I’m looking for some information on my soot level and regen status for my DPF. I was wondering if anyone uses an OBD dongle for diagnostics/Customisations on their car? I know Android’s VAG DPF app is supposed to be brilliant but I can’t find a similar one for iOS. I have a Carista dongle but it doesn’t show me any information regarding my DPF.
Any recommendations from the App Store or any snap on’s that people use?
Cheers guys.

I've just been exploring the options on my recently acquired OBD Eleven and there are tons of DPF options there, including current actual or calculated loading, kms since last regen, number of failed regens etc.

What section is that info available on OBDeleven? I’ve just switched from android to IOS and haven’t connected to my car yet but I can’t remember seen that info on the android app.

Found it on the OBD Eleven app:-

select Control unit: 01 Engine
Then select live data
Then from the very long list select

Particulate filter, est. blocking the reg. field
Particle filter, req. of the reg. field
Particle filter, kilometers from the last reg.
Particulate filter, oil ash mass
Particle filter, calculated soot mass
Particle filter, measured soot mass
Particle filter, time since the last regeneration

Be warned...it is a huge list to scroll through! Calculated soot mass was giving a figure about 50% higher than actual soot mass figure given for me. My calculated was about 11.5g, my actual was about 7.8g.

What should the ideal soot level be?

Ideally zero! In reality, unless you're driving 70 miles a day like my mate, you will be accumulating soot to burn off either passively on a long journey or actively onshore ones. Will take my loading readings today (currently doing 2 10 mile trips a day, with one 62 mile round trip a week). Tomorrow I'll be doing 110 miles to Leeds and back to Newcastle to pick up our new Chocolate Labrador puppy. I'll do before and after readings.

I believe (not 100% sure) that the DPF will force active regens on you when loading gets to 20g.

We picked up our Labrador pup today, 97 miles each way, mainly averaging 75mph on the motorway.

So I did a bit of OBD Eleven scanning before and after the journey.

Particulate filter oil ash mass:-
Before = 5.9504226g
After = 6.0259730g

As my current mileage is 21498 miles (after the journey) and the ash load limit for the particulate filter is 80g,

My filter should have have 80g of ash in it at about 153k miles if we don't assume that oil consumption/ash generation was much worse during running in (which it probably was).

Particle filter messured (and calculated) soot mass:-
Before = 13.50g (20.42g)
After = 7.01g (11.47g)

I'm a little disappointed that only 45% of the soot (plus whatever was generated on the journey).

I'd expect we'd had about 160 miles of DPF hot miles on the journey (as we only stopped for 20 mins when we got to we got there, so car was still hot for coming home.

Perhaps running in 7th gear for most of the journey doesn't put the engine under much stress to generate the heat required for efficient DPF operation?

Mpg was 51.2mpg there and 57.6mpg back with aircon on both ways.

Exactly what I was after, thanks! Got an OBD11 in order now. Hope the pup didn’t go to the toilet in the car mate!

Went for a drive yesterday. About 25/30 mins on the M4, but it’s 50mph (pain in the @$$) temp limit, so I put it in 4 gear and left it. Revs were at about 2.4k and temp was showing 105°c. Hopefully it had regen as I normally only do a 11 mile drive to work. Will check will obd11 and post the results.
Sorry guys I’ve got an A7 3.0tdi. Didn’t realise this post was an a4 thread. But hopefully obd11 will be the same in regards to finding my readings

Dog was as good as gold on wife's lap all the way back. She licked a few aluminium trim bits but that was it!

A few typos in my post that I'm unable to correct - I was on 11498 miles on my return, not 21498. I had hoped a long drive like that would fully clear the DPF.

Forgot to mention. Download and install the OBD Eleven app on you phone now, don't wait for the dongle to arrive. You can start accumulating daily free credits as soon as you install the app (11 free on first day and 6 a day thereafter by watching 5 short ads a day).

Did you buy a pro license for long coding etc? It's cheaper to buy it on its own via download from the official site. - about £21.

My daily commute is only 7 miles but 5 miles of that is on a motorway. I do it in 4th at 60 mph (2200 revs)

Downloaded the app yesterday and it is showing 13 credits. Haven’t upgraded to pro yet, do you need that for DPF stats? I’ve emailed Carista as well asking when they will have DPF functions available. They had loads of functions available for my 2012 A3 but think they are still catching up with 2016 onwards.

Can't remember whether you can or can't view live data within the modules (for DPF fill stats, among other things), as I knew I would want pro for long coding and it was set up when my fongle arrived.

Just make sure you log on to the app every day for your 1 free credit, then watch 5 adverts for your other 5 - a total of 6 free credits a day.

So I’ve received my dongle and upgraded to pro. I can’t seem to find the live dpf data anywhere. I know iOS doesn’t have some of the functions that android does. Are you using OBDELEVEN on an iPhone?

I'm on Android. I connect to the car and then scrolling through the controllers, you go to control unit 01 - Engine. Within there you have the option for "Live Data" and within the there's a huge list of items to select including all the DPF stuff.

Does your IOS layout not show that when connected to your car?

So finally got round to checking the soot levels. Here’s the results.
My car is an A7 3.0tdi 272 on about 54k miles. I’m pretty sure the last regen time is not correct, as 49037 second is about 13hrs. And I only drove for 5mins yesterday. But now as I am writing this, I am assuming the this time would 13hrs of driving time and not just time in general.

Obdeleven pro is not needed to check dpf soot levels

You have some odd units in your readings - Particle filter since last generation measured in yards? Not sure if I have oil ash volume, I do have oil ash mass.

Yes the units are very odd. Wasn’t sure how to change them, but now I’m thinking maybe have to hit the 3 dots on the left to change the units. Will try that. U can select as many things as you want, to show up on the screen. I’ll have a look for oil ash mass too.
