Hi, I may be buying a SQ5 for the wife and I would be buying a pre 2016 Adblue model.
It seems some people have had issues with the pre 2016 panaramic roofs with rattles and creaks and Audi updated the roof frame around 2016.

Is this a common issues as I don't really like rattles and creaks on cars?

Stafford Audi sorted my 2016 SQ5 and no creaks since serviced in March. Ok, so it took 2-attempts, the second one a tad embarassing for them but obviously free for me; nevertheless 100% sorted. Our panoroof is in regular use and we wouldn't be without it now...

Thanks for your reply, when you say Stafford Audi sorted yours did they actually strip out the complete roof and change the frame or just give it a clean and re-grease?.

I am a maintenance engineer so I am more than happy to clean and re-grease the roof runners and mechanisms but I don't want to be changing a roof frame after paying 20k plus on a car.

Just a clean and 'paste' Martin using two tubes of AG060751A2 paste.

Stafford Audi Service also said there was an 'update' on the roof but not sure what that was, maybe just the paste (mine's a Jan 2016 German build SQ5) and s with our RS3 there were/are numerous 'updates' that were not usually told about. :sadlike:

I do have Technical Service Bulletin 2022733/2 and 2038029/1 and other information:

Tech service bulletin 1 Creaking panoroof 7 Creaking panoroof 9

So PM me with you email address and I'll send (13-docs) it all to you - I had intended, as you, to do it myself but as Stafford Audi kindly offered well it seemed rude not to let them develop their skills using my car: and that was in March this year and nothing since.

I tried to do a PM but could only find the start a conversation link so tried that.

That'll do fine, Martin, I have that: I'll be sending stuff and communicating throughout the day... :hi:

Our Q5 Sline (non SQ) was registered December 2016 and creaks like crazy just now

We had it in after we got it and Audi did a ‘Sunroof service’ under warranty would you believe, I’ve never heard of such a thing

anyway they did all this and the noise went for just under a year, then it came back

They checked and apparently the report stated they ‘stuck felt along the T-bar”

This has done absolute nothing at all and the creaks are still happening and it’s like the noise is just getting worse, it’s more noticeable when going over bumps and turning.

it’s booked in for to be fixed again in 2 weeks and I’ll be telling them straight, I’m not travelling up to Audi every year to have this fixed and want it fully sorted now...

Not sure where you are but if "close" to Stafford Audi then I can sure recommend them, mine remains 'silent' - albeit only since April - and is tilted, opened and closed a lot...

The previous version of Q5 was notorious for creaky pano roof issues (was well documented on the MyaudiQ5 forum) and was the reason neither of my two SQ5s were spec'd with that option. To be fair some owners experienced zero problems and others never seem to be able to resolve the issues.

Is mine in that "previous version of Q5," cosmicblue, an early (Jan/Feb) 2016 German build, or "after." The slight but annoying creaks I had at used-purchase, 3-years old, have now been successfully resolved and hopefully will stay that way.

And now on 20" winter rubber with a much softer ride than the 21" summers - now waiting a thick coating of the white stuff to give a 'proper' evaluation, lol.

SQ5 summer winter tyres

Maybe these '20-inch winters' will 'assist' the onset of the dreaded panoroof creak/rattle too...

Could you send me the "pano roof" stuff please John.
I have a slight rattle on the passenger side, about half way down, from time to time and would like to investigate the issue.
My last 2 cars (both S3's) had pano roofs, which I removed the headliners from both to fit the roof rails and never had any issues with rattling of any kind. Would be the first thing I would spec on any car for me

Hi bud, thanks

No we are East Coast Scotland, so Dundee or Aberdeen would be the closest :(

Thought I had a pano roof issue on my 2015 SQ5. The rattle was intermittent and I convinced myself I was heading for a roof mod or regrease etc (mega bucks as out of warranty) until I read a thread on another forum about the warning triangle in the tailgate rattling around. Took mine out and repacked it with a piece of rag for padding and bingo, rattle gone!

My 2016 Q5 had an annoying rattle, Doncaster Audi sorted that by cleaning and lubricating but shortly afterwards I sold it and bought a SQ5. Today I took it it Lincoln Audi for the same problem but they wouldn’t investigate it until the Panoroof service £196.63 and Panoroof water drainage check £75.00 had been done. Typical Audi, they’ve known about this problem so they cash in on it. Needless to say they didn’t get my money.

Hi guys,

Just to update you all on here, the Sunroof was removed and a new seal was placed on

So far so good, the creaking has disappeared, looks like it was this all along

I had a rattle/squeak on mine, drove me mad for a month.
It was the seal that runs across the roof that the back of the opener sits down onto, it felt grimly to touch. I gave it a good clean and its now noise free again!

*UPDATE*

The Creaking noise has returned, after only a month :(

When the car was in last, this is what they carried out (see attached), we honestly though this had been sorted

The car has now been booked back in for March and will see what happens, I have suggested for the Frame to be replaced which will be done.

It's strange how when the Sun Roof is opened upwards slightly, the noise completely goes, but lower it back down and it starts again

If you look at this video below, this is exactly the same noise as we had, then it got fixed and now its starting again (but not as bad just now)

Car is again booked in for the 23rd of March

I have been advised by the Tech Manager the Sunroof Frame will be replaced at a cost of £2000+

They had to eliminate all the previous all the previous fixes/items before they went ahead and asked Audi to replace a high cost item

I have no idea if the Frame is replaced only, or everything is replaced including the 2 pano windows? Anyone know what all gets replaced?

