Placed an order the other day for the Q5 Sportback 45 TFSI S line, expected delivery of end of June. Mythos black, pan roof, Black nappa diamond stitched leather, 20” wheels and flat bottom steering wheel. PXing my RS3, offered 31k but WBAC and another independent offered me 33k. More than likely won’t be PXing come June if RS3 prices stay strong.

especially a stage 1 RS3 lol. The good lady is collecting her new A1 black edition in May, she will be PXing her Q3 Black edition. With a wee girl now joining the family, the RS is bit too small and not really a “family car” in my opinion. So the wife downsizing means I have to upsize!

The Q5 is coming in at £51,500 (before discount) with an SQ5 at £62k, just too much cash sadly. Few mods plans; de chromed, remap and maybe some MSS springs should make the move away from that corker of an engine a wee bit easier...maybe lol

ordered via Stirling Audi, via a family friend so got a pretty good deal I think. Wasn’t quite as good as the discount via Drive the Deal, but was close enough. I also don’t have to travel day down to Say England to collect. Paying just over 47k for the above spec.

I'm going to sound like a stuck record here but have you look at the RSQ3? Comes in three flavours Std, Sport Edition and Vorsprung.

They all come loaded with kit - I have a Std 2020 model and that has all the toys (even electric seats as standard) you'd want in a driver's car whilst still being uber-practical and of course an EA855 EVO up front in 400PS form (or 420bhp on 99 octane fuel).

The Press media reports were mixed though owners, universally, like them - its a car with real character and an absolute hoot to drive. There are deals to be had around your budget - the only absolute 'must-have' option is the Comfort and Sound Pack.

I fear the 4 pot TFSI engine will feel strained/raucous and deeply unrewarding and you'll regret the decision as soon as the novelty has worn off. Please don't hate me for this.....

Oh, very nice! Do prefer the wheels on the Vorsprung so I may be looking at changing the 20s in due course, really fancied 21s but sadly not an option.

Having not seen a Q5 SB in person, I am slightly worried I may not like it. However with the right spec I’m sure it will look a treat. Having had a black car before, which I did nothing but moan about with the scratches visible in direct sunlight, I swore never to get another! However...black looks so good when clean. Toyed with the idea of Daytona.

I've enquired about an RSQ3 sportback at Crewe Audi and waiting on numbers coming back. Fingers crossed there’s a deal to be done. Have a certain budget in mind so we’ll see how we go.

Well if you are having a little one its the boot that is most important (plus enough space for the bulkiest of new born car seats) - and whilst a SUV is great for height and lifting car seats in and out, the longer boot of the estate works better for fitting in travel systems and shopping....

My daughter managed with a GLC but the boot on my RS4 is much better suited to the occasional time I have to put their stuff in it.

Sportback might look pretty but if you plan on holidays in UK, weekends away / visiting family then unless you are dropping half the back seat you might want more space to stand cases, travel cots, changing bags, bags of toys, bags of nappies, mobiles, night lights, bottle sterilisers etc etc.... God knows how in my day we managed with a 2 door BMW saloon!

The boot on the MK1 Q5 isn't anywhere near as big as it looks, my brother in law's B7 estate has more useable space than the SQ5. Don't know if the newer models are roomier but the sportback boot looks quite small?

Hmmmmm, all this chats making me question my order lol. Doesn’t need to be the biggest car out there, as long as it can take a baby seat, pram and the golf clubs I’m all good ha. An estate would have been an option but there’s nothing that takes my fancy, or if it does, the costs are outrageous. I was looking at other manufactures due to cheaper rates, Audi and the 6.2 is pretty steep. I was even considering the F pace.

One of the members there, Jaylees, had an Jaguar F-Pace, rejected it, and went for a Q3 Vorsprung. There are plenty of active users to seek an opinion from over child seats. The Q3's boot space has a shaped inner boot liner, most likely conceived for golf club bags.

We chaps want so much from a car, has to be practical, ideally not too big, if you have kids then ideally at a comfortable height for strapping car seats into....and if you happen to have had a 5 Pot RS in your motoring history than everything becomes a distant 2nd.

If decide to pay the above forum a visit then I can send you the tech brief on the latest RS engine - amazing piece of technology.

On the finance front - Audi finance is expensive. There are alternative funding methods and much lower rates. I'll let the Audi dealer throw discounts at the deal on the basis that I'll take it on a PCP and then settle the finance within 30 days.

Audi Finance is easy - the Business Manager is all over you in the showroom, wants to be your new best mate when the reality is that they are working to keep as much profit as possible for the dealership. Fair enough - but its your hard earned money at the end of the day.

He now has an M340i which is better shaped. FPace is a great boot - they had one of them at one stage. Poor quality and engine choice though but the facelift is better on both fronts apparently.

