Q7 Time to upgrade, Q7 or an A7 (2017 onwards)

Well the time has come, it's now been 3 years since we purchased the Q5, we have our eyes on either a Q7 or A7, she prefers the Q and I prefer the A

She loves the feel of being high up in the Q5 and feels that type of built car would be more beneficial if ever in a crash (god for bid)
I love the A7 because of the shape and how quick the S-Tronic cars can be

So we are both in a dilemma which to go for, but will be going car shopping next week, although looking on the Audi website the Q7's do have a lot of mileage for the ages

Anyone been in same predicament, I think this is going to be difficult persuading her....

We go camping a lot so would need a good size boot.

I suppose part of it is what you do with the car...
I went from A7 to an SQ5. Loved the A7, Loved the SQ5 but two very different cars.
The biggest thing about now going to an A is the height and boot. For me, I now have to carry a bulky pram which meant the A7 was out hence the change...Boot was long but not high enough with the sloping back meaning I had to remove the wheels to allow the lid to shut. Also the sloping line meant not enough luggage space when it came to height.

On the topic of height, dropping back to the ground was just not a feeling I liked.

Onto the Q3...we have one of those (wifes car) and the biggest issue...once again, boot space! It's a nice height from the ground but we've struggled getting the "baby" stuff into the boot meaning then its towels on seats, stuff on towels and the seat is lost for a passenger.
Otherwise, the Q3 range is a cracking car....we do have the older model and one thing to note is while its a 2.0 tfsi, the acc pedal is strange feeling in that it jerks the car everytime you take off unless you are gentle with it....unlike the A7 and SQ5 where you just plant the pedal down.

I've had plenty of new and old shape Q7s as loaners - the height is great and if you get a decent one, plenty of toys. But I did find a few issues with it - namely just moving around smaller towns/country lanes and parking! It's a beast.

I sold my SQ5 last week and was looking at 3 models - another SQ5, a Q5e (too slow now compared to the SQ5), or the Q7e but this ended up being too much.
I pick up an e-tron 55 next week which sits between the Q5 and Q7.

So thats my take on it...if the loss of being higher up is not an issue....and the loss of the boot in comparison to your Q5...the A7 will work.
Oh, taller passengers in the back do feel a little cramped too - again because of sloping lines.

If you want height, big boot, maybe an additional 2 seats...Q7

Also running costs is something else you may want to consider? I went through a lot of rubber on the low-profile 21s....compare that to the maybe fatter 20s...?

I'm waffling now (mainly because I am on a call at the moment) so I'll stop

@aj84 - Good points, and it would be great to have the Q7 for the size, but as you said parking is difficult due to it being a beast

Been looking at a few Q7’s and A7’s since I last spoke on here, and I have a quick question regarding somethijg we noticed when driving an audi courtesy car

The car would brake suddenly if it thought you were getting too close to another car, can you turn this off?

Also when driving down the motorway, if perhaps you steered off the lane to the right the steering wheel would turn back left, can you turn this off?

Basically all the sense things, if you don’t like them, can you turn them off permanently and they don’t switch back on when the key is turned off and on

But its going to the dealership again on Monday, as the windows are still shaking / vibrating,

I've read on a few places this could the window regulator.

Funny enough had just seen this thread and was reading through thinking what about an SQ5, but you best me to it . On the pedestrian alerts (sudden braking) and the lane assist (steering) you can turn them off or at least turn the sensitivity right down

Yes I read you can turn them completely off, but switch back on after you turn the key on again

If you set Audi Assist Pedestrian Assist warning to 'Late' you'll avoid 99% of the sudden braking events and TBH when it does happen there is a justifiable reason.

As cosmicblue says, you can turn the sensitivity right down. I was pretty sure you could turn off lane assist but not the other, maybe things have changed

I'm working Offshore just now so the car is sitting at home with wife, so just wondering if anyone could answer the below

When travelling up to a roundabout or junction, and your slowing down, then you realise you have enough time to put the foot on the gas to keep going successfully, do the SQ5's still have the lag which takes about a second to kick in? I had major lag with my Q5 190PS and I was basically screaming at the car to MOVE at a roundabout haha. I did read somewhere the SQ5's are now built with some equipment to reduce the lag, and its hardly noticeable now if anything?

