automatic boot opening

How can they claim the Automatic struts dont need to be coded and they will just open your boot by your fob.
This is very misleading, I cannot see how they would open your boot if you dont have Auto open already, but they make no mention of this.

Am I missing something, can I have auto open boot without any coding or anything?

Very interested

You have to have the boot unlock option on your fob. They’re just spring assisted struts that will pop the lid up, but take more effort to close of course.

Basically they have a spring mounted on the strut which on opening provides enough pressure to pass the first 25% of travel meaning no need to lift by hand. If on your fob on the middle you have boot opening then you can press this and boot will open fully assisted by spring loaded gas struts

The spring assist auto opener is standard on Saloons, which pops open the boot open all the way from your fob.

If only it would close it as well, ultimate decadence.

I'm sold, for 65.00 it's a no brainer.
So many times got my hands full from tesco and have to put my bags on the wet British soggy ground. Happy days and they get good reviews and a 10min fit. What's not to like eh!

@CanadaA3wales I’ve only just heard about this this evening. Seems like a nice cheap upgrade! Just ordered some. Use code: STAYHOME for 10% discount.

Not trying to be a bit negative but won’t these things put unnecessary stress on the mounting points that wasn’t designed for it? On a normal manual opening the stress is on the outside of the mounting point and these springs will reverse the stress as instead of a pull it’s become a push.
I’ve been looking for something like this or a more electric option as I miss the full electric boot I used to have in my a6 but don’t want a flex on body panel or boot lid. Sport back boot lid is pretty heavy compared saloon.

Hmm....not sure to be honest. I didn’t look to see how the new ones are mounted. There doesn’t seem to be any issues as there is lots of positive feedback, but then they could be a fairly new product so long term effects might not yet be known.

think that’s my worry is the long term. Probably fine and I’m over thinking it as most people probably open their boot once or twice a week so will be years till something is to go wrong.
I did wonder how easy it will be to modify the electric struts from something like an a4/6 estate as they have pretty heavy boot lid like the sport backs then hopefully able to code it so it all works like a factory fit. Think I need to get some time and money together to give that a try.

I think people will have changed cars before weaknesses may become apparent..but I don't think for a second that Audi engineers hadn’t already thought of this idea / especially as the Saloon has a spring loaded one so there are reasons why it didn’t make an options list.

..could just be cost cutting though..

Can’t really compare the saloon and hatchbacks. The style of hinge/mechanism is different to the hatch and you couldn’t fit the saloon style hinge/mechanism into a hatch. Weight of the boot and the pressure points is in different places.

Could be loads of things why there’s no springs loaded hatch’s :
Cost cutting
Hatch back mounting points isn’t strong enough and will cost too much to add additional braces/welds. The saloon is bolted across the length of the boot lid not just a hinge at the top like the hatch which could cause flex etc
Probably the main one is people who generally buy hatchbacks don’t give a monkeys about a spring loaded boot.

Im not really comparing the two, just using it as a reference that the idea has already been thought of by Audi, so there are probably reasons why it didn't happen.

As you say, the hatch points may not be strong enough etc There are definitely reasons why it didn't happen, but as you also say, could also be that they felt the market wasn't there for such an item/facility.

On my a6 saloon it was around £400 option for electric remote opening/closing boot lid. I would pay that all day long on any car. It is a bit poor Audi doesn’t offer it for the smaller cars and doesn’t come standard even on the bigger cars.
Boot lid from an a4 estate is very similar size/design. I will need to see if I can get my hands on a pair of electric struts from a4 and see if it fits. Mates works in a scrap yard so will tell him to look out for one.

I think I seen on their website somewhere that they will cover any damage caused by the use of their product.
You could always video the install points when you install to show they are solid and in working order, then if they break or loosen then I would personally take action for them to repair any damage.
I know they are a new product, but so far on instagram or the internet, not 1 person has complained about damage.

I am personally going to buy them on Friday when I get paid, its been a long time coming to have something like this at this price point.

You would be looking at possibly £1000.00 for new parts, fitment and coding if you were to go full automatic open and close (Aftermarket OEM)

But most people only want their boot to open as they have their hands full from shopping or whatever, they dont really need it to close by itself, but it would be nice if it was standard like most American newer cars.

Sorry pal, but the suppliers of theses struts explicitly exclude and damage caused. They only guarantee the struts themselves.

Could be that with the size of the hatch it could literally belt someone in the face if its opened remotely? There may be some NCAP stuff that prevents it being in the design from fob operation?

I think its worth the punt myself , I doubt their insurances holds up as their TC's no doubt means you have to have it installed by God himself to claim on warranty if needed (jk), but its definitely a nice addition. I love popping my open when about to the shopping in.

Well there ya go :) Do at your own risk.

Well just make sure you are closing the lid right in the center and dont put stress on the corners.
Even if a point breaks, I cannot imagine it would be super expensive to fix as its only a ball joint.

Either way I am going to buy it so if you want to hold off until I fit it next weekend then I can let you know how it goes and if there may be any potential issues.

I am sure they are aware of the extra stress and have taken this into account.

The company has been selling them for 2 years and I cannot see any complaint so far.

My neighbour did this a few days after getting his a3 saloon. His boot does spring open pretty quickly though.

It's not the ball joint that breaks on the strut it's the hinge on the roof lining that distorts if too severe and too much bounce. There was a lot of conversation about this some years ago. I think the consensus then was that if powered it is controlled but if sprung it bounces and opens with some force. Let us know how you get on as it will be interesting to see if newer ones are any better.

Just waiting for mine to arrive but if you watch any videos either on their website of facebook page the opening seems to be very controlled especially at the highest point of opening when it would be most likely to cause stress I would imagine

I have a similar product on my Sportback I purchased via a well known auction site using this seller QuickLift and have a write-up I in my S3 diary click me. My struts are still fully automatically opening the boot even with the low temps we have at present.

Here's what happens on a long press of the boot release.

Looks like exaclty the same as emerald but your came from poland.
How are you getting on with them since september, any signs of undue stress?
@ST200

Just went out to check
so if you press it quick to unlock you still have to press the boot button by the window, but if you long press it actually releases the whole boot.

Correct, long press to fully open & allow the auto opening struts to do their magic movements.

PS My stress levels are fine, thanks for asking....as are the strut mounting pins.

struts arrived yesterday and just fitted them , took all of ten minutes . bit more effort required to make sure it latches properly when closing but apart from that delighted with them

Going to jump on the band wagon. Going to order a set. Like the no effort opening. Be £65 well spent i think.

Well they certainly weren’t easy to fit. ****** nightmare on one side in particular!

They are VERY stiff when closing the boot and it never closes and locks first time so you need to do it a second time!

@ScottishA4B9 you'll get the nack as I pull down using interior handle then fingers on reg plate & a firm push does it. Takes a few tries but honestly you just require a bit more push force than OE struts & you're done.
