superkarls overhaul

Wouldn't it set the turbo off to the wrong side?

Stock placement is more toward PAx side. This looks like it's more toward drivers

My current manifold places the turbo right over cylinder 2.
Pagparts is pretty much bang in the middle.
The issue is that it's made for drivers side inlet. Whereas I'd like to keep the inlet passenger side, so the compressor housing would need to clear the transfer box.
Bill has done it on a fwd Ibiza, but I can't find anyone to have done it on a quattro.

Yeh I remember him having to grind a bit.
Thing is my little gtx28 has a small cover.
I'm also wondering if the new Garrett v band housings have a different overall height compared to The tial ones, might be a few mm in it.

I was going to ask couldn't you just spin the turbo 180 degrees to have the exhaust on the "correct" side

Just looks like the compressor outlet would need some custom bends to get it joining where the stock charge pipe is

Thanks for the pic @badger5 more food for thought!

Compact gt3071... So how is this? Different housings???

Well I drilled and tapped it for M10 as I was aware of the problems with using M8. They're 12.9 grade high tensile studs as well.
The problem you have then is one of space as the T25 housings are designed for M8 and so you don't have much space to work with in getting any sort of spanner on the nuts, hence the slim K-nuts.
It's also impossible to have bolts on the other side of the housing to my picture, shape of the housing simply won't let a nut of any length greater than jardos clitoris go in.
I'm going to try without a washer tonight, and also order some nordlocks should that fail.

hey @superkarl did you drill only the 4 mani to hot side holes? or do you also do the 5 on the DP flange?

I see my thread has also fallen victim to the photobucket massacre.
I wont be fixing it.

Its been a year since my gearbox shat itself. And a year since i physically touched the car.
During that time i started a Phd, have a ~110 mile daily commute, got engaged, and have had 2 other dailies in the form of a mighty 90hp 1.5dci Clio, and a ferocious 110hp 1.5dci Captur (Fwarrrrr).

I really don't know where i stand with the car and I'm considering parting it out. Priorities shift, as do interests, and currently I'm enjoying living and seeing the world as opposed to sinking ££££ into this car again, and with a wedding looming, the funds would be helpful.

On the flip side, I'm not sure i can bring myself to do it, knowing the joy i get when i do drive it. Which is why I'm also considering dry storing it for some time in the future.

Ahhhhh cars eh.

Also, my fiances car is for sale:

I'm a great believer that there is a seesaw balance in life between intelligence and commonsense, one makes up for the other  so now you're smart enough to be on the trail of a PhD you can be comfortable with the fact that your commonsense will have dropped enough to make it right to keep your S3

Great thread thanks for your efforts posting Shame photobucket being a bunch of winkers have removed all your early pics grrr.

I had forgotten what happened to this.

is it just a case of finding the time and a new gearbox Karl?

Don't give up on it mate. You'll miss it when it's gone!

Engine, turbo kit, Ecu etc have all been sold.

Sometimes I sit in the engine bay and make cool noises tho

Oh what!?

Have I missed something or have you kept quiet about it mate?

I thought it had a wonderfully enjoyable 380bhp from a gtx 28 and just needed a gearbox!

Sad face.

Sad face.

It did, and I loved it... when it was working.
Don’t have the time or money to do what I want with it and I’d lost the love. Advertised the car for parts and sold most things engine related fairly quickly.

Still got loads to get rid of but I’ve been swamped with work so not removed a lot of it and haven’t pushed for sales.

The engine has gone to a guy down south who wants to put it in a phase 2 clio sport hahaha

Plus this:
Life starts with 6?

I don’t have a name yet. We’ve not bonded.

1997 A3 1.8T. 150 AGU. 151k miles.
I know this car extremely well. Owned by my dads neighbour from new, I’d asked to buy it a few times in the past.
Unfortunately he died 3 years ago. Another neighbour bought it and has had it stored for 3 years. I needed a cheap run around as we only have one car (2018 Renault Clio 1.2 tce), and myself and the Mrs have started jobs out of the city.

I spent today fitting ball joints and top mounts to help it through its MOT, as these have been advisory’s most recently

The car is completely standard, with the exception of an aftermarket cat back with twin exit tail pipes.

I plan on fitting the front end of the S3 to it at some point (rack, arms, hubs, coilovers) but I need to source an S3 front arb. Knew I shouldn’t have sold everything! Then I suspect I will feel I have half an S back, albeit with asthma.
I will need to source some rear lowering springs so I can lower it. I’d also like to source some 312mm front calliper carriers as an upgrade, as the current discs are fairly worn.
I’ve also got the facelift rear lights off my S, and the interior if no one wants to buy it.

I don’t plan on this being a project at all. It will spend most of its time parked up at the office as I use work vehicles most of the time.

No Garrett turbos here.

Yes Karl! What are your plans for the A3? Are we expecting great things like your last build

Nothing great sadly. I will do fairly typical OEM upgrades as and when things need doing.
Just nice and nostalgic to be in an 8L again.

Well it’s great to have you back with us. I enjoyed your last build mate. Who knows what will happen if you get the bug either way.... it’ll be good to see your progress with the A3.

Thank you.
It’s been nice lurking in the shadows watching new builds like yourselves progress.
I have no doubt I will be back with a serious 8L project in the future, just not right now.

Don’t think I got anything left from my 8L, if I do come across something in the shed you can have it, if it’s of any use of course
