I have been running my 2017 since brand new as a company car, but I have recently took the allowance and phyiscally bought the car myself.

Got 36K on it and it has been flawless in the near 4 years of driving it.

However I have been bit before with Audi reliability and ended up with a 2009 oil drinker which is well known.

Question is do any of you 1.4 TFSI COD owners know of any problems with these engines long term or are they bulletproof if maintained. i.e. they dont suffer with oil pump hex key wear, oil burning piston rings, throwing a rod etc. You know, all the usual achillies heels which Audi tend to throw at us ?

I started mine up today and on tick over just does not seem as smooth and silent as it used to be which fills me with dread. Just wondering if any other owners have spotted issues at higher mileages etc.

No real issues or themes reported - it seems a pretty robust, reliable engine and more so if maintained well and not thrashed. I’d be curious how the COD mechanism holds up at 100k miles for those people who stay on variable / 20k oil changes, but that’s an issue with the oil change interval and not the engine design itself.

There will always be a case here and there, such as on the A1 forum at the moment but that is post cam belt change.

Just please do not tune it, your turbocharger will respectfully disagree :worried:

Good to know JohnM100

Mines been on the long life service so just had its second one at 36k but it will be every year from now on.

I am actually thinking of buying the same car for the Mrs and don’t want two identical cars with common faults which bankrupts me. Suppose it can only be a good thing that I can’t find many issues reported on them on the web.

10p a mile on company business so it gets driven with feathered feet. 58mpg this morning!

No plans to mod it. Past that stage of my life and just need something reliable, drives well, looks good and doesn’t cost a bomb to keep.

What are A1 owners saying about the timing belt?

Seen a few etrons with same EA211 for sale with over 100k. 100k to me is low mileage though.....

Yeah not many reports with issues with them so I think I they are all good. There usually plenty of noise on the forums is they are a crap engine. I think Audi did a good one for once.

I think it’s a peach of an engine and hits the sweet spot between power and economy. It’s like driving the old 1.8T AUM in the Mkiv golf GTI but you can get 50MPG if careful rather than 30 ish in the old golfs.

I've been on a german car forum recently and was advised that the germans change the belt at 210,000km. They say they have no issues with the engine. I contacted Audi Germany to clarify what is their stance on the timing belt change interval considering it supposed to last the 'life of the engine'. I got redirected as expected to Audi UK who said in their email to ignore the Audi AG documentation and is a 5 year replacement

Well maybe I have been unlucky but it hasnt cost me anything due to having extended warranty.

Mines a 2016 1.4 COD.

So far I have had a new turbo becuase the COD mode was making a loud ticking noise and recently had a huge fuel leak which was one of the injector seals had failed, all covered and repaired under warranty. I am yet to do a full write up on here about it.

Although my engine is still silky smooth and as quiet as a mouse.

Whats the mileage on yours?

I had a waste gate actuator fault stored but cleared the code off but looked the issue up and seemed a common issue with the greasing of the pin?

Funny as for the 12 months Im sure I could smell fuel now and again. Since the seals have been replaced I cannot smell a thing so maybe it was failing over time. Anyway it caused all sorts of issues when it failed. Huge huge fuel leak. Still huge patch on my drive. Really dangerous.

I'll keep an eye out for that issue. I'm going to be changing the oil every 4500 miles instead of 9k. I've yet to have a mechanical failure in any car that I've owned and been lucky I guess. Was chatting to an uber driver a few years ago about his Honda hybrid and said he'd have the oil changed every 5k so I guess he'd be doing that every other month and said he never had any issues with his cars.

Having owned a 1.8T AUM for >100k miles as well as a 1.4 COD 150 bhp in the household I agree wholeheartedly

Fingers crossed the engine will last 150k+ enough time for me to save for a W206 Merc when they have depreciated

There are no absolute guarantees but if it’s a keeper and aiming for that sort of mileage/age, keep away from variable service and go for more frequent 9k / 1 year oil & filter changes.

That’s what I am doing. Oil change every 12 months regardless of how many miles I have done. Usually average 10-12k a year except for last year. I have less than 4 and nearly all of that came before March.

Loved my golfs. MK4 were built like tanks but it was the suspension which give up ghost on every single one of mine. I had 3 of em before a mkv which drove great but was disappointed with the interior if I am honest.

My merc w204 that I had for 8 years (didn't want to part with it and still had for a year after the audi purchase) and put on 160k in that time. Serviced myself on was still on original turbo etc. Only replaced wear and tear like tyres, brakes and service items. Did replace drop links just before I sold it.

I gave the Merc a hammering as was great to drive but the Audi I have never pushed it and always trying to get the MPG high
