I'm getting 16396 no eml light on, car starts and drives good it also idles as it should, code comes back after about 50 miles of driving. Can anyone help, thanks

I'll have to get it pressure tested, do you know what reading I should be getting when I run the test. How can I check the vvt unit? Thanks for the reply tuffty

Off hand I don't recall the pressure figures... two common issues with the 1.8t engine, oil pump pick up pipe gets clogged over time so dropping the sump and replacing it is a common job (pretty cheap so generally not worth 'cleaning')

The other is the cam tensioner wearing out (VVT unit in this case)... this can fail even on engines with decent oil pressure... only solution for that is to replace the unit

Thanks for the reply, is there any way to Check vvt on vag com

You can check it's position (don't recall the blocks off hand) but the fact its throwing the code experience of this on several engines suggests the VVT unit is faulty... be aware that VVT on the 1.8t is on or off... so there is a resting position and an 'active' position... the fault code normally pops up if the ECU detects the cam position hasn't changed in the allotted time frame its expecting or simply not reached the position its expecting (both are typically due to oil pressure)...

As the unit wears then it will allow more oil to pass through rather than build enough pressure in the VVT to move it...

If you haven't changed the pickup or know its been changed then its not a bad thing to do as a safer than sorry thing... oil pumps are generally solid on the 1.8t so its less likely to be that... the cam follower bores wear over time and can drop overall oil pressure in the head but generally that results in obvious wear on the followers as they wobble about...

I would get the pressure checked first... a quick google provided this..
