My mate has just been in the car with me, when I pulled up and stopped he said "You're doing that wrong" :wtf:

I had done the following:
1: Foot on brake
2: Pushed P on the gear lever
3: Pulled the park button up
4: Foot off brake and pushed engine off

He said it should be:
1: Foot on brake
2: Pull the park button up
3: Push P on the gear lever
4: Foot off brake and engine off

Obviously we both thought we were right, so we looked in the book and it turns out he was right!!! :pensive:

So how do you do it and does it make any difference in general, or does it add to wear and tear on the gearbox doing the gear lever P first? I know on the old style Auto's they used to say in P it puts weight on the gearbox pin or something like that!?!?

1: Foot on brake
2: Pull the handbrake button up
3: if on anything other than flat ground: Foot off brake pedal - especially if on incline/decline as you’ll notice the car ‘slump’ an inch or two. If on a significant slope I do this in N.
4: press brake pedal and Push to P on the gear lever
5: Foot off brake and engine off

The parking pawl isn’t that strong, and that slump will wear it in time if you go straight to P.

I have Hold Assist but don’t think that makes a difference in this scenario.

Yeah forgot to say I have hold assist as well. Plus mine is slightly different, I just push p on the lever, the lever doesn't move position.

I do it the same way as you do.

1. Foot on brake
2. Press P button on gear lever
3. Active EPB
4. Foot off brake and engine off

We live on a hill and I'll sheepishly admit to the following "technique":

1. Foot on brake
2. Select P via gear lever
3. Turn off engine

By some voodoo magic (Hold Assist?), the EPB engages at some point without me thinking about it.

@Adam14 - I'd be interested in your comparison notes on the S3 -v- S5. I spent an entertaining 25 minutes on the M4 with a 2018 S5 yesterday, which was being piloted in a discerning way. We were joined by a 2014 RS5 for c.10 minutes as well. Sadly there was a lot of traffic between the fun and we were very responsible anyway.

I do
Come to stop
Put car in P
Put EBP on
Ignition off
On an 8P dsg model if you put the handbrake on before putting it into P it would roll forward slightly and put strain on the handbrake, felt like the car was stretching.

Two very different beasts. I initially regretted the change in the first few months but glad I changed now.

As a quick comparison the S3 was a very quick and fun car, albeit it attracted a lot of attention from “boy racers” (yes I know I’m young, but even so it gets annoying).

S5 much better GT, still extremely quick but very comfortable and surprisingly economical.

Thought of selling the S5 a few months back with prices being strong but not a clue what I’d get. IMO anything that would be an upgrade/worthwhile would be a lot more money a month (RS5, C63, Porsche 718 Cayman etc etc) so for now I’m sticking with it as it’s hard to beat, does a lot of things wel

For the 8P that was putting the strain on the parking pawl buried in the gearbox instead - more expensive to fix that vs rear brakes.

So which is the actual correct procedure for an 8V? Is it Parking Brake on, then shift to P or shift to P first, then pull up the parking brake?

I miss the auto hold button I had before, but even that doesn't engage the EPB either.

lol good to see I'm not the only one that has to think about this!!! :D