Will update this forum when I get the car back, but I have been advised the noise will be removed... (we will see)

That's a shocker

I know mine doesnt do it if I put it to tilt open donuts not rubbing together so I'm going to get some cryotox

Bringing this old thread back from the dead

I went out in our Q5 again last week and had my other half drive the car along the back roads, so I could sit in the back release my seatbelt and pin my ear to where the creaking was coming from. The points where I heard direct creaking was on the actual centre bar (which splits both windows), sound coming from the sides closest to the sides of the car.

Have contacted Audi yet again, and the car is booked into Aberdeen on Monday.... this is just a ****** nightmare! I wish we had chosen a car without a Pano Sunroof.

Thats where I had the rattle from, I just gave the rubbers along the middle a good clean, a quick wipe over with gummi pflege and job done. Never came back

Just to prove what is still driving us nuts, this was recorded last week:

Hi Bud,

If you don't mind me asking, which rubbers are you talking about? Would like to try get this sorted once and for all...

Where the rear of the opening sits back down onto the rubber seal. It had a build up of grime on it.

Just had a check and ran my finger along the rubber, I presume this is where the jagged (teeth) rubber part from the Window sits into?

It's clean as can be, probably because a new sunroof was fitted just last year.

Just to add, the creaking came back a few months after the brand new sunroof was fitted, we just couldn't get to Audi due to Covid.

Yes thats right, mine looked clean but just felt grimey when I ran my finger over it.
Sounds like a different issue then to me.
I'm on my 4th panroof audi in a row now and the slight rattle/squeek on my SQ5 has been the only issue so far.

NO WAY !!

Audi have replaced your Pano Sun Roof 4 times already due to the same issues?

I'm just complelty sick of it to be honest, we paid good money for this car, but hearing a creak now and again just enfuriates me

It also doesn't happen all the time which is odd, whther this has something to do with heat or coldness I don't know :(

This creaking noise has been with us since we purchased the car from Audi in Aberdeen, I'm just glad they have it on record from when we bought it.

Haha lol...no you read it wrong (or I misinterpreted it) what I meant was my 4th car in a row with a panroof and the only issue I've had is a squeaky seal on the SQ5 that I sorted myself.

Unfortunatly, this was my first and last car which will have a Pano Sun Roof.

It's just terrible, the creaking just does your absolute box in :(

However, I have ordered the Gummi and will see if I can give it a quick clean

UPDATE:
Well.... had the Q5 once again into the Workshop and they have performed miracles, they re-aligned both the front and rear sunroof window and did a few other tech things, the sunroof is now completely silent. It also helped them by sending in Videos and pointing to the area.
Audi then Diagnosed the area, spent whole day apparently
Rubbed down the Trims inside,
Checked the position of the Frame on the sunroof, making sure everything was central and re-tightened everything
The glass was then all realigned (front and rear)
Made sure the gaps were correct (as per ElsaWin instructions) between the front and rear glass

I hope this is the complete end, will give it a few months and report back....but so far so good! :)

Hi. I have an Audi A4 Avant with a creaking panoramic sunroof. It is very irritatating, so far I have been unable to track down exactly where the creak comes from. I have lubricated everything with Gummi Pfledge, tightenened everything, wedged everywhere, removed roof motor cover and tightened everything.
It is worse when the weather is hot and seems to stop when I physically squeeze the opening part of the roof the fixed glass frame of the rear section together.
It stops when the roof is tilted do it must be to do with the join area which I have cleaned thouroughly, lubed etc.
Unfortunately its impossible to generate the noise whilst the car is stationary and my Mrs wont help as she just ignores it.
I am on holiday for a week in this creaking Audi which we have owned for 6 years, 3 of which with a creak!
It will only take 1 drop of oil to cure it, but where to put the oil is a mystery.
I’ll take another close look at the rubber joining seals.

With the front glass in the tilted position, I found some witness rubbing marks at the rear corners so I have applied Olive oil to the area as that is the only oil we took on holiday.
If that doesn't work, My plan for the week is to shut some paper in the join and move it around to try and pinpoint the creak.

I was thinking about selling my non panroof SQ5 2018 model and spoke to a few Audi dealers. They told me my car is less desirable (a.k.a harder to sell) and made low offers on my car as it doesn't have the pan roof.

After reading comments here about pan roof rattles I'm glad mine doesn't have one!

Try something a little more substantial like MolyKote 55 O-ring grease

For sure our SQ5 creaked on 'used' non-Audi purchase and Stafford Audi needed 2-goes to sort, which they did: I now just apply a spear of MolyKote 55 O-ring grease onto the intermediate/front closing window seal to its rear fixed-window seal on a regular basis, like once/twice a year and ZERO issues... Sorted another local SQ5 in exactly the same manner, no worries. Give it a go, for sure you'll need something more substantial than olive oil...

Right. I’m on the case now. I have suffered this creak for too long so during this week away in Scotland in the Audi I do hope I can find its source. I normally travel around in one of my three jags which I fully maintain myself so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a creek in an Audi sunroof, should it? Despite adding cooking oil to the “witness mark” and closing the roof with newspaper all around the join, IT STILL CREAKS!

I have removed the rear grab handles as I thought that it could be the roof panel creaking behind them, but it still creaks without them even with a wedge between the roof panel and the roof metalwork.

Now what can I do?

It creaks with the roof tilted, but not when it is fully open. Operating cables? Mechanism?

By chance, there was. Very shiny Q5 with a panoramic sunroof and painted callipers outside the pub I went to for dinner. Obviously owned by an enthusiast who luckily turned up. His roof creaks too despite Audi main dealer trying to stop it.

Audi MUST be aware of this problem and have a bulletin about the fix somewhere.
