Did your car come with a tracker from the dealer?

I thought I’d share my experience collected the LE last week.

The dealer gave me the keys, and they looked wrong. There were two key fobs on the end of the keys. I assumed they were something belonging to the dealer so I told the salesperson and he said they were mine now.

It turns out Southend Audi fitted a Vodafone S5 tracker to the car! And the key fobs tell the tracker if the keys are stolen or have been cloned.

I called Vodafone who said the system was installed in February but never activated… I do wonder if the person at Vodafone got that right as it seems weird the dealer would spend money to fit a tracker they don’t use!

But what that does mean is once I get the V5 I can use this tracker myself (with the year subscription).

Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi,
yes I found similar tracker installed by dealer when i bought my 8v.. Subscriptions not cheap but they are bullerproof devices.. Just one word of advice, find out where its installed for when you want to sell on as the hardwear is costly to replace..

Just ask your local car thief where it is installed, they stole my sons Golf R two weeks ago, the tracker company said the tracker was removed 7 minutes after the car started to move off the path

I think the new car is over-tracked! We have the built-in location. I have an apple AirTag - which is so small no one will notice it. I have the tracker I had on my old car. And if I use the S5 then that’s another one…

Ghost though and the car is going no where. Is there even a single instance of a car nicked after ghost is installed?

TX.

Your Airtag is useless as a tracker. When in the presense of another iPhone for a sustained period of time it warns the owner of the other iPhone that an airtag is following them. It will also start making noises. - Given how popular iphones are I would say there's a very very high chance of the thiefs having one.

^ As said Apple air tags are useless as your phone will tell you theres one in the near vicinity, as are trackers against OCG car theives, they either use an RF detector or just park them up for a couple of days on false plates and see if they get 'recovered' if not they then put them to whatever use they stole them for

Look into it, Audi fit Vodaphone trackers, they only use the Vodaphone network, some others use any Network

You are right about the AirTag - really it is there as a way for me to find my car and not as a tracker.

BUT it won’t show up right away on a thieves iPhone. There is still a good chance that they will not notice it for enough time for it to be useful.

I wonder how long before somebody else's Airtag starts showing on your phone?

I did read that car theives were using them when they spot a desireable car parked somewhere, they just pop one on the car instead of following you home

They would then run the risk of it being detected by an owner with an Apple device though, same as using one as a tracker.

There's not an awfull lot of definitive answers out there to the question 'how long before your phone alerts you of an air tag'
An apple answer says 24 hours but we are working to get it shorter, another answer says 'at least ten minutes'

These are a good product.

I buried one in my 8V.

They nicked my a45 a few years back with a rewire tracker installed… they ripped out the covers for all the ‘usual’ places to find a tracker but had no luck as I installed it myself in the depths of the cabin. Rewire tracker located the car within half hour but took three days to get out if the police compound… Regardless, i love those cheap trackers but on occasion the app would not pickup my vehicle for a while…

The vodafone trackers are also NOT mounted in the usual places as my Audi dealer couldnt locate it and referred me back to the original dealer where I purchased the 8y from…

The vodafone tracker never skipped a beat when locating or detailing my cars journeys…

Cost difference considering I would go fir the vodafone seeing as you have the unit installed already and only require subscription.. otherwise id go for rewire..

Just my oppinion here… good luck..
