built or first registered. You can then download map updates onto a USB stick via your My Audi Account using a pc. Done this a couple of times and found it pretty straightforwar. USB can also be used for uploading POI Points of Interest such as speed camera locations so these are displayed on the map screen or for uploading / playing back audio files.

Audi maps are ok but 5here are plenty of other options which are just as good if not better that are free. I use Waze via Apple Car play which I’ve found to be more accurate in terms of estimated journey times + includes speed cameras as well as lots of other real time information for journeys
.

Thanks @Frizzley, this is as I originally expected, but then looking here @GeoffT quite specifically says; "The truth is nothing at all online works without an Audi Connect subscription. I have tested this with a working Data only SIM after my subscription expired and you don't even get online traffic, it just reverts to TMC." That seems to directly contradict what you suggesting that you just pop in 'any old' SIM and it will all hook up and continue?

My car is now 3 and a bit years old (Dec 17) and so outside the 3 year map updates window (prevuously it updated over the air, but of course I'm here as that's gone), however, I thought I'd take a look at myAudi account to see if there was any download to update option. That attempt started off with my password-safe remembered password not working?! Then doing a reset of my 'forgotten' password (as if the password-safe had 'forgotten') and any new password simply generated a 500 internal server error. That's a great service Audi. As a cyber security professional that impresses me hugely ... not!

So is @GeoffT mistaken and some PAYG data SIM will restore everything to perfect working order, or as I fear, it won't restore the access to the Audi services like map updates which requires £141 British pounds for me to use?

my reply related to the functionality of the mmi/usb/sim slots in response to your point that the sim slot did nothing and you did not know why it was there.

The audi connect / infotainment functionality is separate to this. The initial licence is for 3 years after which it is needs to be renewed and for which you have been quoted £141. Typically this covers information on available parking spaces, the latest news and the current weather forecast for the planned navigation destination.

you would need to check if map updates are included (I don’t think they are) but as I said there are better / cheaper / free options avaible

As I understand it, the only use for the SIM card slot is to provide a WiFi Hotspot in the car for other users to connect to. The built in SIM doesn't provide this.

For online traffic, send to car functionality from myAudi app etc etc you need an Audi Connect subscription which then includes data usage for the built in eSIM so to me renders the SIM card slot pretty useless.

Oh okay. So providing a WiFi hotspot in the car is not important ... it's simply swapping one mobile connection for another as my phones/tables have their own mobile connections ... but you also say; "If you use your own sim then Audi connect uses this for its data connections rather than the eSIM embedded in the car. alternative solution would be to use the mobile hotspot functionality on you phone."
So this suggests the SIM slot does act as a substitute for an Audi Connect subscription, plus I can use connect the car via my phone or iPad hotspot, however, having spent a good deal of time looking whether it was possible, my care doesn't seem to have the option of a data connection via another WiFi hotspot. I think later model have this, but in mine, and it was a while ago I went searching for this, the option of connecting the car to another hotspot, say the home, isn't available.
I think too @GeoffT's point was that secondary to the actual data connection, you needed a subscription to Audi Connect to get to the content, e.g. map updates and traffic data. And so that gets me back the point of the SIM slot and USB port.
If these do not let me get to the Audi Connect content, and an Audi Connect subscription gives me both the mobile data and the content, then the SIM and USB seem to have next to no value as anything I could use them for would be covered by the Audi Connect subscription and mobile connection. Am I still misunderstanding?

No, you are not misunderstanding, that's absolutely correct.

Thanks @GeoffT. This was my understanding which is why they seem of strictly limited value. I guess if you have a 'need' to provide access to people in the car to a WiFi hotspot as they have mobile devices without their own mobile connection, there's some value, although in my initial 3 years I was able to connect my phone to the car's hotspot, and the only mobile connection was via the built-in SIM/service.
But the real issue seems to be that for on-map traffic info ... the green/amber/red banding on the roads a la Google ... I need an Audi Connect sub and that provides me both the mobile data and acceess to the data content.
The USB port might offer an option to do an off-air map update, but then I need an Audi Connect sub to get the updates (I'm presuming), and if I have Audi Connect, that maps will update over the air and so render the USB socket pointless.
I have to admit to being pretty unimpressed. I'd have expected to be able to use the inbuilt SIM or my own phone hotspot or even dare I suggest it, the SIM slot, but I'm failing to see any real use for this :frown:

Map updates are only available for the 5 releases after manufacture ie 2.5 years.

I believe extending Audi Connect does not give you additional map updates. Map updates would be additional cost from the dealer unless you go down an unofficial route.

Indeed.

Quite why having used up the original allowance of updates the system reverts to 'dealer only' rather than allowing the website to continue to be used either by including map updates the 'connect' subscription or some other charge is a mystery to me.

Edit - when I renewed my subscription at the end of last year the train/plane times plus twitter functionality was lost as apparently no longer supported

Wow, that's a lot of good, not! Thanks, but really not good news. I see too it says; "Google satellite maps is available from model year 2019". May car was Dec-17 but showed Google satellite imagery, but this is simply a Google Earth overlay to an Audi map as opposed to a Google map?
Still can't quite believe they'd sell something with a 2.5 year lifespan

The overlay is Google or Satellite view on Audi road mapping - never has been Google maps

Agree that the decision for dealer only map updates after 2.5 years is flawed when before that it was downloadable.

Can't really say 'Like' to this, but you know what I mean. Thanks for the (further) disappointing news. All seems pretty poorly thought ut that you purchase this great new service for your car, only for it to to stop being updated before you reach your first MoT

Maybe, but how do you get other maps in the virtual cockpit.

They want us to swipe our cards after 3 years. Or, they’re basing it around people buying on pcp and swapping cars at the 3 yr point.

I recently reluctantly paid £115 to renew. Who in AudiUK did you contact about a refund.

same here. Used my data plan sim 60gb-17€
Nothing happened. Not even updates.

I’ll renew it for a month for 13€ … update Greece , and the balkans nearby I go. And let it expire
Just for using it through VC
