Hi guys

It’s that time of year soon to renew the insurance, I’ve never gone with an insurer that offers the telematic box and wondered how long you have to have these fitted so they can gather the data and what’s your experience with these, drive like Miss Daisy whilst fitted to keep the premium low?

How strict are they and have the been known to increase the premium higher depending on the data?

Think I’d rather pay a bit more and not bother but willing to consider it.

Hopefully AIB will come good on a decent renewal quote but my experience is insurers always hike it up even though you’re a year older and the car has depreciated!

Thanks for any experiences.

My son had one of these - ending up paying more through quarterly bills for excessive acceleration and hard cornering. Also monitor time in rush hours and speed - I wouldn't bother.

I take it you have an RS3 and your considering having an insurance black box fitted, have I read that right lol?
They stay on for a year and monitor your driving the whole time.
Totally removes the point of having an RS3 if you ask me!
My son used to have one and it came to a point where it was actually cheaper without

Lol, maybe it was a dumb question but not knowing much about these boxes I was seriously questioning the validity of considering, however given the replies I’ll be swerving them completely and happy to pay that bit more without big brother watching and telling me my driving is cr*p and I owe more premium!

Cheers guys and have a happy new year.

Well your solution is clear Riko........sell the RS3 and get a 3 cylinder Polo complete with insurance saving/may as well give up driving black box

Lol, no I’ll keep the RS3 and wipe from my memory any thoughts of the black box! :icon thumright:

It was a genuine query though, if you only had the box on for say a month and just drove sensibly for that time then great, however I can see the box is a permanent fixture so no obviously it’s not going to work with the RS3 which defeats the object of having such a great performance car.

My son is now about to take lessons, bracing myself for the ludicrous insurance premiums on a 3 cylinder Polo (and the like!), but from comments above maybe the box isn’t best for young drivers either!!!

Cheers.

I dislike them on principle and won't even get one for my son when he passes his test!

My daughters insurance is with direct line and it’s a black box policy.
Their box just plugs in to the obd port and that’s it.
On the app it gives a score for every journey,
Not that she’s had any problems with speed etc but I did look in to the rules.
Basically anything more than 20 mph over the speed limit and they have the right to cancel the insurance.
Which 50 in a 30 I agree although I think most have easily done 90 on the motorway.
I think they’re great for young drivers especially when I think back to what I got up to.
The thought of using one on my policy is definitely a no no.

how much was your insurance last year? I mean must be pretty punchy due to entertaining the idea of a box. Like others have said, a box totally negates the point in owning an RS3. In no way shape or form will I ever have one fitted, too much big bro style for my liking.

My insurance premium went up £90 but managed to haggle down to £40 in the end. Still, £550 for an RS3 suits me just fine.

My son could not get any quotes without a box on when he passed at 18, just the way it is.
He's 22 now and is in his second year without a box on. I prefered it when he had one tbh as he uses the throttle like an on off switch.
When he passed we had an 07 Mini Cooper S going spare and the cheapest quote was over £10k.
His first car was a vauxhall corsa, albeit a diesel SRI and that was £2300!

My sons friend had his cancelled by more than for repeatedly speeding in a 20 zone, he argued that the box was wrong but it cut no ice!
Very difficult to come back from that at that age!

The box saves approx 30% of the cost on her car.
She’s only 17 so I’m actually pleased her policy has a box.
How things have changed since we were younger.

I agree, you do feel a little safer when they are out there in the big wide world with an insurance box on

No not at all, £640 last year I think with stage 1 declared, I did a quick quote on the usual insurance quote tools and coming in around £700 this year although my insurance isn’t due for 2 months so will re-quote nearer the time. The black box companies were quoting £600 so based on the feedback above I’d rather suck up the £100 and not entertain the box, seems ludicrous I agree for a high performance car.

Just wanted feedback as mentioned as never really looked into them before.

A stage 2 RS3 you only have to sneeze with your foot on the throttle and you’re doing twice the speed limit!

This has got to be a joke?
I guess it sounds like it now!! Lol

Was a serious query having no idea how they worked and to try work the system to save a few quid from the insurers that a more than happy to take our money! If it was a matter of only installing the box for a short period to gauge your driving then great but seems it’s a permanent fixture and clearly not doable as clearly defeats the object of having the RS!

Exactly. Bit like drug dealer kindly letting the police know where they are every day.

I've worked on this stuff; their algorithms determine my typical drive to the shops as an 'aggressive driving' event.

In terms of data - the device I worked with quite advanced with an accelerometer and GPS. At the back end there's clever software and analytics. It could serve up all your journeys complete with G-force data, speed traced onto google maps. Plots your heavy brake and corner zones etc. These guys aren't messing around. They know exactly how you're driving, all the time, and if the device gets removed before a journey it'll almost certainly be detected and flagged... have an accident and they'll be all over the data, if it's even reported then expect a call...

I think if any RS3 owner on here had one of these, their insurance would be cancelled within a week ha ha!

People are saying they wouldn't have one due to "big brother".

I suppose you've forgotten about that tracking device about the size of a packet of cigarettes that you tend to carry around everywhere?

That can easily be destroyed and removed as evidence!

I mean there's a difference between generic data collection for personalisation of advertising and targetted, purposeful data collection from an actual "black box" whose data is used directly to apply cost or penalty to you.

Don't be reductionist, it contributes nothing.

What the absolute f*** is wrong with UK's insurance system? Honest question..

You guys need to declare mods (even minor things like intakes and tunes)
Young drivers nowadays need to have this ridiculous big brother blackbox to get insurance??? Guess I would've been driving without insurance
The premiums are ridiculous
They deny your insurance claim if they nitpick and find the most minuscule thing wrong or you misled/forgot to tell them something

In contrary here in Aus I've forged my engine and gone big turbo and overall spent over 20k aud on mods and just made my "agreed value" of the car 20k more than it would be if it was stock and they don't even ask what I've done (for all they care if could be a 20k sound system). They just add a small cost to your yearly premium to cover the chance you write the car off and have a total loss or someone steals it and it isn't recovered.

Even with the premium my brother who just turned 20 has financed himself a 370z nismo and its 1400 per year (800 pounds)

It's a nightmare here! I have declared all my modifications but it really restricts how many insurers you have access too. It's a nightmare in the UK. :(
