How to setup wireless apple carplay

The availability (or not) of wireless CarPlay is a territory thing.

Sadly one territory that is wired only is UK. It’s been that way for a couple of years and a very annoying omission.

Are you in the UK and when did you take delivery?

Mine also works wirelessly and I picked my car in December 2020. But i believe the very first time you connect it , has to be wired

Thanks Tony, my video was actually filmed on a UK car as Audi told me the same thing :)

Was your car built October onward and does it have the same software and version as shown in the video? - collectively we think they changed some hardware/software to allow later cars to connect wirelessly.

I spoke with the dealer today and wireless Apple CarPlay is now standard on factory build S3. Not sure from when but did say eats the phone battery.

i would imagine it does - I specced the wireless charging pad anyway although not for that reason

BMW had an exclusive deal with Apple for wireless CarPlay but that is no longer the case so it can be available for other manufacturers and territories, depending on the contract Audi have with Apple.

My knowledge of the wireless Apple CarPlay availability is based on my A7 2019 UK which was wired only even though Audi US produced a lovely video showing how to connect wirelessly. This was an early car with the new touchscreen MMI and self drive capabilities. Car went in for 4 safety recalls to update the software in the first 6 months and two overlapped wireless becoming available. The never gained wireless still as that was not the specification at build. It falls under the ‘specification subject to change without notice ......’. Licensing was the reason it wasn’t available at launch and the reason it never got activated (yes it’s software only) is no agreement (VW/Apple) at the time.

Due to this I don’t bother using CarPlay at all as the car has wireless charging as standard so just drop phone on charging pad and use MMI with Amazon Unlimited.

I’ve been having a rough time with Audi on my A3 which is now being rejected to due to an inherent fault with the MMI, but I have been querying CarPlay wireless and traffic sign recognition missing from the build.

I’ve been told various bits of “advice” that ranges from bizarre to useful but frustrating.

One dealer sales manager told me that wireless CarPlay doesn’t work in the UK as our military use that frequency here. But couldn’t explain why other A3 owners and other models in the range have it?!

The most sensible feedback I have had was that from build week 39 in 2020 the wireless carplay function will be available. Mine was week 30, and there was “no option to update the software build”.

On traffic sign recognition, most think this will come as an option in functions on demand.

Traffic Sign will definitely be functions on demand as my standard spec says prep for Dynamic Traffic Sign display (FOD) - Out of order because all cars have the camera fitted for Lane Assist and Pre-Sense and therefore you no longer get the speed limits displayed on the sat nav map because that only applies to cars without the camera based system which is basically none of the range - I've complained to Audi as I didn't spec the Driver Assistance pack at £1750 and am waiting to see if they will agree to add the Traffic Sign when available having spent a lot of money on my car.

This ties up with what my dealer told me when I ordered my car in October last year. He said that Wireless CarPlay was not a feature of the car and he was not able to state when it would be. So I bought the car assuming that I would not get it. (I wasn’t particularly bothered: the way I look at it is that I’m paying a lot of money for the MMI interface, so that’s what I’ll use unless I need a function from CarPlay that’s not available in MMI.)

Lol when VW / Seat offer it in their new models.
More Audi bull.

yeah the X build date was what I was told too, along with builds are subject to change at their own notice.

The saving grace they obviously have this time was it was not promised anywhere to be wireless, unlike those missing electric seats :)

This is what frustrates me. I was weighing up the new SEAT Leon or the new A3 before purchasing, the Leon has Wireless CarPlay standard across the range, the A3 didn't yet is the "premium brand" of the group. The Leon also has 3 zone climate control with digital temperature control for the rear passengers as well as 2x USB ports in the rear for rear passengers, neither of which are available on any trim level on the premium vehicle.

My S3 has wireless CarPlay and I set it up when I got the car a few weeks back. I’ve since deleted the connection and now use the cars onboard MMI, which I prefer.

That's interesting bud, I'm not an apple user myself - but out of interest how comes you prefer the mmi?

Was your carplay glitchy?

Nope, car play worked perfectly ok, I just just prefer the MMI interface.

I bought a second hand 2017 A3 earlier this year and I've been trying to work out how to set up Apple CarPlay with absolutely no luck.

Looking through the forum, it seems it's only an option on newer builds of Audi - is this still true? I have no USB port built into the vehicle, just via the cigarette lighter. The car connects fine to the Bluetooth for the Audi MMI, but I would prefer to use Waze than the built in navigation system as well as being able to use Spotify from the MMI rather than on the phone.

Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

You have an 8v model not 8Y - You should have USB's in the Armrest - Lift it up and they're at the front - Cable your phone and carplay should come up

First sign that I'm not a "car person" is the 8v vs 8Y model - I'm still clueless.
Second sign is that I've had the car since May and had no idea I had USB ports in the armrest.

That worked for the wired CarPlay - thank you so so so so much.

I assume wireless CarPlay is not an option for my model?

Cheers again.

8V is the model you have that was replaced by 8Y March 2020 which has the touchscreen

Wireless Carplay is available on the latest model - The first releases didn't have it but around October 2020 it started to appear - I have an S3 November 2020 and that has wireless Apple Carplay

Glad you got it working

Have a look on Ali Express there are some dongles that’ll allow you connect wirelessly , Amazon also have some.

Mine was working wirelessly until recently when it refused to connect. I think something happened in the Audi App with the WiFi connection. I registered for a free trial with Cubic Telecom and it resolved things