I watched a video on this lag last year when I had the Q5 when I though it was terrible, and what I learnt was the car is basically coming down the gears, but when you stick the foot down to access power, the car is still thinking about going down the gears which is where the delay lag comes from. maybe someone can correct me if that's wrong?

Mine is exactly like this. Lift off, slow down for roundabout or junction or traffic lights, then put foot down to get out and its like it needs to think about selecting a gear, build boost, drop clutch then go. Its infuriating and pretty much the only thing about the car I really dislike.

The equipment to reduce lag is meant to be an electric supercharger/compressor to spin up the turbo. I've not noticed any difference.

I also find the throttle pedal has nothing doing in the top 1/4-1/2" of movement, then wham! everything. It was one of the things I was going to ask about at the delaer when it finally goes for service or recall work. There is a thread in the A6 forum about 3.0 V6 owners with similar symptoms who have had a software update for the gearbox which has improved things. I think it is programmed this way for emmissions. Manual gearbox mode makes it better slightly, but nothing else Ive changed seems to do any different - sport gearbox, drive select modes etc.

That's right mate, it was a compressor I was reading about, but you've not seen any difference

Maybe I should ask Audi about this software update, maybe they don't offer it until the customer asks.

Any idea when the update was released, and any details on firmware number?

I’m not even sure the update is valid for Q5, it was in the A6 forum but the symptoms sound very similar. I’ll try and find it and put a link in.

What's strange is I also had an A7 66 Plate, 3.0, but it was an S-Tronic (dual)

And not once did I ever feel any turbo lag.

Could it be because these motors have a Tip Tronic gear box, (think I know the answer > single)

I’ve come form an Alfa Romeo 2.2D Stelvio which has the same ZF gearbox, but likely different software implementation and no lag there either.

Has anyone noticed when you turn off the SQ5 engine you hear 3 faint beeps, which happens every time you turn it off

My other half is wondering what this noise is and it’s doing her head in

Haven’t noticed beeps, but it does a variety of whirs and gurgles when stopped from diesel tank and air reservoir(air suspension). Can only here them from outside the car though, can’t hear anything in the cabin.

My previous Alfa Stelvio and Lexus Is300h used to whistle/high pitched continuous beep when stopped. Was the AbS manifold and/hybrid system I think.

Fully agree, we should have to be buying 3rd party accessories to have a 'normal' driving experience

Is there anyway for me to check the Engine ECU and gearbox Firmware versions?

I have just been advised though that our local Audi do a AILSA to check for outstanding recalls or campaigns

Even if it's just in for a window wiper change.

We also had the car in for the windows vibrating/shaking after the test drive, before we took ownership

So the windows are now fixed apparently, but now whatever they did to stop the windows vibrating, there is now a damn shaking rattling noise coming from inside the door. And get this, the Tech working on the car said the door sills were dried up so greased them

They LOVE this magic grease don’t they

Honestly! What next…

Car is booked in once again as the Senior Tech replied back it is the Servo, apparently it’s very labour intensive job.

Was out last night and has anyone felt like the SQ5 on 20” alloys in comfort mode is still more bumpier than a Q5 with 21” alloys in Auto. Feels like you can feel every single bump, going to check the tyre pressures today.

Also going to have them check the callipers, pads and discs when it’s in. When braking I’m hearing a rubbing noise like a pad or disc is worn or something. When I was out yesterday, as I broke also had a squeal but went away after a couple pushes of the pedal.

What tyres is it running, as different brands can have different sidewall constructions affecting bump absorption and stiffness . I’d assume it should still have the original OE tyres given its age?? My 21’s seem great on ride quality on Pirelli’s but I do have Air suspension. Noticeable difference comfort to sport.
Brakes could be glazed from light use, maybe need some hard stops to deglaze them and get back to normal?
