I want a cheap and cheerful VCDS cable for occasional use to use on my older Audi cars (2009 A3 and 2007 TTR).

Not looking to spend more than about £100.

Loads available online but not sure how to identify genuine one from the fakes so thought here would be the safest place to buy.!

Genuine ones tend to go for around £250 unless it’s the 3 vin with only one or 2 vin space left to use, bear in mind when you buy a 2nd hand one and if you and want technical support from vcds themselves you which I’d recommend if your new to vcds ( they have a forum to help with all fault finding and retrofit help) but you need to pay $100Dollars to transfer ownership to you if you buy 2nd hand, before you can get that help, so if you can stretch to a new one it makes more sense so it’s registered in your name and you can get the support with it ,

Why do you specifically want VCDS?

Why not OBDeleven or carista?
Seems that loads of people use VCDS as a market leader, which also seems well supported; however, for me it's overly expensive if you just need it to sort out gremlins on done rogue car.

I could quite easily get by with a 3-VIN lead with just one VIN left. I might have to try a Facebook Marketplace one, there are loads on there for the around the £75 mark.

There’s a load of fakes vcds about especially on Facebook, which will have limited use, will read fault codes but won’t allow you to change coding
Make sure you know what the genuine looks like and maybe ask for the serial number to check it’s genuine

I have used both VCDS and OBDeleven. Both borrowed from people.

I decided to buy OBDeleven as it is far easier to use and the basic coding procedure is the same. It runs from my phone and lives in my car. I don’t need a laptop and can change things is seconds.

It’s your decision, but you can get a brand new OBDeleven and a PRO account for under £100. I used to be in the same boat as you (VCDS only) but it’s worth considering others.

The 'Pro' says in development. Do you not get the ability to change as much as you can on VCDS with the OBDeleven? Seems rather cheap if it's on par with the VCDS..

Thanks OliNix, that's some useful food for thought; I'll do some online investigation to get consensus and to see whether it'll do what I need it to do.

I haven’t found anything yet that I can’t change with OBDeleven that I could with VCDS.

I have used it on both Android and iOS. Android has some features which aren’t yet available on iOS as OBDeleven has only just become available on iOS. As a result some features on iOS are marked as “in development”. However, I have not found a scenario where any of them are needed.

Charts and Gauges: Only useful if you are displaying them on an android head unit, otherwise useless.

Coding II: haven’t found a reason to use it in 10 years, even with VCDS.

Trouble Code Freeze Frame: Could never get it to work on Android anyway!

If you have something in mind that you need to do, I’m more than happy to test it to see if it will do it.

My phone is Apple and I have an iPad but could buy a cheap Android tablet if the ODB Eleven runs better on it. To be honest, I just want to read, diagnose and clear faults on my car; turn off the service lights; and be able to code replacement modules (I'm having a particular problem with my CCM and central locking right now). In essence, I just need something considerably more capable that my crappy V-Gate handheld ODB II scannner.

It’s more than capable of all of this!

I used to have an old android phone, but swapped to the “next-gen” OBDeleven so I could run it on my iPhone. It’s much easier

A VCDS cable for under £100 ?? good luck as you got no chance unless its a clone.

What about simple adaptive coding, for example horn chirp on locking, that kind of simple stuff you can do on VCDS. Able to on the OBDelven?

Can you read fuel pressures with the new OBDelven or injectors . Cheers
