Normally I'd pay a garage to do the service on my car but money is tight so I'd rather save a few quid and do it myself, but I'm struggling to find a definite answer for what oil I'm supposed to be using Haynes manual says 5w40, europarts recommends 5w40 and 5w30, having a look at previous posts etc it seems both are recommended, car is 1.9tdi 140k miles bxe engine code.

OMG you know nothing , your recommendation wasn't even a PD oil !

Viscosity does not dictate protection it's oil quality / film strength , basically first and foremost oil basestock groups and additive package .

Might as use 20W50....

As stated above, go with the spec of oil.
With my old pd130 golf asz engine I used quantum platinum pd oil which is 5w 40 505 01 spec. but not longlife. (Changed yearly/8-10k miles)
In my similar engine A4 (avf) I've always used the longlife 3 which is 5w 30 507 00 spec, also changed yearly.

You'll be fine with either as long as you stick with the spec 507 00 or the 505 01 but for the money you may as well go 507 00.
