A6 Avant 45 TFSI feedback request

Hi, new to the group.

I've an A6 Avant 45 TFSI (265) Quattro Black Edition on the order.

There's not much online about this specific engine. Reviews seem to focus on entry level diesels and top spec 3-litre versions.

Does anyone in the group have one? How do you find it day to day, around town, on the motorway, mpg etc?

I'm moving up from a Skoda Superb Sportline 220 hatchback (petrol), so expecting more poke, better grip (FWD to Quattro) and although less rear space and litres in the boot a better loading area for stowing luggage away.

I'd appreciate any general thoughts and feedback.

Also, regarding a specific query...

Does anyone know the situation with the adaptive dampers options on the A6 Avant?

I read across the range the options are:

- Standard suspension on Sport
- Sports suspension on S-Line and BE
- Air suspension on top spec petrol and diesels

Also, those without air suspension as standard adapted dampers are an option.

It's too late now as the car is ordered, but after trawling through the configuration options I can't see adaptive dampers anywhere.

Maybe it's discontinued on the 2020 model in an effort to push buyers up the range, maybe it's included in 'sports suspension' but I doubt that or maybe I've missed something
 
At launch the A6 was available with adaptive suspension as an option but I suspect that was dropped when the rationalised the options to deal with the WLTP regulations and introduced the Vorsprung spec, which gets air as standard. I suspect there are very few cars in the UK with that option and even fewer with the 45TFSi engine, so you may struggle to find anyone who has it.

On a seperate note I see that Audi seems to have dropped all of the 3.0 diesel engines from the UK A6 configurator. Don't know if this an error on their part or a deliberate change of policy
 
OP, did you not take out any car with this engine for a test drive before signing on the dotted line? Otherwise it could be an expensive mistake should you decide you don’t like the engine after it arrives.

On your earlier point it makes sense that they've quietly decided to discontinue the adaptive dampers, as it's not an option on the Skoda Superb configurator either.

Regarding the test drive of this engine, no I haven't, but in the A6 is an uprated version of my current 2-litre petrol engine in my Superb, which was equivalent to the Golf GTI at the time. As I'm sure you know the same unit is used across all VW Group manufacturers. That aside I got an amazing deal, didn't want a diesel and have always wanted an A6, so I'm happy with my choice - mine looks like the Daytona Grey version of yours (lovely car BTW!).

Don't forget to post pics when you get it, I fancy an Avant in Daytona Grey as my next A6.
 
Hello from Singapore, Tom. I'm driving the C8 45TFSI. This car certainly feels more powerful compared to my previous 2 litre C7 which was detuned to 190hp for the Sg market. You need to keep an eye on the speedo,otherwise you'll end up clocking 3 digit speeds before you realise it.

Hi, thanks for your message and advice.

I've a Skoda Superb Sportline with the 220ps version of this engine, which is pacey enough, so looking forward to the extra 45ps. They've discontinued my engine in favour of the 190 on the Superb too. Looks like they want some daylight between the options.

The specific reviews I had seen on the 45 TFSI were in Australia, so clearly there's more of a market there in the APAC and ANZ regions.

I’ve had my 45 TFSI S Line for a year now. The pace off the line is amazing for a 2.0 litre and was a big step up for me from my A4 190 S Line.

Day to day driving it is really comfortable but i would say that fuel consumption is on the poor side. Town driving is not great for fuel economy but on a long motorway journey it will return reasonable figures. Over my 13K it has returned an average of 34mpg which isn’t great but I understood fuel economy wouldn’t be great when I bought it.

If you get it out and onto an open road put the gearbox in S its great fun and has more than enough power in reserve to make overtaking pretty painless.

As the previous poster said it is very easy to get carried away with, it would easily sit @ 100mph and you not even notice.

Thanks for your reply - really helpful.

34mpg is alright. I've the same engine in a similar sized, less powerful Skoda Superb and I don't quite get that. I didn't buy it for the mpg so I'd be quite happy with that.

The one thing I'm less sure of is why it's quite so quick. The bhp and torque are less than most hot hatches but the 0-60 time is in the same region.

Out of interest, what tyres came on yours? I think they come with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or 4 Ss, which since I put on the front of my current car has made a big difference over the Bridgestones that came on it.

Also, are you on sport suspension? How do you find it? Adaptive wasn't an option and I assume with Quattro and lower springs it'll grip and ride well.

Really looking forward to getting it. I'll get probably end up living in it!

Yes it has to be in Dynamic and S mode to get near to the S3 which was pretty capable in any mode, but it’s pretty rapid none the less.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I know the Skoda Superb is spacious. I've test driven in that car before but the only thing that put me off from it was the big overhang from the back and only the L&K trim had the 3 zone climate control as standard. Other than that it is a nice car.

I like the estate and priced it up, but the monthly cost was more than the Audi, with £10k difference in list price.

Both 2 litre petrol. The audi has about 10 bhp less and the Skoda had different standard kit, but did include adaptive cruise (like my current car). To get adaptive on the Audi it was part of the tour pack and an extra £2k, so I forfeited it.

Not personally interested in tri-zone - the kids will have to make do!

In terms of space my Superb hatch is 620 litres I think and the Avant is 565, but the floor area on the Avant is about an extra 4cm in each direction and has a longer roof life, so not sure of the maths on that.

Ah that's nice. Well hopefully once I've finished with my future A4 in which I'll be getting soon if the A6 is still in its current form then I may get it afterwards as I quite like the interior and design.

Yeah, it was due for 1st March. Only issue is my current car goes back on 26th February, so I'm having to borrow a pool car from work. Can't wait!

Ooooh that's harsh. At least it will be worth the wait.
 
Car now due 10th February - forward about 7 weeks. But, will look for 1st March delivery, as current car goes back at the end of February and wanting fresh reg.

As a side note, didn't realise the wheels are the same design as the last generation RS6 - tidy! :rapture:

Almost close now. You must be happy to hear this after waiting patiently for your new car. Hopefully you get the '21 plate'

Not sure Audi UK's rationalisation of options was anything to do with WLTP. Head over to Audi.de you will be able to configure the hell out any model! You choose from 11 (yes, 11!) different alloy wheel options compare with the paltry 4 on the UK configurator. This so called rationalisation of options is really turning me off becoming a repeat Audi owner! I can no longer de-select sports/s-line suspension for standard/comfort suspension or upgrade to adaptive. I can no longer have a flat bottomed steering wheel when selecting the Tour Pack (adaptive cruse etc). Go for a Black Edition and you get no choice in alloys (its a take it or leave it), same goes with type of LED lights (i.e. you cannot change from Matrix to HD Matrix) and so the list goes on! We now have to chose from Sport, S-Line or Vorsprung and choose a colour!

I'm reluctantly beginning to look elsewhere.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it and it's worth the wait. I'll hopefully be getting the saloon version in a few years (if it's socially acceptable to and the government doesn't move the goalposts :whistle2::shrug:)
