Hi folks,

Looking at getting a 3.0tdi as a runaround. Came across two on Autotrader; one is a manual and the other auto and both are 2006.

For those who have them, can I ask that apart from personal preference which one is better, i.e. manual or auto. How is the gearbox like on auto and what are the common issues. Also, if I was to go for either, what I should be asking as a proof.

Would appreciate some help / pointers.

Thanks.

If you get an auto make sure you service the 'box.
I didn't know it was a thing and wrecked the 'box on my old 2.5.
I loved it, autos make for relaxed driving, especially when coupled to a quattro.
But you pay a premium in fuel prices, and I wouldn't really say they're a runaround, most a long distance cruiser.

Was told by Audi that the auto box on my 3.0tdi Quattro that the auto box is sealed for life .Mine has full history but as Audi say sealed for life it’s never been done.Spoke with an independent auto box specialist that it should be every 40k
They did a sample test and advised to leave alone if not experiencing issues as draining and refilling can lead to creating issues through dislodged particles
Love mine ..as pie says very relaxed and a good bit of power and torque when needed
Took it to Manchester and back at weekend approx 180mile round trip and averaged about 45-50mpg using less than half a tank
It does have a eco map on though

Thanks buddy. Runaround meant more of a work commuter car. Doing nearly 150 miles per day for 3-4 days per week. Had a e90 330d and the timing chain on it snapped last week. Bought it couple of years ago as a commuter car

Currently doing same miles on the S4 and my wallet isn’t liking it at all .

is it motorway cruising commute or more urban , fuel consumption may still be an issue depending on which it is.

80% motorway cruising commute Rob and 20% local, like school pickups and other stuff when working from home.

Any specific reason for looking at a 3.0tdi?
Would a nice 2.0tdi be worth a look at?

Personally, I wanted an auto mainly due to a) being lazy as well as due to couple of patches where it can be busy in the morning with start stop traffic (HS2 roadworks).

The CVTs in 2.0tdis as well as multitronics in B8s are a bit slushy and a ticking time bomb, which kind of limits my options.

Having said that, it might be that I have to start considering manuals too as it increases my options.

Makes sense chap, allways good to cover all bases.
Personally, i prefer manuals over auto's, agreed autos are ideal in slow / stationary traffic etc but I just don't like them, maybe due to having some in the past that were just problematic.
