Hi all,

Since I've owned my S1 it has had a whining noise that sounds like it is coming from the engine. The pitch and volume increase as you accelerate, it does it in all gears and if you slip it into neutral it does the same when revving. It's a very subtle wizzing noise, however recently I have noticed that if I stop accelerating around 3k rpm, the turbo makes a bit of a puffing noise (not the typical induction noises etc) when it falls past 3k rpm.

I'm just wondering if either of these noises are normal? Cheers

Sounds like the bearings on the turbo. Is it under warranty?

Unfortunately not, it's a 2015, and I bought it privately. I'm guessing it would require a turbo rebuild, which is never cheap?

I have a rattle on my wastegate and it's a 2015. Not sure how much a rebuild is, would be cheaper then a new one tho. Have you taken it to a mechanic?

Yeah, my wastegate does the rattle that sounds like a wire brush being pulled across the ground, but it only does it once a month. Audi told me it was just something I'd have to live with because the wastegate rod actuator clip "fix" doesn't work on the S1 apparently. It's going into a VAG specialist in a month or so to get some new Contis, an issue where it can't hold a smooth idle when the AC is off and the AC makes a clicking noise after Audi flushed it, but ironically the AC smells worse than before. So I'll see what they say. I am hoping its something to do with the ancillariy belt to be honest.
Thanks

Are you sure you take contis? I have them now. Never again! What are those tyres loud. Michelin pilot sport or Pirelli p-zeros are nu next....

I had the Contact 5s on a previous car of mine and I liked them a lot. I've not tried the Pirellis or Michelins, but I probably will eventually. The Bridgestone Potenzas that are on the car at the moment are awful, they slide far too much

Mine had Bridgestone's on it when I bought it that I replaced with Michelin's, and in my opinion they transformed the car, better feedback and grip in all the conditions I have encountered. I've not tried Continentals so can't comment on those

I get a squeaking noise on mine which goes away when the AC is switched on, stealers said it was nothing to worry about and " it's the noise made by the turbo venting it's pressure" whilst it was under warranty and TBH it hasn't got any worse but is a bit annoying. I suspect it's the clutch pulley bearing on the AC compressor ??

I have Sportcontact 6 on mine from the factory. Great tyres. They don't last though but I've had earlier versions on other cars. Had SC 2's on a VXR in 2006, got 7000 miles out of the fronts lol so I know what to expect.

Good to hear! I'll probably be grabbing some winter wheels at some point, so I won't feel so bad wasting nice summer tyres in the winter

I had a similar issue previously along with a ticking noise when the AC would just on Auto mode. Was quoted £1400 to have the recirculation flap changed under the dash. I decided I'd leave it as I'm cautious that by them taking the dash out the car will be filled with even more rattles.
They told me the whining from the car is either from one of my diffs or the throwout bearing (I doubt it would be the latter since it does it in and out of gear etc). Unfortunately the noise doesn't disappear with the AC on for me
