Real World Mpg of A3 8Y

I do the same 340 mile round trip most weekends. Pretty well all motorway. 65 - 70 on the way up ( traffic ) and 70 on the way back. Cruise control whenever safe to. Oddly - some days I average 36 mpg for the trip other days 45. For the life of me I cannot explain the difference.
is that a S3 you got or 40Tfsi/E? Or 35Tfsi?

Proof that an s3 is relatively economical!!
215 journey from Hull to Maidstone.

Any non diesels come close? Trip to Scotland and back no doubt helped bring the mpg up to 50. Since getting the car in end July journies have ranged from 35 to 65 mpg

For the first 70 miles of my trip a few weeks ago i managed to get 61.4 MPG out of my 35 tfsi. But then Anglesey country lane happened and I have have put in in dynamic by the time id finished the 100 miles journey the average was at 54 mpg

54mpg is still very decent on a 35TFSI, I did miss the 40ish more bhp on single country lanes overtaking (previous car was a 1.5T Volvo V40 with 152bhp) loong lorries / car transporters / fuel trucks. Saying that the new 1.5 ACT EVOs are still no match for previous 1.4 ACT TSIs for mpg. Those it was 'normal' to get anywhere from low to high 60s mpg on all 50-70mph journies!

On a separate note anyone noticed E10 Ron 95 giving noticeable poorer economy / engine performance at all?

I haven't noticed decrease in performance but drop in MPG is very much noticeable. Once this fuel crisis thing blows away, I plan to start running it on E5 99RON again.

Oh yes, I just noticed this yesterday (at least from the mpg readout). Usually my Tue evening journies always gave me low 40s mpg there and mid 40s mpg back. Yesterday, it was high 30s mpg there and low 40s mpg back. So I would say 2-3 mpg poorer, which is def more than the 1% that's stated.

I’m doing 27.8!!!!
And that’s in a 30tfsi (1.0L petrol)

I do open the taps from time to time but that’s ridiculous!
I’ve had issues with this car, it wouldn’t start properly after having it for 4 days.
It was off the road for a month whiles they scratched they’re heads looking for the fault and then put it down to a software issues but said the update is not out yet and will call me in when it’s ready.
Is it worth letting the dealer know that I’m not getting a good mpg? Could this be down to faulty software?

That's pretty bad for a 1.0TSI, if it was an S3, I would say, not bad...I guess it's a perfect storm of low city speeds, brand new engine, E10 fuel, and possibly no MHEV (assuming yours is manual?). The worst I've seen on mine is mid 30s, which is literally start, move a few meters, lift off (engine goes off) and it rolls to a stop few meters ahead. I've seen average mpg drop from by 5mpg in a space of 50 odd meters of start stop traffic.

If the car has only be driven in city (20-30mph), you have changed gear between the 2-2.5k mark, been generally gentle with the throttle, then I do not really see anything wrong with such low mpg. However, what 'short term' mpg do/would you get when you go at a constant 40-50mph on free flowing roads for 10-15 mins? You should easily get 45-55mpg.

Averaged 59.3mpg from my home (Forfar) to Lake District and 57.4mpg on return journey June/July.
On daily commute (21 miles each way) its between 45-50 depending on traffic.

My figures have dropped a little bit lately but I put that down to having the lights on, heated rear screen and climate/heater on etc on during the morning commute. I suppose it could have been something to do with the fuel but my wifes diesel is similar (small drop in economy) so not sure if I'm honest.

Man i have the same car and I am averaging 42 mpg in 14k miles. Definitely something wrong with your car I think. I floor it regularly and I never come close that consumption.

Joys of E5 petrol! :) I was 'expecting' these sort of figures of mid to high 50s on my trip to Scotland, but it was on E10 (and had 4 adults inc me plus luggage), so had to do with low 50s. Unless you were using 97-99RON?

Hi, it’s not an MHEV and it’s a manual.

I previously had a golf with a 1.0 tsi and used to get around 40/45mpg long term. I work shifts so I drive to work really early in the morning and can open the taps abit.
It is 6 mile round tip and mostly county roads.

I only posted on this thread because since I’ve had the Audi I’ve had to fill up more often than the golf despite it having the same engine size.

Since I’ve posted on this thread I’ve been driving more economically I’ve driven 100 miles in lane 1 and the “long term” mpg now says 30mpg.
I did what you said about driving 10-15mins on a free flowing road at 40/50mph in 6th gear and the “short term” only got up to 35mpg.

I’ve had loads of issues with this car. I love the style but the faults are doing my head in.

should I ask the dealer to take a look at the car because of the consumption? Or are they going to tell me to stop flooring it even though I’m driving economically?

Tyres all the correct pressures? From my exprience at 40-50 mph, the mpg bar would be just slighter higher than 40 (shame we can't see the exact numeric instataneous mpg), especially when put on cruise control and in the highest gear. Other than that, I'm baffled, why so poor mpg. I mean I went from London to Scotland, 4 ppl plus luggage going at 72ish mph mostly, and it still returned over 50s mpg on a 'newish' engine. And on highway there isn't much MHEV engine off and coasting efficiencies to be gained! Not sure what the others think, but even if u reset the short term and still only get 35 after doing a steady driving at 40-50mph, something might be up...even some S3s get better mpg!