My Mum used to have an Evoque and it was plagued with rattles and the engine was almost a relic, property dirty loud diesel of old.

Would love to stick with the 2.5, so if I could make an RSQ3 work then I will. However, as you’ve said, hard to please us gents when it comes to motors. I need to compromise to a certain degree.

Dont get the Velar myself, way too expensive and too close to RRS.

I had an SQ5 (petrol) a couple of cars ago and really liked it. Shame they went diesel for the latest versions. Hence the RS4 as the way to get a fast petrol in the shape I wanted.... (not that I drive it fast very often so refined and capable cruiser just as important)

Width - at the narrowest point 1050mm

The interior of the Q5 is about 25mm wider - or 12mm more elbow room each side...than the RSQ3

I'm a simple man, never bought a two door for more than a 4 door (had a couple of 3 door hatches that were cheaper than 5 door equiv and had a 2 door BMW in days when a 2 door was a saloon not a coupe - E30 for those that know) as practicality wins over looks when money is involved... so sportsback wouldnt be for me - but I walk the dog past one most nights and its def better looking....

A foot shorter? I've heard of creative-accounting isleaiw but a good ol' imperial foot is 304.8mm!

So the differences are:

Q5 to RSQ3 = 17mm = .66", less than 3/4"

RSQ3 to RS4 = 85mm = 3.34"

RS4 to Q5 = 68mm = 2.67"

The RS4 is the narrowest of them all...

There is a critical measurement that's not given in the Audi material and that's boot depth - boot floor to the roof edge of the hatch aperture.

The RS4 and a normal RSQ3 will do OK - though both have higher boot floors than normal models because the battery is located at the rear however the SportBack versions also have a lower roof line - in the Q3's case the vehicle is physically lighter too.

3" can mean the world.... it is the difference between fitting or not!

But I think we can agree all have decent boots - especially as it will be pushchair not carrycot these days.

Do all the cars get the slide and tilt rear seat option? In my SQ5 making the rear seat back slightly more upright means somethings fit much better. Can also slide the seat forward a bit too to liberate more room without sacrificing a seat, all be it for someone with short legs!

Kinda jealous my RS3 will be going to having doubts so been looking at alternative motors, such as the X3 M40? Bit of a beast by all accounts. Epic deal on the X3M Comp, 699 a month and 699 deposit. Happily throw 5k or so to get this to 600 a month, issue is fuel economy, reviews say 19mpg is standard!!!! X3 M40i could be a shout....

I had an M5 before the RS4. M BMWs are in my experience a lot more "raw racer" for the road than the RS Audis..... the M5 would down change for a junction and be in the meat of the powerband ready for me to race off, even when I was only pottering and in comfort mode... whereas my RS4 feels much like my SQ5 when I am in potter mode.

Great cars, but you should drive one before you buy and make sure it suits you. X3M very stiff and so low speed ride can be a bit crashy I am told.

@NevMan had an X3 M40i so would be well placed to advise, and my son in law has an M340iT which has a very practical boot and drives brilliantly. And not far off being as quick as my RS4, certainly at legal speeds its as quick.

RS6 sounds nice - too big and expensive for me, I found my M5 was too big on country roads really. And had a bit of a drink problem.....!

I've made life complicated for you FBF01 haven't I? The Q5 Sportback in the 2.0 TFSI form will be fine, will get you from AtoB in style. The bit you will inevitably miss is the RS 5 cylinder engine, the effortless performance, being quicker than 99.9% of everything on the road around you and of course the spine tingling howl when the RS is unleashed.

The 2.0 TFSI produces 265 bhp between 5250 and 6500 rpm and 370NM of torque between 1600 and 4500 rpm
The 2.5 TFSI produced 400 bhp between 5850 and 7000 rpm and 480Nm of torque between 1950 and 5850 rpm

1950 RPM is about 75 mph in the 7th gear in an RSQ3.

Both the RSQ3 and the Q5 Sportback weigh about the same but one has more 135bhp and, crucially, another 110NM of torque, that's the bit that provides the effortless grunt, any time any place.

yes you have very much thrown a spanner in the works lol. I do make decisions incredibly quickly and was maybe a bit impulsive with the Q5 order. Now I’m not saying I’ll cancel but I am unsure if it ticks as many boxes as it needs to in order to be a long termer. I’ve asked my salesman (family friend) to see what he can offer, if anything, on the SQ5 SB and the RSQ3. Emailed TRL also to see why he can do on a X3 40i, I’ll then be able to make a decision once those quotes come in.

I have messaged John Clark as well as Eastern Western re the BM and will see what comes back. As you say TRL ain’t the be all and end all, but quite keen to see what he offers. I do like the idea of the X3 M40i, stage 1 map will give me all that I need alongside the noise that it offers.

I’d rather be in an RS or M model but we’ll see what happens.
