Hi guys, I'm after advice for a pal who Im introducing into the Audi family please.
He has a budget of apx14k and has decided on a petrol A3 sportback s line. He wants as we all do power with economy.
Being a 2.0tfsi owner myself naturally I'm pointing him this way but used ones seem to be so rare all I'm really getting is 1.8tfsi's when I'm searching.
My question is how good or bad is the 1.8tfsi please? as I have been told to avoid by the engineer who built my engine and he really knows his stuff about everything Audi, so why would he say to avoid the 1.8tfsi?
I've also read bad things in the past about this variant.
Cheers again guys appreciative as allways.

1.8 in an 8v ? I didn’t even know they did them

I have just bought another 8v and wanted a petrol and all that come up on the trader was 1.4 and 2.0

I wouldn’t rule the 1.4 out by the way. Peach of an engine.

So I am confused. Do you mean the 8p ?

I'm not sure mate I just presumed anything after 2012 was 8v and prior was 8p excuse my ignorance if I'm wrong, obviously I'm not as clued up as many of you guys on here are but I'm referring to the 1.8tfsi's around the 2014 mark.
I did rule out the 1.4tfsi as my pal was after a bit more poke especially as he does a bit of motorway driving. But I have read some good things about it.
Thanks for your advice mate much appreciated

Sorry. Totally forgot the 8v was 2012 to 16 in the PFL

I went from a 2012 8p to a 17 plate 8v and missed out the PFL

Don’t rule out a 1.4 Tfsi COD. Plenty fast enough and a peach of an engine

Yeh I've been reading nothing but good stuff about the 1.4tfsi CoD. And great value also, he can allways map it if he wants a bit more grunt.
What do you mean when you keep saying "the PFL" though mate?

I have tdi 2.0 and am happy..
Don't think there is huge difference btw 1.8 and 2.0 petrol
If you tune it it will drink same as 2.0..

Hi thanks but my pals not interested in diesel.
I've heard there was issues related to the 1.8 but not with the 2.0 hence the questions. Thanks mate

I've had a 1.8TFSI quattro DSG since I bought it new in 2014 and it's honestly the best car I've ever owned. I remain convinced that it is real-world quicker than the Civic Type-R that it replaced.

PFL. Pre face lift.

The FL cars occurred in 2017 and hence a revised model on 66 plate onwards. Basically different headlights, bumpers and virtual cockpit available etc.

Why not ask him - at least you’ll get a precise answer if he is building engines.

I could and will buddy but was hoping to get a few more opinions also.
Many thanks for your reply
I’d be interested to hear. Many years ago, Ford brought out an 1800 cvh engine for the Sierras - it was a flop and didn’t last long. The stroke was too long putting too much pressure on the thrust side of the cylinder at the top, so much so that the bores would be worn oval! With the head off, you could rock the pistons side to side and actually see the top piston ring between the piston and cylinder wall. I wonder if that is the same problem with the 1.8 TFSI?

Bore 82.5mm & stroke 84.1mm. I am not aware of a systemic issue with the 1.8T.

The 1.8T is EA888 Gen 3 so same design family as the 2.0 S3 engine, and has the same innovations eg balancing shafts, direct and indirect fuel injection (8 fuel injectors) which limit carbon build up & emissions as well as optimise performance, ValveLift, integrated exhaust manifold for faster warm up and cooler exhaust gasses hitting the turbo, and use a timing chain. Sadly it does share the thermostat/ water pump which is a weak point. The 1.8 is tuned for 95 RON as opposed to the S3 which is tuned for 98 RON and can advance timing accordingly.

If S-Tronic and front wheel drive, the DQ200 got a bad rep due to factory fill with synthetic oil but that was sorted April 2013. Apart from some clutch packs wearing prematurely, it seemed ok since - but that’s gearbox, not engine and the 1.4 COD used that gearbox too.

I was reading that the gen 2 had some issues and it referred to an indirect injection system and the integrated exhaust manifold but it did also say this was on gen 2 only?
I shall ask my engineer friend and see why he advised against as it's puzzling me.
Thanks for your time and reply mate it really helps

He was mentioning a certain engine being made with rings to hard and not sealing properly but I can't recall what motor that was lol. thanks for this input buddy

I had the 1.8 in a 3yr old Leon and it was a peach, had the car a couple of years and never had any issues. Good mpg, it was a strong engine with decent torque and lovely top end, 0-60 was in the 7 second mark, never used any oil either. I can’t recall if it was timing belt or timing chain but in my opinion a cracking engine. I still see that car on the road and it was a 63reg.

Good mpg, decent torque and it has a timing chain not a belt.