Nope just the normal el cheapo unleaded.

35TFSI manual, over the first 1400 miles I have got 41mpg lifetime running E10. Daily commute ranges from 40-43 on average in auto engine mode.

One thing I did notice on a rather mundane drive, when on the consumption display and coasting, if I was in a high gear it has full bar, but does not turn the whole bar green, just the tip - when in a lower gear, it engages two cylinder mode, and the whole bar goes green - but higher revs. So the million dollar question -

Is it more economical to be in two cylinder mode at higher revs or higher gear at lower revs but with all four cylinders working?

I appreciate this may be a completely pointless question, but seeing that the engine did things I feel are counter intuitive got me thinking....

My understanding of the instantaneous mpg meter is that the longer the bar is (regardless of colour) the more economical the car is being.

If i'm not mistaken, the manuals only have the grey bar that goes 10, 20, 30, 40, max. And yes the longer the bar towards the max, the more economical. In the MHEVs there is also a green bar that is normally simultaneously 'fills' with the long bar plus regenerative braking (half green battery bar), or if you hit the brakes, would be full green bar.

Same as you, I have the 30TFSI but I have MHEV and Automatic but i'm only getting MPG in the 20's as well... and I haven't once floored it yet as the car is brand new.

Scrap that, I was looking at short term memory, long term is 40mpg :tearsofjoy:

Definitely higher revs in 2 cylinder mode! Rough maths from experience is that if you basically force it into 2 cylinder mode by not putting to much strain that it needs the torque and above the 1750 rpm to trigger 2 cylinder you'll get about 10 mpg more.

In S mode I frequently get half green bar, whereas in D mode half bar is always grey.
Does it mean I get better MPG driving in S instead of D? This seems very counter-intuitive because D shifts to higher gear lot earlier than in S mode. Hence should be more economical.

I get more than that from my M235i GC in urban conditions, but then I also drive a 1.0l fiesta over the same journey and obtain an average of 41mpg...

Done 1470 miles in it since end of April. Not looking good for my 5000 mile pcp deal
Bro I know what you mean :D i did 9k out of 12k mile pcp deal and i got the car last december
I might be in the same boat 'soon ish' as I only have 5k a year and, well it's already around 2.4k now (after 3 months!). Did you guys call/ammend your PCP/lease after a certain period of time to try and enquire on upping the mileage moving forward, or you would just take the excess mileage charge, which mine is I think...9p/mile or something like that.

I'm pretty much on track with miles (12k/year for 2 year contract, at 8900 miles at 9th month). My excess mileage is 18p/mile.
As pretty much all manufacturers are having issues with their production and deliveries are all messed up, I might not get a new car at end of the current one. Wondering how easy/difficult to extend the contract by another year.

On my lease contract, the 'informal' extension up to 12 months, would be at a cost of ~ £40 more per month. However it is stipulated that it may be possible to work something out if you contact them 'latest' 6 months before the end.
I know Seat (with VW finance) do these extensions, and in some cases, the monthlies were even lower than the intial ones, but on my Volvo V40 previously (on Santander finance) it was as a dead no way, you would have to take only the informal extension of up to 6 months which was also at £40 ish more a month.

Like you, I already have this in the back of my mind...extending at the end of my 2 years...and luckily besides the SOS ping and Sat Nav after 2 months or so forgetting my last destinations, everything works fine (for now).

So here on the other spectrum, a chocker block bumper to bumper (well 75% of the journey it was def that rush hour traffic) from my place to south London via Rotherhide Tunnel, and return via Blackwall Tunnel (surprising no SOS ping this time round). 5-8 degrees and E10 petrol...mid 30s!

This is my long term average since I've had it. 42MPG across 9666 miles. Not too shabby also nothing to write home about.

Has anyone noticed really poor MPG during this cold season?
I've been using 95RON E10 (Tesco/Morrisons) petrols and getting noticeably reduced mileage in last couple of months.

Is it just cold weather or E10 fuel is even crappier in cold?

Maybe supermarket fuel? Did a few shortish city journies when it was 3-5 degrees recently, medium traffic I would say, still did around the 40mpg mark. Didn't have any noticeable drop, although saying that, my fuel is half E10 Texaco, and E5 R99 Momentum in the tank, argh, ok, let me refuel with E10 and see when I do.

wow some impressive numbers there, im only getting mid 40's and im in individual with eco drive and comfort steering, 35 tfsi auto, and im driving like a fanny

If you feel mid 40s is rough, I'm pretty much pegged at low to mid 30s with a mix of town/motorway driving with my 35TFSI manual and I wouldn't say I've got a lead right foot either.

Over the weekend drove to Peak district and back, M1 and then some nice twisty roads in Hope valley. It was very cold (5ish degree c), misty and road surface was damp and slippery.
About 280 miles of total journey and MPG readout was 46MPG.
